I gonna have to steal some school bus ones ... I want ones that are wider then the car and reach the ground. ( on a stock car. )

If they are too close to the ground you will eventually back over them.
But yes, I second your desire for mass produced rallyarmor-type mudflaps with more coverage (I would like more further up the wheel arch).

Yup, ground flaps are just waiting to get ripped off.
I designed and made my own that cover MUCH more than the RI stuff but are at no risk for getting ripped off unless you try to back over a 8" tall log or something.

Too long = backing over them and ripping them off... unless you mount them far back on your rear bumper somehow?

^^^ like on trucks!
I backed over my long flaps. FCKED up my bumper. End of long flaps on my car.

i have a thick semi mudd flap cut to make both rear flaps on the back of my rs they are like 2" from the ground have no problems.
they drag from time to time and have a reverse affect as what you would think. after running on dirt or snow the back of my car is completely covered. cannt even tell the shape of the letters on my plate

If I were you I'd make a stencil out of paper or other various material of your choosing and tape it into your wheel well. Play with it to see if it does/does not touch a point in the tire which it can get dragged under. Keep in mind being in mud or other terrain in which your tires "sink in" a bit, will change this geometry and make it easier for them to catch under the tires.
When I worked for a Road Dept I had to truck in dirt with a 10 wheeler and dump it into a pile, well sometimes backing up to the pile would cause the flap to get stuck between the dirt and the tire, where it was promptly ripped off.
My remedy? Square Flaps. If they get ripped off, flip em and screw them on again!
I've yet to try this on a passenger car, but I suppose if you put it on right, it can't be too different?

Google-ed and youtube-ed ... all I found where dump trucks riping their flaps off. ( backing into a pile of sand ) ... so thats a 'go' for ones that reach the ground. ( ...on stock ride height. *hint* ) Since, I dont see anyone planing on crawling up sand pile in rev. ( def. wont work, with a wrx's stock diff's. )

Michelle (my wife and co-driver for road rally) has flaps that are 2" off the ground on her Impreza wagon. She's managed to back over them and rip them off. Twice. Once backing into a snow pile and once backing into one of those parking-concrete-log-thingies.

So ... is that a "defetive" part/design, -or- op. error ?

It's just proof that it can happen.
Even ground sweepers won't rip off backing up on flat pavement. Backing through deep snow, tall grass, sand, or other things, it becomes a possibility.

Ok, this is starting to look like the vortex tread, from 2004 where soccer moms started a class action against good year because their vw r32's with the 18" oz's aristos, kept getting "impact bubles" in the sidewall, when you run them at 15 psi, AND find all the pot holes, AND take speed bumps at 40 mph ... They thought, just because you can do that, with a camry with 15" steel wheels ...
Some also say, that its possible to drown in an inch of water ... that doesnt mean we cant have backyard swimming pools.
Serously. Just get these : http://www.themudflapjack.com/ for when you want to : rock crawl. parking turtles. in reverse.

The IKEA cutting boards I recently bought should definitely give way more cover than a RA flap, while letting you put it wherever you want.
WAGONLOVE did this and mounted them really high because he kept backing over his flaps :p

They mount lower on a GD (which they were designed for).
