It is required in some Asian countries.

Meh, it's okay. They've been progressively watering down the Forester for a while now, I suppose you'd expect them to pull something yawntastic like this.
As for the mirrors.. JDM throwback?

It could be alot worse. Its just Subaru trying to appeal to a wider market. I'm not saying I like it, but Subaru is out to make money. Maybe if they make a Sport version of this Forester, perhaps it will look batter.
BTW: i also think it looks like a ford. Particularly, the Edge. Its even the same color :(

As long as it is still a boxxer(preferably turbo) with all wheel drive and that blessed Subaru ability to handle any type of road/weather then I could care less what it looks like. If it happens to look like every other car on the road then that just means my smile will be that much wider when I'm driving past everybody else as they try to dig themselves out of the next big snow.

this happens everytime. once they make a car that is so sexy. so nice. they have to make 2 or three ugly models after it before they can orginate from the orginal lol. I bet subaru will make a sharper looking GC body style in the near future. just like ford and chevy r doing.

Flame suit on
Begin rant
They already did. The new 08 Impreza/WRX IMO has a strong resemblance to the GC/GF bodied cars. I know we all think of those as classics but when they first came out it was a very plain and boring looking car. That however was part of its appeal. A car that didn't really stand out in the looks department but yet it was a near equal for many high performance cars costing twice as much or more. It wasn't until the release of the 2.5RS that much of the US even began to take notice of Subaru as a performance car and that was largely due to the scoop and massive wing. I was one of the many who began to really take notice of Subaru after the RS first came out. We soon began to truly crave the WRX and its turbocharged fury. Subaru finally obliged for the 02 MY and almost overnight a nationwide phenomenon was born.
Subaru realized that they had already tapped the full potential of the initial craze for the WRX and that many of the first wave were looking for a more "adult" car. This was a big reason why the Legacy/Outback platform received the turbo treatment. "We" were starting to settle down but we still wanted the rush.
To me these new body styles of the Impreza/WRX/STi and the Forester is a good thing. They are a return of sorts to the "plain Jane" styling that Subaru had for most of their history. They are also an attempt to capitalize on the popularity of the WRX craze. Subaru is above all a company that is in the business of making money; the more people they can sell cars to the more money they make. A more successful Subaru means greater opportunity for specialty/niche oriented cars making it into production. Also more Subarus on the road mean a wider availability of parts and lower maintenance/modification costs for us enthusiasts.
And if you have to ask why they went with a hatch for the new STi, then I wonder where you priorities lie. Do you want a car that satisfies your "American" ego that it can't be sporty if it doesn't have a trunk or would you prefer a car that is the basis for one of the most dominating rally teams of all time. After all the WRX in general and the STi specifically are simply homologation specials. Their early popularity was mainly due to the fact that they were tearing the world rally scene a new one.
/End rant
Sorry just had to get that off my chest.
Re-commence bashing new Forester and WRX
