It's come to my attention that the stock GD roof weighs somewhere in the neighborhood of 45 pounds, and that the AMS Carbon roof is a pinch over 10 pounds. We all know that pulling 35 pounds off the top of the vehicle would have a profound effect on handling, and I was under the impression that it would be worth my $850 to do this eventually.
The problem is this (from the SCCA):
Roof panels must be metal of at least the same thickness as original. Sunroof panels may be replaced with sheet metal of at least the same thickness as an original roof skin without sunroof. Inner roof structure may only be modified with addition of a full roll cage built to SCCA Improved Touring specifications or better.

Does anybody know of an Aluminum replacement?

At the point that this plan comes to fruition, it'll be used for TSD, Stage, and RallyX. Yes, a full cage would be installed by then.

I'm not so much looking for specific products, more thoughts on the feasibility and effectiveness of such a thing.

The roof does not weigh 45 lbs unless you have a sunroof. If you have a sunroof, pull it all out and put a patch panel in or pull the entire skin off and replace with a non-sunroof skin.

yea I've had the roof off my GD and I've had a brand new GD roof... it was definitely lighter than 45lbs. I think I threw out my old one so I can't weigh it

Ah ha!! The 45# figure was from AMS (trying to sell their carbon roof), so I'm sure they weighed one with a sunroof against their carbon piece.

I was working with the impression that the stock solid roof weighed 45#, which IMO is just unreasonable to put on the top of a car.

just get a stock "L" roof if you have a subroof, it is not a hard swap, just be sure to get some of the extra bracing from the non sunroof models. hardest part is getting the glass in and out.

if you decide to go the carbon route wait to install when the roll cage is made- it makes welding the top much easier!
