Car: 1995 Impreza L 1.8L 150K+ miles
Problem: When steering the car the it seems like the power steering cuts in and out. It does it while driving fast and slow, doesn't matter. I just got done rebuilding a power steering pump thinking that it had something to do with it but it didn't change anything.
I want to say it has something to do with my ps rack. Any thoughts on the subject?
This is what its like when turning
N=Normal steering
H=Hard steering
Turning N-H-N-H Lock
Not sure if that makes sense but that is how it is. It cuts in and out.
Thanks for the help in advanced.

I have a 95 1.8 l awd as well I blew out my powersteering last week driving in the woods. It's def the rack. They are about 150$ at napa and quite easy to install. If you do it your self make sure you turn the steering to full lock back and forth after installing with the engine off to insure you get all air out . This is after you have added fluid. You may have to do this several time . Till all air is out. Good luck and feel free to email me with any questions. vettetech249@gmail.com
sounds like the channels in your rack are bad
think its time for a new rack buddy
its been four months since the first post, im sure youve already taken care of it..
just my 2 cents

I just started having the exact same problem today in my 98 Legacy wagon. Can anybody confirm that the power steering rack is in fact the problem. Never saw any follow up on this?

UPDATE!!!!! Hey guys well i have found a new issue with the steering on these cars the N-H-N-H-N i found that the Steering joints (aka rag jiont) the part that connects the steering to the rack was worn and was binding when turning. Now i found out a way to test if this is ur problem or if it is your rack.
Step 1. PB Blaster Or WD 40
Step 2. open the hood and look on the drivers side next to the washer bottle see the u joints there?
3. Now Spray the crude out of them with PB Blaster while someone turns the wheel from lock to lock.
4. now drive it around and see if its better.
Warning spraying a worn rag joint is not a fix for this problem it must be replaced!!!!!
its to bolts to change and as long as u lock the steering wheel before removal its a PRETTY EASY job.
Hope this helped guys.
