View Full Version : Constant exhaust leaks... how to fix without welding?

So i have a Vishnu 3" Turboback. Vishnu in their smartness developed the system in 3 parts (DP, midpipe, catback) and they all clamp together with these tube clamps.

They make aligning everything a piece of cake, but what i am noticing now is that i have exhaust leaks at both of the points where the clamps are used (DP>Midpipe and Midpipe > Catback).

What can i do to get a good seal between these sections to keep from having exhaust leaks. It sucks hearing that lame sputtering coming from underneath my car!

Grimm Speed gaskets will work

The Remflex ones? I need a 3" circular one then...

Is this stuff permanent, or is it soft enough that i can dismantle my 3 piece exhaust and then re-apply?

It's semi-permanent - goes on soft and hardens with exhaust heat.

Some high-class chat about it here:

Seems like for your situation it would work well. You could use the cheaper (and more readily available) Permatex stuff too, but it doesn't work quite as well in my experience. The pic in the first post links to where you can buy it, although I usually just drop by their place and pick stuff up.

ahh the exaust... i have been working on these since before i could drive.. you know what i would use? i nice thin high temp tape and then clamp over, or even i have used tin foil lol or redo what they have done.. and no welding... make two plates out of id say a stronger steal..in these plates make a centered hole that would fit around the pipe its self, then have 2 or 3 or 4 holes going around it, then put bolts in there and nuts and tighten then it wont let any exaust sneek out, so in general you are pusing the 2 pipes together. genericly... or same idea but further back on the pipe with 2 more pipe clamps so u can use the clamps it came with and with the pressure holding into each other..

i know i sounds complicated but isnt.. maybe i should draw it

Permatex Ultra Copper high temp silicone is the best product for exhaust system slip fits during installation. Its the most advanced sealer available and resistant to extreme temperatures up to 700 degrees. This product is a necessity to use if your installing our Holeshot slip-on or complete header system.

Reading about this stuff it says its rated up to 700F, isnt this going to be a problem with 1400+ exhaust temps? or is it much cooler by the time it reaches the bottom of the DP? I guess if guys are using this on headers (bolted right to the block!) then it can withstand temps further down the exhaust system

Thats what we use on the race trucks, even where the header comes out of the head. I also used that on my bros car...DP to muffler same as where you are talking about. Its pretty much do it yourself gasket. Do that for now...then get the Grimmspeed stuff and let me know how those work ;-) I would rather use an actual gasket...

Yes but you have to clean it up then re-apply.

The gasket would be somewhat difficult to get to line up with the dumb clamp things, but ill be giving that a try eventually. Ill have to put another order in to GrimmSpeed!

Ill check out the permatex stuff for now. I dont have any plans to change exhausts anytime soon, but you never know when smog time comes ill have to put the stocker TBE back on.
