You will have problems turbocharging Na subaru engines down the road. You would be better off selling your engine and buying a STI Engine/Tran and get a 2.5 brake swap or a wrx brake swap. Then get some nice suspension if you want to go fast. As for just upgrading the 1.8 to a 2.2 you will gain quite a bit of torque and some HP but it wont be the same as a turbo. You might want to use the search button for swaps. I'm sure some one on here has done it. I know some one here has put a H6 into their OBS. BEAST :bored:

thanks man! im usin the search and not coming up with a lot but will keep lookin. by issues turboing a na motor do u mean like the excessive compression and all? i know i will run into that but am thinking if i run low boost i can run it for a while. its not my dd but when its running good i will drive it a lot lol. so if i can make it work good i will blow it up and but another motor in there. awhile ago i was looking into puttin 2.5 heads on a 2.2 so im looking at that again and building it for boost but for now i just want to boost it right then bolw up the weak links lol.

Well my friend has a ej22 out of a 2000 obs that he put a 2.2 turbo on. It has ran strong for 50k "engine is at 220k was rebuild at 150k + when he rebuilt he installed the turbo" sense then he has gone through 2 transitions alot of clutches and a lot of work. It's a fast little OBS but he could have STI swapped it for the price of all the work he has done + man hours for only 12 pounds of boost.

Yea you find a complete 2.5T sti or 2.0/2.2T wrx engine + tranny and swap it all over. If you do that swap though you might want to look into better brakes like wrx/sti brake swapping. I mean it's aloootttt of work and alot of money to convert a NA to a Turbo but you never know if you can find a good deal or not! I don't know what your budget is but my friend just swapped his 2002 Impreza with a 2004 STi engine + Tranny and brakes for around $5000 i would have to call him to get the current cost.

For cheap horse power check out the "frankenmotor". You take 2.2 heads and put them on an early 2.5 block. Bumps the compression ratio to around 11.5/1 and will get you up towards the 200 hp mark with supporting mods.

All dependent on how much money you want to spend. So, how much money do you want to spend?
Cheap. Fast. Reliable.
Choose only two.

the reason i wanted to do a honda is cuz its cheap and fast lol and still fairly reliable. so i would choose cheap and fast. i love working on it lol. if i got turbo legacy stuff could i put a sti turbo on it? are the flanges the same?

You can build an open-deck 2.2l for boost with WRX heads... ;)
Or the EG33 H6 SVX engine swap...

Actually the 1.8 is a great motor for turbo because it has thicker cylinder walls so it can handle a decent amount of boost with supporting mods. Check out rs25.com EVERYONE SAYS NA MOTORS CAN'T HANDLE TURBO NOT TRUE
but that being said with high compression low boost will be your friend (4-8 psi)
There's sooo many 1.8 turbo builds and some 2.2 turbo builds. There's alot of info. The old 1.8 and 2.2 motors are great for boost
So to conclude, OP you can turbo your 1.8 on the cheap and make it reliable with the correct parts and research.
Here's a little something for you to get started and for all the doubters to see...
