Hey Everyone!

I was wondering what is the best post 2003 impreza platform to build a rally car on? The reason is because i want a cheap car, so i can take the additional money from the 06 and put it into the project car. I have a 06 wrx and i want to sell it for a older cheap subie to get ready for group n. Take it easy on me. haha

well, post 2003 and pre 2006 only leaves you with one option.....

04-05 suby! yeah baby.....04-05 bodystyle FTW! haha

if you can find an old 04wrx with a decent tranny, go for it. STI will be more expensive, but you're getting the 2.5L motor and the STI tranny. actually, yeah, go for the used 04 STI.

does group-n have engine size restrictions? I have no idea. good luck.

Are you planning on racing Rally America or NASA.

Rally America no longer offers a Group N class.

Plus group n is a weird class to build up unless you are building a 2.0L STI from europe.

P-GT sounds like a much better class to go for.

Well to tell you the truth im not sure if i want to do Group N. Im am willing to put serious time and effort into East Coast Rally, so what would you recommend? I have no prior experience in rally. All I know is that i have 20,000 bucks to build a car, huge ambitions, and vision. I also have to 2 guys that are very willing to give up there jobs to come help excel my dream. So I was thinking maybe a GC chassis, since its so cheap( around 2 thou)and light(-441). And since it will be caged. I don't clam any knowledge, this is why i need you guys!:)

What car would you recommend i do this build on?

Im sorry in my intial post i meant pre 2003. Since they are much cheaper and the resale value wont be killed.

For pre 2003 I would suggest any non turbo impreza. That way you can do the swap you want later.

Group N may not be the way to go. Even Open class could be a bad idea, as it is extremely competitive. Production GT would be your best bet. Also, competing at a Regional level would be a bit more friendly. $20,000 will buy you a pre-built rally car, which, for all intents and purposes, is the cheaper and easier way to go if you have no experience. That way, later on down the road you will know how to build a rally car like the back of your hand, and you will have gotten your feet wet in rally.
You could buy this open class car (http://www.dirtyimpreza.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2023)!!!! $21,000 :lol:

Also, check here for used rally cars (http://www.specialstage.com/classifieds/showcat.php?cat=13). There are quite a few in your price range.

Also, do you have a truck/van/trailer to tow your rally car with? This is a must. That is why I'd be afraid $20,000 might not cover a build, + tow rig + spare parts, tools, everything else. That $20,000 may be better spent getting a rally car already built, a cheap tow rig, trailer, and then put some more of that towards your first rally. Entry fee + gas + spare parts + hotel + food. You could probably expect to need to drop $2000-$3000 on a weekend of rally.

I already have a truck and trailer to tow the car. I have fold down beds in the trailer so thats covered also. I have tons of tools. Are there any special rally type tools i need to be aware of?
