View Full Version : Adding more lights.....Maybe.

OK, well since I got the FF500's I have been missing my amber fogs. I like the FF's, they make a nice addition to my FF1000's but as we know, they are no fog lights. I have been toying around with the idea of putting my 500 fogs back on my car, but leaving all of my other lights on the car... So, we are talking about 6 aux lights total on the front of the rally wagon! I did a little paintshop to see where I wanted to mount the lights... Give me your opinions... Ideally I want them as low and over as I can get them.
Centered... This would be the easiest, and probably strongest to add on to my current light set up.

Out on the corners.. I can get them down and out as much as this, but I will be sacrificing stability.

What I REALLLLLLLLLY want... But I just do not see it happening... :(

looks awsome in cornrers... but doesnt look to bad in closer either... i just think all the rally lights make it super agressive looking :)
what if you put them closest to the edges of the hole in the bumper

Like in the middle of the 2 options? I was thinking about that as well. Id have to move my k40 radar detector, but I might be able to hide that behind a fog light cover... Then I have to make sure I have room for a license plate. Radiators don't need any air....

you can get the JDM fogs for the GD's but theyre expensive as hell. I heard the HID kits with the covers, lights, and ballasts are upwards of $1200! they do look sick though. I have seen some other kinds that are pretty nasty that stick out in front of the stock cover areas but they get the job done.
I have a few tricks of my sleeve too fattie... involving 6 external lights ;) ... stay tuned!

I am not paying for the JDM conversion. RallyInnovations has a light pod conversion for the stock fog location, but I am sure it is a arm and a leg as well. I need to toy around with a few ideas...
Oh, get this! I just traded a set if NIB Hella Supertones for a 50w H1 HID kit!
PS... I WANT a damn hood pod!!! Dont want to pay $500 for one though!

Yeah i think its the Rally Innovations conversion that im thinking of. The ones that hold lights but the are pushed forward...

Haha put'em on the roooof!! lol jk.
I think towards the middle would be the best, you get a main focus of light that way.
Or, you can mount them facing a little outwards so you can see sideways better :P

yea pretty much... but didnt know that you needed to mount licence plate there...Yea man didnt you know? air hitting your radiator = less hp. the more things you have to block air from comming into the front of your car means the more aero dynamic you are and less air weight goes into your engine causeing your car to be lighter. this makes your car way faster... almost like it was HONDA FAST!

id say either the center or the far coroners where the fog covers are...

i think they look cool in the center. you'll wanna aim them outward a lil' bit though to illuminate more of the edges of the road (being that you already have PLENTY of light directly in front of you.
also, i'm interested as to what you're doing about switches for all this stuff. custom panel? integrated? holes in the dash? a pic would be cool

I have some ideas, but I am trying to think in terms of production. Just in case there are some sick individuals out there like myself that love light, I want to be able to produce the bar easy and efficiently. I have some new revision/design ideas that will make the bars lighter, stronger, and cut labor time down (at least in my head labor appears to not be as bad due to less welding).. I can add lights to the very end of the bar. Pretty much weld a tab off the ends, and bolt on the lights upside down. Fogs are meant to be towards the corners, so I am thinking of just doing that. Mounting in the center can get a little tricky. Well, there are easy ways of doing it, but making it simple, strong, and clean looking is the hard part....And then that leaves no room for a license plate.
As for switches... My 2 ff1000's (center 2) are activated with the Highbeams. I just wired the relay into them. The other 2 ff500's on the corners have there own Subaru fog light switch. I am thinking about tying the ff500's into the highbeam switch as well, and then wire the fogs to the OEM switch. What does that all look like inside? Like stock!
My HID kit should be here in a few days!!

+1 :-D On my legacy I put the switches under the hood, and wired in the relays to whatever light I wanted to be on with them... My fogs are tied into the side markers, and my driving beams are on the highs...
So atleast if a cop pulls me over I can pop the hood and turn them off...
Speaking of which I need to post pics of my new grill for the legacy ;)

I too am debating what im going to do about the switches. A custom panel would be sweet, in place of the stock stereo! right next to the fire suppression, etc ;) ..... dreaming.

fyi, for stage rally, the aux lights cannot be on their own circuit. they have to go on/off with the stock switch, and must turn off when the car turns off.
Now, I think you can have a separate switch to turn them on when the car is off, but you can't let anyone see that switch during tech. :)
My driving aux lights are currently connect to my high beam stock switch, so I'm good there. My fog lights are on their own circuit, so when I eventually go to stage rally, I'm going to have to re-wire them. (most likely to my stock fog switch)
My roof lights are on a separate switch as well, and while a panel of switches seems cool, its much nicer to have my driving beams go on when I just flip my stock high beams on. I've also killed my battery by accidentally leaving my fogs on when I leave the car.:shootsself:

I think I am going to try to tackle this this week. I want to see if I can fit 4 ff1000's on my bar as well. If not, time to redesign! I have also been tossing around the idea of trying to retrofit a HID kit into the FF1000's. Should be doable, but id have to run external ballasts. Just a thought at the moment though.... I do like the idea of reducing current consumption and increasing light output!
Also, I am getting ready to order up some aluminum and make some light bars. Kinda excited about this!

