Who wants to get down and dirty? So Cal Rally X is back at Glen Helen!! :headbang:
So you think you got what it takes to be the next Ken Block? Well, there's only one way to find out. Come out to Glen Helen to get your dirty drifting fix and test your skills against So Cal's hottest Rally X drivers!
Just like the 1st Glen Helen race this year, this is a two day event. Saturday is going to be a practice day (no event timing provided) and Sunday is race day. Also as before, GH is featuring 6 laps on race day instead of the traditional 4. This means more seat time for you! Entries capped at 45 to ensure everyone gets the 6 laps.
Race Entry Fee for Sunday:
$80 Day of / walk up
(If you still want to pre pay you can, just PM me and we will work it out)
Practice Day / Saturday:
$10 / lap or $40 for 5 laps*
*One free lap for CRS or SCCA members who pre reg + pre pay for race day. Anyone can participate in the practice day. You do not need to be entered in the race.
Please Note: This is an SCCA sanctioned and insured event. As such, you must be an SCCA member to participate. If you are not a member, weekend memberships are available on site for $5.
For walk up reg and practice day, cash is king. No checks or other payment accepted.
Prizes
Class winners will get $50 off a set of tires installed at Americas Tire (www.AmericasTire.com (http://www.AmericasTire.com)) or $100 credit toward any wheel and tire set. Prizes are not valid for online orders, it needs to be redeemed in store. Big thanks to Aaron / 409industries & America's Tire for the donation!

Update!!
Classing
Street Stock 2wd (SS2) & Street Stock 4wd (SS4):
The name Street Stock comes from Street tires with Stock preparation level. As such these classes are for cars that have limited performance modifications, and are using street tires. Street tires include those tires sold as “Passenger Tires”. Street tires do not include ice/winter specific tires (currently designated by the mountain/snowflake emblem or the words ice/snow in the tire name), light truck tires (designated by “LT” on the sidewall), or tires designated for rally or competition use. The original tread may not be modified (siped or grooved). SS2 will be for two-wheel drive cars and SS4 will be for four-wheel drive cars. Street Stock Class cars must be stock (or equivalent) with the following exceptions:
The exhaust system does not need to be stock behind the catalytic converter.
Replacement air filter elements are allowed.
Computer chip upgrades are allowed.
Street Modified 2wd (SM2) & Street Modified 4wd (SM4):
The name Street Modified comes from Street tires (which in this case include ice/winter tires) with a Modified preparation level. As such, these classes are for cars that have been modified beyond the limits detailed above and are using street tires or ice/winter specific tires (currently designated by the mountain/snowflake emblem or the words ice/snow in the tire name). Light truck tires (designated by “LT” on the sidewall) are not allowed, nor are tires designated for rally or competition use. The original tread may not be modified (siped or grooved). SM2 will be for two-wheel drive cars and SM4 will be for four-wheel drive cars.
Rally 2wd & Rally 4wd:
Cars running tires that do not qualify for the "Street" classes will be placed in either the Rally 2wd or Rally 4wd class.

I know its no NASCAR race. I wont run my car its a long walk home if something breaks and to expensive to fix for a drive home. Maybe when the car is paid off Ill finally do a RallyX. But id be down to check out a rallyx for the first time and help what I can. Just gotta see how my money flow is at the time for gas/food/beer and more beer. I would see my self camping out.

This is an SCCA sanctioned and insured event.
As such, has anyone tried to get this on the SCCA "National Challenge" calendar? With San Diego bailing earlier this year, there would not have been one in SoCal and it would mean $$$ in contingencies. All you'd have to do is create a separate results sheet after the fact for those classes like what Burke did at Santa Rosa.

grr i need to just buy a scca membership so i can compete for TD contingency $$

The TD one (you win 2/3rd's of a wheel ) wouldn't be worth it but for Subaru, VW, and now, Yokohama it would be.
Anyway, just a suggestion.

Is this true? Paging B. Norgard...
bue car, i think your weekend SCCA membership allows you to be eligible for any contingency money so long as you are running the correct decals, etc.

