View Full Version : Gauging Interest: DI windshield banners / big decals
409industries
12-05-2007, 08:01 PM
I recently asked the guy that did the latest sticker run, how big of a sticker his machines will make. He said 28" by 120" (roughly 2.3 feet by 10 feet. This is more than big enough to make windshield banners.
It might be tricky to get the curvature to fit the top of the windshield, but id be willing to try to get it right if a few people wanted to purchase these. If there is some interest ill get a quote from the guy to see how much it would cost to make.
Like the Subaru one below, and the Rally America one below that, but maybe not quite as big...? The black/tint underneath would not be included.

Maybe getting some of these made that are just a generic size, but much bigger than the small side decals (this one was original one line, but i cut it because i was experimenting)

Not to deter business or anything. But thought I would let people know that you can buy the Rally-America windshield banner for $10 each plus $5 shipping. All you need to do is contact Bob Nielsen at Rally America and he'll get you one.
This is how it looks on my car. I love it.

The RA banners look good. I have the old school rally-america.com one.
I'd put the new RA banner in the rear windshield, and do the DI.com in the front.

I measured across both a GD and a GC windshield and rear window, so i would make them the right size so it can fit on the front or the rear at the top depending on your preference. (me personally, its going on the front!!!)
So it sounds like theres a decent amount of interest, so ill get the ball rolling on these. Sadly i don't expect them to be as cheap as the RA ones as mentioned before, but then again they say something better! :)

So i got my initial proof back from the sticker guy today. Its looking very good. I might order a small trial run to see how they come out... If theyre good then full scale production will go into effect. Cost will most likely be in the neighborhood of $25 shipped in the US.

It might be tricky to get the curvature to fit the top of the windshield, but id be willing to try to get it right if a few people wanted to purchase these.
just fyi, you don't have to worry about the curvature of the windshield when designing. You just make it wide enough (have the logo towards the bottom) and when you put it on, you're going to cut the top to fit the window curves. That way, the bottom edge is clean/flat, and the top looks custom.
Its a bit of a pita to get it to fit/look good, but with a little patience and an exacto knife, sharpie, masking tape and some sissors, its not too hard to make it come out professional looking.
quick 'how to' write up:
1) Clean your windshield GOOD
2) use masking tape to position banner where you want it. Top edge shouldn't be lower than your windshield moulding.
3) use sharpie to outline where the window curves under the banner.
4) remove banner, cut outline with sissors. Cut just OUTSIDE of your sharpie line.
5) get a clean sponge and a small bucket of slightly soapy water...wet the area where the banner will go. avoid soap bubbles.
6) remove backing on banner, put on windshield, you should be able to slide it around because ofthe soapy water...if any area sticks hard, pull it up and wet it down.
7) starting at one side, use the exacto to pull up the rubber around the windshield, slide your banner underneath....do this one small section at a time, all the way around the window. If you need to trim a section, do it in small pieces.<----this step is a pita, easier said than done, just have patience.
8) smooth out the banner as much as possible, use the sponge, a squeegie, whatever
9) wait about a60-90 minutes....pull off the 'top' layer of the banner slowly, especially around the edge. there will still be bubbles, so push them out, since its not 100% dried, if you need to pull up a section to get a bubble out, re-wet it and put it back.
you should get this:

Nice write up Jon...
Keep in mind though this isn't going to be a full banner with the black background. Rather its like a big diecut sticker. It can be applied to the front or the rear.

ohhhhhh, ok. got it. that's easier then...still use the soapy water though.
AND, the cool thing about that is, it doesn't even have to go on a winshied...across your hood.....side of your door....cut it in half and half on the front door, half on back door. lots more options with that.

Good exposure for DI. How rad would it be to compete at your next rallycross with like 5 other cars with window banners.

Alright kids, here we go. I got a few free minutes tonight so i "installed" the window banners. Its really humid and cold right now (its actually raining...perfectly shi*tty vinyl sticking weather) so i'm going to let them dry overnight before pulling the mask off.

Rear
http://www.dirtyimpreza.com/hosting/project_rs/2007-12-18-windshield_banner/windshield_prep1.jpg
I just eyballed both of them, so i hope theyre pretty straight / even. The rear was harder to line up because the rear window has more concave in it, but what is really nice is the defroster lines! They really help to make things even!
Ill post pics tomorrow after i peel them off. I think its going to look awesome.

Oh so much to do and buy, yet so little time and money to do it with. Assuming Christmas doesn't completely kick my wallet to the curb (yeah right) I might get my order in by the end of the year. In the all to likely event of that not happening I will have to wait until Uncle Sam is kind enough to send me back home.

I think it looks great but I was just wondering if it would be possible to make it contour to the windshield? (Is contour the right word?)
Anyways, like this: (this is for the rear window so I think the front would have even less of a curve)
http://ims.hspn.com/pic.php?u=246C584L&i=3891
I know a straight one has more flexibility of insatll locations. Just thought I'd ask to see if it was possible.:)

Naw, the contured ones aren't gonna happen. The artwork was submitted and i am happy with the result. If you want to contour it to your windshield you can always take the straight decal and experiment with cutting notches in the top of the mask to make it wrap. (This is a painstaking process i just didn't want to really deal with).
These are going to be $25 each. I am going to setup a pre-order thread to collect money to start the production run. Ill post the link up.