Good to know! I must have missed that part. The outside corners are going to be wired into the stock fog switch. The middle driving lights will have to go with the highbeams then.
Can you PM me a link to this info please?
prior to 2007, RA rules stated:
3.2.1.1 Lights
1. Original headlights may not be changed or removed.
However, the frontal glass, reflector and bulbs are free,
provided they are in compliance with the legal
requirements of the province or state of registration.
2. A headlight shall be considered as any lighting device
throwing a beam toward the front of the vehicle (dippedbeam,
long range lamp, anti-fog lamp).
3. Auxiliary headlights may be fitted, provided the number
installed is even.
4. It must be possible to turn off all high-beam headlights
and auxiliary lights with a single switch, which must
leave the low-beam headlights functioning.
5. It must not be possible to operate any fog lights fitted
without the front marker lights and taillights operating.
6. Auxiliary reversing lights may be fitted. All reversing
lights may only switch on by engaging reverse gear.
7. It is not permitted to fit any device that can alter the
normal functioning of the brake lights.
8. The mounting of maneuverable searchlight(s) is
prohibited.
but it appears that the single switch rule is now gone... it still seems to be a good idea to me and it is how mine is wired - my pod lights only work when my OEM high beams are on so if I dim the headlites (switch to low-beam) or turn off the OEM headlite switch then the pod goes out as well but the aux. light have their own individual on/off toggles in the center of the dash so I can run OEM headlites without the pod coming on....
this SpecialStage link has a ton of aux. light info:

I was playing around with this a little today. Since I want to mount 4 ff1000's I have to widen my bar by a inch and a half. As for the fogs, still playing with where I want to mount them, and how low I want to go with them.

ryan have you thought about doing a brush guard style light bar?
almost like the rally innovations bar, but with some more beef?
you probably remember me talking about this on modders, but my buddy is usually too busy with his exo-skeletond jeep, so we havent gotten around to it...

yes!
my idea was to use metal tubing, which i have a large stock of at my work..
and i also want to tie it in with the radiator support, like the rallyinnovations GC edition lightbar...
(noted your lower radiator support mount)

That was my first take at a light bar. I think it came out nice, but a little on the bulky side. It was more like a cage for the front of the car. It worked great. I wanted it to hold lights, and protect my bumper all in one. I wanted the bumper protection because I was just starting to get into rallyX, and I was kinda all over the place.. :waving: Got a little cone happy at times! I steered away from this because it was a PITA to make! I wanted something easy to reproduce, which my current set up is. And yes, the lights are HuGE!! I think they were the Rallye 3000's  I got a lot of "wtf!?!?" looks with them on! :lol2:
Oh yeah... I went with the square stock because I think it goes better with the car. The front end isn't all that round, its more cut and squared. I think round bar looks a little weird.

I mounted all the lights a while back. The 2 500's on the bottom corners must have added to much weight or something. Way to much light shake! I am now currently modifying my stock fogs and installing a 3000k HID kit into them.

Why the HID in the fogs? Most of the info I have read say not to do that. Daniel Stern has lots of good advice about auxillary lighting for cars, I've gotten most of my knowledge and plans for lighting on my car from his site and also from rallylights.com.
I'm totally digging on the rest of the project though and I wish you best of luck.

Well that sounds like a good enough reason to me. If I had some HID's laying around I'm sure I'd find a use for them too. And actually after re-reading some of my research the fogs are ok for HID since they don't need to be dipped for oncoming traffic(assuming they are aimed properly of course). So let me know when they're done cause I want to see some night shots.

It might be a few weeks. I have been wanting to rewire all of my aux lights so it doesn't look like a hack job. I also need to make a harness for these HID's. Then while I am at it, I might as well make a grounding kit. Whenever I can find the spare time to pull my car in the shop is when I will work on it. Work has been super busy though.

Totally understand, hence why I have some 500's and some no name projector fogs hanging out in my closet. Much to do and not enough time in the day.