First, you guys should probably let Dave or whoever see if they can get it done and then second, you could actually read the contingency forms and not have to speculate on who might get what:

Subaru contingency is good for any ALL WHEEL DRIVE subaru. so show up in a 1984 GL with 4X4 mode and you're in
show up in a certain 93 FWD impreza and they could care less.... :P that's why i went to prarie city in my sti last time, Since Prarie city isn't cool enough for CRS points this year *poke poke*

Nothing to do with being cool enough. CRS points need CRS classes to be scored, and if nobody is willing to do that then it's kinda tricky to make it happen.

You guys will have to both enter. Yes two drivers can share the same car. Just mention this to anyone who is running the grid during your class so that the can stage you in a way that will allow you guys enough time to switch out during your class.
Practice day is pretty informal... just pay for how many runs you want to do. :)

Yes, I will be at the venue around noon setting up on Friday. You can drop the car off no problem.

If I understand the points system right, you're definitely still in it. In fact, if you win, and Dave shows up to get 2nd, there'll be a 3-way tie for the season win.

1. Cars will be given a random starting order. Cars will run in this order for the first three laps, then the order will be reversed. Example: If there are four cars in a class they will run 1,2,3,4 for three laps. Then for the next three laps cars will run in the order of 4,3,2,1.
Penalties
1. All knocked down cones are a 2 second penalty. A cone is considered “knocked
down” if it moves from it’s original location, even if it is still upright. If a cone is
moved from wheel spray, it’s considered a downed cone.
2. 10 seconds for starting prior to the starter’s signal for “Go”.
3. Missed gates or going on the wrong side of a cone is considered “Off Course”. Each
“Off Course” is a 10 second penalty.
4. All penalties are subject to the Event Steward’s review. Additional penalties may be added, assigned or removed at the Chief Steward’s discretion.
Tech Inspection
All competition vehicles must pass the pre-event safety/tech inspection. Vehicles are to be presented ready for competition with helmet meeting Snell 95 certification or better. The Region will have a limited supply of helmets for loan, located near Grid. A valid driver’s license will be held until the return of the helmet.
No vehicle will be allowed to participate without the safety/tech inspection sticker on the driver’s side windshield upper corner.
Each class will hold a mandatory class inspection prior to the start of the official competition where class competitors may inspect all the other vehicles in their class and question eligibility at that time. The Event Steward will resolve all matters of eligibility and/or preparation non-compliance. Protests against vehicles shall be lodged no later than the start of the first competitor, given to the Event Steward at this time.
Rules of the Paddock
Competition vehicles should be worked on in the paddock area although minor repairs and adjustments can be made in grid
Do not pour gas, oil or coolant on the ground anywhere on the facility.
Pets must be on leashes at all times and cleaned up after.
4. No practicing, testing or fast driving is allowed in the pits, paddock or adjacent roads,
including the transit between finish and staging. Competitors will receive one notice of violation and will be disqualified if a second violation is witnessed.
Safety
1. A speed limit of 10 mph will be enforced at the event site including the paddock area and grid.
2. Children and pets are allowed on the event site. During active competition children under 12 and pets are not allowed in the grid, staging or course area. Pets must be leashed at all times.
3. Refueling vehicles must be accomplished with an assistant holding a fire extinguisher outside the vehicle.
4. Photographers desiring to enter a course area must be approved by the Safety Steward and they must be accompanied by a spotter. This spotter may not be a course worker at that location. Minors may not be photographers or spotters on course.
5. All incidents involving injury and/or property damage occurring on the event site or felt associated with the event must be reported as soon as possible to the Safety Steward, if not immediately available report to the Event Steward or Event Chairman.
6. If someone is under a jacked vehicle, for any reason, there must be at least one jack stand in place in addition to the jack.
Driver’s Meeting
There will be a driver’s meeting Sunday morning for Street Stock and Street Mod classes. There will be second drivers meeting in the afternoon for the Rally classes. The drivers meetings are MANDITORY for all competitors. Changes to the Supplemental Regulations and other items of information will be discussed at the meeting.
IT IS THE COMPETITOR’S RESPONSIBILITY TO CHECK AT REGISTRATION AND THE POSTING AREA FOR CHANGES TO THE SUPPLEMENTAL REGULATIONS.
Entrants as Workers
All competitors are required to work the event. Workers shall report to the Volunteer Steward (Chris Walker). Failure to work will result in disqualification.
Awards
Class winners will receive a $50 gift certificate to America’s Tire. Individual fast time of day winners(2wd and 4wd) will receive a Jackson Rally T-shirt.
Other
1. Competitors should only enter the course under the following conditions:
1. their duty as a worker requires it;
2. during a course walk;
3. as a driver/passenger during a parade lap for their run group; and,
4. as a competitor driving a timed run.
Items 2 and 3 (above) are allowed only during designated periods.
2. All course changes after competition starts must be authorized by the acting Safety Steward at the time the issue is raised. This does not mean that all issues raised about the course require action on the course. IT IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED THAT THE SAFETY STEWARD OVERSEE THE CHANGES.
3. An official can also be a competitor but must follow the rules in this section to avoid the perception of, or actual conflict of interest. The Safety Steward (and subsequent Safety Stewards if required) and Course Designer must not be the same person. This will avoid any conflicts of interest arising from an interaction between these two positions.
4. Officials who are competitors must not take any action or make any ruling that may have an impact on the outcome of the competition in their favor.
5. Officials who are also competitors must be aware that their duty as an official continues through the event regardless of role. They will still be able to compete, but if they notice safety issues those issues must be brought to the attention of the acting Safety Steward rather than taking action directly. The integrity of the sport rests in the hands of the officials and competitors acting in a responsible manner.
6. If a competitor, who is also an event official, has a concern about the event, conduct of another competitor or official or safety issue, he or she must bring the matter to the
attention of the proper official. After a description of the issue, the official must then step
away and let the other event officials resolve the matter.

