I have an 02 Impreza OBS with around 180,000 on it and I bought it used, have no idea if the timing belt has been changed. And everyone is telling me I need to change it if I havent. Is there any way to tell? Nothing about it on the carfax. Is it expensive to have done?

it can be costly... and at 180k even if it has been done its supposed to be done every 100k... so I would say yes... to check it pull the timing cover off and inspect the belt for any missing teeth fraying cracks things of those nature... but still... I would just replace it... the belt on the 02's are about 130 i think and then the labor varies on places that you take it too... however i would say $300 for the belt and having it installed would be in the neighborhood

Do not rely on visual inspection only with timing belts. If in doubt replace it. Timing belt is a lot cheaper and simpler than having one break and wiping out your valvetrain.

+1.. I'd hate to have that in the back of my mind the whole time I was driving the car.

Haven't seen you around for a while Wolfman, good to have you back.
