I've got a bad oil leak on my first subaru... its a 98 impreza l with a ej22 engine. I've scoured the forums and I'm keeping an eye on my oil levels, and I've narrowed it down to the front main seal, which I'm also aware means the oil pump seal as well, and a new timing belt.
While I'm very mechanically inclined, this is my first ever subaru, and I'd rather have a walk through to follow so I don't miss anything or botch the job. It's a daily driver so it cant afford to be down for more then a weekend, so if anyone has a walkthrough, or could make me one, I'd appreciate it.
i usually just lurk but i did this just a few weeks ago. i found a timing belt how-to for a 2.5L but it worked just fine for my ej22 (i suggest the same) i looked for a thread on a site not half as cool as this for "Meatys Timing Belt Changing Guide" which walks you through most of what you need. when you come to the crank seal unbolt all the bolts holding on your oil pump and get it off (its stuck on w/rtv which you will need more of) you don't want to gouge the sealing surface. so when you get it loose slide the cover off the crank and push it out from behind. clean off the back of the cover where it was sealed to the engine and the engine as well (carb cleaner works well on a rag to clean off the old rtv or sealant thats left) lower the front of your car to let some of the oil out then jack it back up and put your stands back under the car so you don't die alone in the garage by yourself alone w a car on your chest. ok so clean off all the oil that has leaked out, put your new crank seal on the oil pump cover and a nice even bead of rtv on the engine where the cover will touch going around all your bolt holes. so the key here is to pay attention to where your crank and the actual pump part line up and put them in corresponding angles as the crank spins your oil pump (you'll see what im talking about when you have it all apart). slide the clean cover w/ the new seal over the crank and where it steps up to make a tight seal angle one side on first and push the other side over and on. its a little pita but you can do it. make sure the pump and crank is ling up or you'll spend time trying to get it on and it wont go. hand tighten all the bolts then an hour after that tork them down to 30 ft/lbs i believe. don't over tighten any of the bolts going back on !!they will strip and that sucks!!!
i hope i helped, if i can do it im sure you can too just take it slow and don't stress
