my friend has a mazda protege 5 wagon. he needed new brakes so he got ceramic pads. is this a bad idea someplace cold... like indiana or if you do dirt/gravel/mud/sand driving. or would i be better off just sticking with regular brake pads? eventually i want to get subaru 4 pots but dont have teh cash

You will be fine with a performance pad in cold weather.
I run Axxis pads in my street car.

Nope driving on dirt will not be a problem.

Actually driving on dirt might have less of a negative impact on pads and wear because i'd think that with less traction, the tires will just skid on the dirt. On the street the pads are forced to higher pressures to get the tires to lock up all the way...
Although getting rocks and stuff in there is always one negative effect of driving on dirt.

Ceramic pads can glaze the rotors and warp them quicker under hard braking and LFB'ing.
They work well, but drive a lot of heat into the rotor. Usually we run something like the Ferodo DS2500 or Hawk HPS on many "spirited" street cars, or rally x cars.
Much more pad than that on the street can be a bit of a drag due to the pads needing to heat up to work well..
