ok, so i have been working on exausts for years! ask vaderSTI, haha i think i had 12 fif configurations on the s10 i had! ahah, so one day i made one....
its cheap, very lightweight, and awesome sounding!
ok i lost my old pictures so i will decribe it as best as possible!
1.get a 24" exaust tube with a 3" inner diameter.
2.get a 1/4" or 3/8" drillbit
3. it is good to have a drill press availible..if not then at least a vice.
4.drill holes in an evenly fashion(2" apart).. like displaced, make sure to drill from one wall directly thru the other wall. make sure to keep any holes at least 4 inches from either end.
5.once you have all the holes drilled(1/4" or 3/8") buy those size bolts and make sure the threads are at least 1/2" to 3/4" below the wall of the pipe, and above the pipe no less that the heighth og a nut,
6. thread nuts on each bolt on the outside only.
7. at this point you should have a pipe with a bunch of bolts going thru it all over.
8. now tighten the nuts till it starts caving in the walls of the tube. cave them in only 1/4" for a louder sound and more for a quieter sound.. i did 1/2" cave in and my 2.2L 4 banger sounded like a small v8! just a crazy sound.
9, now fit to your exaust and u saved about half or more the weight and gave it that sporty sound all the HKS guys have!
i recomend this to those peeps who are a little broke but wanna sound like the big guys! and see it doesnt have to be 24" it can be how ever long the hole is..
well thanks for looking and hope this is a money/weight saving trick for one of u guys!

That, def. NEEDS pics ... So, cornfused ... what do you do with that, when you are done ? You take the bolts out ? ... right ?

This is sooooooo ghetto... the ghetto-king cant even imagine it! :muhaha:
I believe he is restricting flow by crunching the pipe.... Thus making it have some muffling properties....
Edit: Also by leaving the bolts in you are making the pipe itself less prone to resonating.... why it makes a deeper sound....

so let me get this stright its just bolts in the exhaust that disrupt the flow so it actually performs worse??

Well.. a 3inch pipe is just over kill for ANY 2.2 liter motor, So I am sure he may have helped the performance...

oh i didnt even notice he was using a 3in pipe thats even worse lol 3in is way to big for a 2.2L or even a 2.5L u actually lose exhaust velocity which kills performance but hey its not like my car makes much power anyway lol so a nice sound never hurts

seems it would be only for noise. adding turbulence to the exhaust (be it the ripples in the piping or the nuts/bolts sticking up through) isn't going to do much in the way of helping performance.

pics would be awesome.
i can picture this in my head but still. it probably sounds sweet, but like the other guys were saying, it might have been better to do 2.25 with your engine

ok..yes..you keep the bolts in... because you are caving in the walls of the 3" pipe it comes out to be like 2.25" or 2.5" then with the bolts in there it creates the back pressure you need to keep the performance.
and blackparris is correct.. um hmm i was gone..ill look around my pics to find it otherwise ima draw it out lol

back pressure is restriction. you do not need back pressure to maintain performance. you need exhaust flow velocity.
too small a diameter piping and your exhaust will flow well down low (netting you gobs of torque) but will have bad top end. too large a diameter piping and you will lose low end (due to turbulence caused by not enough flow and the cooling of the exhaust gases) but will have nice gains up top. ;)

+1 For some pics.
So your not running a muffler? or cat?
Before I did the wrx swap i had a 2.2L w/ Borla Header, Stromung high-flo cat, and Borla cat-back (awesome sound) decided to have some fun take the cat-back off and make a 2.5" straight pipe.
Performance was horrible, sound was not good.

thank you strat... it's good to see people fighting the good fight against the "i need back pressure" myth. for years i've tried to explain to people that back pressure was never good but they just look at me like i'm the crazy person.

I need to see pics of this. As a fellow S-10 guy I just cant form a good opinion about it.