It's the Bill Holmes/"too big of a truck for RallyX" rule. You're otherwise asking course workers to make a judgment call on whether it was spray or rear bumper and an epic Bill vs. Malsed argument about that at Laughlin several years ago cemented that rule into place. Just be glad they're not trying to spray-paint AutoX-style boxes on dirt () for the cones like some other regions.

OMG I remember that. Bill was trying to run over every cone on course, ostensibly because the whole thing was so narrow, and Malsed was running after him screaming to stop.
At last years Solo Nationals at Lincoln it rained so hard a shallow lake/puddle formed. Waves from passing cars knocked down cones twenty feet away. Unbelievably officials decided those counted, but there was a near revolt. Dunno how it resolved and thankfully it didn't rain for my runs.

we stopped counting at FORTY. . . Laughlin is actually quite pretty when everything is a shade of red. . . and heck, I could get the dually-water truck around the course. . . :D
Anyway - it's been that way for several years for exactly the reason MarkA said. It's also another reason why we've started minimizing the number of outside cones - can't roost INWARD. . . :D
I will be doing Tech both days - but if you're there Saturday, your Sunday tech will be really cursory - empty the car, you didn't leave your helmet at home, blah blah blah.
If you're running Rally - I will have a place to come to me to get teched. It will be your responsibility to get teched before your class runs! :lol2:

If the car is 3, or 4,or even 10 feet away and shoots a cone down with a rock or a bunch of dirt then its pretty obvious the car didn't hit the cone. I understand if its close, but I still think it's bogus. I dont really care what Bill did with his truck...

