I'm hopefully going to be buying a 99 impreza from a dealer for $3,xxx test drove it and all seems good except.
it was in good condition and was only missing the overflow tank, rad. fan, low ac, loose driver door electronic pannel, and a few other things that we have an agreement (contract) to have fixed before wed. otherwise 2 mechanics (incl. gf's dad) said that i was a solid car. oh yeh and the upholstery in the back seat is being redone (cracked badly). Oil smells good, all fluids in good condition, new timing belt and water pump. It has a bit of lagg when you first push on the pedal because of a loose couple of belts in the gearbox, but that's really it.
i drove the absolute hell out of it on the TD, and found a catback system for $240 and a couple other things not incl. suspension and something to replace the steelies. tyre wear is decent, about 40k left in them, weak sidewalls, but i'm not expecting a rally car for this much. i also need to buy some fogs for it, and an intake and well the catback would be super cool.
the only one on here that i know is i like it sideways from PAPA. I went from a VW jetta to an impreza which by VW owners standards is the only acceptable brand alternative to a VW, and it has AWD!

i'll take a few fotos of the int. when i get my cam down there, but i did make a $400 deposit/hold on it so i should be good until the wire xfer gets me enough money to buy it outright.
as you could see from the fotos, the car needs some mods done, first one is intake, then exhaust, suspension, wheels, tyres, make sure the stereo doesn't suck ass, and umm some lights, and a roll cage (eventually) as well as some 5 point harnesses... no i don't plan to keep this thing on the road.

and u probably noticed that it's not the right bonnet for the impreza, because it's a refurbed title and the bonnet is from an outback... yeh i want a scoop, and some vents on it. My gf of course has a 02 impreza RS (AT) and it's still pretty cool. so yeh, we'll both be subie owners.

Hey!!! I'm glad you joined up!!! I'm digging it the L and +1 for wingless too. $240 for a catback is a good price. Get that asap!
When (if ever) will you be back in Indiana?
We have another member that went from a VW to a Suby... Mr. Marty, aka Martinus. Though he continues to rag on it... must be a VW thing!

yeh it was on ebay, no real brand name to it, no idea how it sounds but apperantly they said it has a nice low rumble to it, which i want! it's also polished stainless so it'll look nice!
i don't know when i'll be back in w. lafayette, but going to a few of the papa parties, mainly bobby's (if he's still there) or umm dyermullet (can't think of his name atm) would be cool, esp. showing up in a soon to be rally car.
oh yeh, and for people who don't know me, i'm bri (proun. Bree).

Right on right on. You'll get the boxer rumble out of any catback. Its changing the headers that can change the boxer tone (equal length vs unequal length). You'll love it. Even if its an ebay special, it'll rock.
You'll have to stop by my garage, I live right up the street from bobby!
And if you're building this into a rallyx car, you're in the right place for sure!!!

We can definitely knock all that out. Our cars are incredibly easy to work on. Rust is the biggest roadblock. Bring whatever you have for it at the time, and we will knock it out in a weekend.

rust isn't a big problem here, i mean i know the place is surrounded by salt (hence the salt flats) but the humidity is so low that it takes forever for anything to oxidise.
i think i've only seen around 20 cars that were rusted in the 5mo. i've been here and that's damn low.

wow! not a bad find for only 3K... good kill. ditch those hubcaps though. Id rather rock steelies then k-mart special hubcaps. :) I'm just playin'.
So is this purely a toy to play with in the dirt or is it going to be a daily driver?

it's going to be a daily driver/ski/snowboard transporter and whatever else i want 2 do with it. and yeh, i might ditch the plastic hubs and just go with what's on there for the time being since it will take most of my reserve funds to get this car and register it.

Zima Auto FTW!!! 8) I live in SLC and was looking at that same car just a couple weeks ago! It looks awesome with the RS hood on it! Now it just needs the 00'+ bumper with fogs! Sweet ride though!

i also need to put a euro rear bumper on it so i can put my number plate on. there's a list of mods i want 2 do 2 it, but time and money will determine most of them and their orders of completion.

ok, i bought it for $3,700 and everything in it works, all the parts that were broken are fixed, and the upholstery is good too.

my rear suspension is going out as well as my brakes, bad thing, i have no idea if i have discs or drums on the front, but it's a 99 so i must have discs.. so with that, i'm going to get some ebc green stuff pads.

Good investment!! Hawk HP+'s are good stuff too, though pricey.
Maybe invest in some stainless steel brakelines while you're at it? :D
Are the struts just blown?

they might be just blown, i don't really know, but i'm going to order some EBC rotors and pads today (yeh, i'm going with slotten and drilled,) i don't think i'm going to be driving really hard on them in the winter so i won't worry about them cracking, and yes, i'm also going to run nice rotors and pads with steelies, cause i don't want to **** up nice wheels.
anyone have any idea what size the rotors are in a 99 impreza L sedan with steelies?

I wouldn't bother with drilled myself - I really like the look of drilled rotors, but after years of ignoring people telling me that drilled wasn't worth it, I read that DBA recommend street use only for their drilled and slotted, as opposed to the slotted only which are appropriate for street and track (http://www.dba.com.au/2006/products_4000.asp) and I had to admit to myself that I'd be buying the drilled for the look only :D The slotted look pretty mean anyway.

I've heard good things about slotted and dimpled...:jack:. Seem to be stronger than drilled.

i have to measure the existing ones to make sure the calipres will fit the new ones. i was told they're like 14in. but and was amased because that's huge, unless the inside diametre is also big, then it's not so big.
