Hey guys, just wanted some input on to a nasty bearing type sound in the rear of my car.

When engine braking or accelorating I have a nasty ticking/rattling sound out of the rear of the car. It sounds as if I had a bad cv but I dont at the moment.

Just wondering if those of you with higher mileage cars have has the carrier bearings fail for the driveshafts and if its common on a high mileage car. The car is driving nice and smooth as well.

I haven't had a chance to inspect it yet, going to start tomorrow.

Any input would be great. I know sound can carry in some strange ways but im fairly confident its coming from somewhere behind the tranny. I was checking the rear end the other day and according to the fluid its in good shape.

wheel bearings?

jack the rear of your car up.

pull on the wheel at 3 and 9 o'clock.

pull on the wheel at 6 and 12 o'clock.

If you get movement in either direction, the wheel bearing is your problem.

-------------

If that does not help you find the problem jack your car up and put it on four jackstands.

then put the car in drive and have the wheels start spinning at the speed that idle will make it spin. Then see if you can find the noise.

This is a great way to get hurt so be very carefull when you do this.

oh and don't sue me.

I have had wheel bearings go on me a lot, and wheel bearings sound more like groan to me from the rear, especially when coasting, they also remind me of flying in a jet, just a constant sound when letting off the gas that drones inside the car. Thing is im not getting any of that at the moment. And when I park after being on the highway my hubs aren't warm (with the trucks and a lot of cars due to the bearing failure the heat generated makes the rims real hot) I haven't had any of that thats the only reason I haven't really considered the wheel bearings. And its a very ticky noise, almost like im dragging a small chain on the ground and its skipping off the pavement when engine braking or accelorating.

Ill be sure to check them anyways, id be stupid not to.

Thanks for the possible pain warning L & E, I do agree.lol

I just hope its not the center diff making a racket, it really sounds like the rear of the car, but sound does carry in strange ways.

Thanks guys

From your description, sounds like the rear bearings are smoked.

Words like drone and groan are dead giveaways..:)

thats the thing tho, theres no drone or groan, i totally agree, when i hear those two BAM, wheel bearings.

Heres a better way to describe it.. "Clackidy clack". Sounds like im climbing up a hill in a roller coaster waiting for the decline. Its not constant by any means, it also could sound like im dragging chains under the car, and they are skipping off the pavement.

The traditional wheel bearing sounds are nowhere to be seen. And I checked them and they are still nice and tight.

Just picked up another tranny with a good center diff, along with a new rear diff. When the motor comes back out sunday im going to change those as well. Hopefully that takes car of it.

Could be a number of things. Wheel bearings(already discussed), diff bearings(side or pinion), could even be exhaust noise from vibrating against frame or mounts(bad hangers).

You can do as recommended and lift the car and check with a stethiscope to pin-point the location. I would suggest that you do this on a lift rather than jack stands though.

Good luck.