It doesn't matter. In practice with normal cars it happens very very rarely.
SoCalBoomer
10-08-2010, 12:39 PM
It wasn't really Bill that forced the rule. I got tired of people claiming that they didn't hit the cone, but after the cloud of dust had cleared the cone was down. . .
In practice, especially later in the day, you'll go around a turn and the workers won't be able to see JACK until the dust has cleared. . . so no way to see if it was you or if it was a roost. . .
so we made it very objective: if it's up when you go by, but down when you leave, it's down.
Honestly, as Phil said, it doesn't come into play very often.
A: minimal outside cones so not much to actually hit with your roosts, even with Rally tires on.
B: vehicles don't typically put up that kind of roost anyway - typically roosts are dust, not rocks, so they're not going to knock over cones.
C: trucks should be running flaps for safety reasons (you shoulda seen some of the rocks that trucks would throw. . . so Bill mounted RV flaps which lessened that a LOT).
Also, this was not a rule that was implemented in a vacuum. I held LONG discussion about it on the old RallyXPortal.com with a ton of people providing input. It was the VAST majority who said it was fine by them before I actually implemented it. . . and it's worked so far so it's stayed in.

Thats key.
I'm not trying to pin anything on you personally, I just dont like the rule. I haven't been in this "scene" in the last five years anyway, so I'm expecting things to be different. If I was around when this was being discussed though, I would've had a fit about it. I just think if it is obvious that the car was nowhere close to the cone, then it shouldn't count.
I can specifically remember this coming up back in the day. I believe it was at glen helen even. Thanks for the explanation though...
edit: It does kinda suck for the RWD guys with no flaps, although most of the RWD cars I've seen at rallycrosses aren't exactly breaking straps at the dyno...

great great great event. i have to admit, thing went extremely well after the initial impression with the changes done to the lot. since none of us had been notified that the grand stands and new course was put in recently, dave had to completely pull a course out from scratch on friday, and he did a great job. it will be sad to lose you as an organizer dave, but i just want to say its been a pleasure working with you.
that being said, i want to offer my help to any of the people that pick up where dave has left off. also if anyone else would like to get involved with helping out at these events, feel free to chime in on the future event threads.
now i looked at the results and it said that i had taken 1st for SS2, but i'm guessing the preliminary results may have been off because when the results were called out at the course, eric martin had 1st. all i know is that eric and my battle was really really close and that had to be the best competition i've had since i've been going out to rallyx events. i can't stress enough that i had a blast.
oh, and i think that people had said it before, but a big thanks to the course workers that helped out through the event, but a really really big thanks to the course workers that were out working for the rally class. that was a huge group of guys (19 to be exact) and no doubt it the course workers were out there for quite a while. if anyone on here was out there or talks to anyone that was out working for the rally class, please thank them for us. course working can be hot, dusty, and long, but the events wouldn't be able to function even remotely efficient if we didn't have enough people helping out.

Loren, that helmet cam was super cool! I might have to try something like that in the future. I did get some good forward facing GoPro footage from inside the car that i will try to get online tonight. Its too bad the second one was on the fritz. lame.
Overall, a awesome event. Probably the smoothest running one we've ever had at Glen Helen. Its a damn shame that we finally get everything right and Dave is done. It just goes to show that we have some very talented people organizing events out here in the southwest. So big ups for Dave keeping it going for so long. Thanks to Mike, Jay, Dean, and all the workers that were so willing to do what it took get things done.
That gully was insane. I don't think i ever got through it the way i really wanted to, but it made for some entertaining video (rocks flying forward and up onto the hood!) With such a large R4 class, we saw the course degrade quick... but it was a great challenge to try and get around the rough stuff and still put in good times. I think my favorite run of the the day was the muddy one after the break, the water truck ran the course 2x. It was slow on the clock, but a huge blast to drive!
Brian (my friend with the Forrester) and his lovely wife Julie were out there shooting tons of photos, which I will get online as soon as I obtain them. My friend Dan was out there too taking shots from up on the grand stand too so once everything is compiled i'll get a big flickr upload done so people can snag high-resolution downloads for themselves. Stay tuned for this!
Thank you everyone that came out, I'm glad I was able to give some new people rides in the car, i hope you'll come out to where ever the next one is going to be.
ALSO, there were several people that expressed interest in buying shirts, but never followed up with me at the event. I have all sizes in stock, please pick one up in the DI store!
