So i know i'm opening Pandora's box by doing this.... but its the only way to get things up and running the way we want it! Id rather get this over with now than have problems keep presenting themselves over weeks and weeks.

I haven't tried things like uploading avatars, and things like that yet. I really don't have a lot of time right now to go through each and every feature of the new forums so as you find issues, please post them up in this thread.

Thank you.

I was gonna complain about the time still being GMT but you fixed that. Cool..

So I'll go for:
- Missing smilies
- Your private (admin and mod) boards are showing to everyone :)

[edit]
Whoa cool edit feature, a sparkly thing leapt out of the edit button and the edit window opened right here in the post!

err..

Oh yeah, the smilies that are in place are anti-aliased against a light bg, but the bg is black..

When I click on the Gallery link on the home page, and then click on Store, it takes me to this page (http://dirtyimpreza.com/store/agora.cgi)

With every other navigation bar button, it does not direct me to that page.

The links on the main page are no longer linked to their corresponding threads, I guess the url of each thread changed during the vBulletin upgrade

Not really an issue, just an observation - all of my PM's have been marked as unread now

Yeah the PM's thing is more of an annoyance than anything. I just went through and marked them all as read.

The graphics ill have to work on. Sucks that everyone and their mom likes white background forums, but i dont. I think the dark looks sweet, so itll be a bit while i get the anti-aliasing under control.

smilies will be updated as time permits. Ill try to get these going soon.

Mod forums are hidden again.. thanks for the heads up (not that anyone really uses these too much, but maybe in the future)

The blocked login was a temporary problem related to importing all the users from phpbb into vBulletin. This is fixed.

Yeah its a bummer about old links not going to the right pages, but those will slowly phase out. Ill try to update some of the bigger ones on the news pages.

Thanks for the tips everyone. Soon this will be a well oiled machine! Im loving the performance / speed increase! You can really jump around from topic to topic quickly!

I don't seem to be getting my E-Mail notification to my subscribed threads... I've double checked all my settings and everything seems to be in order. I have posted since the switch, so I really don't know why it's not working.

By default, during the forum move all your subscribed threads were kept, but i think they are set to "no notification". Update your subscribed threads to "instant email notification" so that you will be emailed. I used a test account to simulate a test post to a thread I am subscribed to and it worked.

Make sure "contact@dirtyimpreza.com" is white listed on any of your spam filters, etc. As this is where the notification emails will come from.

well im not sure what the problem (all of the above was done, and double checked) but i just got a notification for this thread, so i guess that means it works! Thanks.

I was just going to ask if I could fix these for you. They just need to be properly blended with the alpha (transparency) channel. I've already downloaded the obvious ones; I just need to edit/test them for the gray background. Unless you already know where to get a fixed set I'll go ahead & work on them for you. Shouldn't take long.

You have a technique for re-anti-aliasing GIFs? Intriguing. Every time I've tried to do that (without original art anyway) it's been a giant PITA cos the bg colour gets mixed in with the edge of the image, and there's no simple way to reblend it. I suppose with a fixed shape like a smiley you could do a circle selection, contract it a pixel, inverse the selection, delete and resave with a dark matte, but it kinda seems like a lot of hassle. Although if they're all the same size, a macro would work. I bet someone has encountered this problem before though.

Dusty, if you could do this for me that would be AWESOME. Its the kind of thing that i would like to do, (needs to be done) but i can't get to at the moment. Thanks for your help!

Here's how you can get that stuff back:

User CP -> Miscellaneous Options (bottom of page) -> Message editor interface

Change it to standard or enhanced and you get the image and bold etc back. But wait! There's more! You also get all sorts of other stuff too! Like bullets! And the ability to use Comic Sans.. ugh.

Seriously, it's pretty damn cool.

Phil! thanks for pointing people in the right direction!

Yeah i might have to see about enabling this by default. On another note. You'll notice that there are a TON of old threads floating around. Its ok, when the import was performed it reverted many of the forums to display only the last week's worth of posts instead of everything. I've enabled that ALL threads be displayed, eventually the old stuff will get pushed to the bottom again.

I dont know how to manually manipulate the database to sort these correctly. Its really weird.

EDIT: Ok i think i figured it out, but its a time consuming process. Ill try to get all of the forums sorting correctly.

Hey, this is fixed. I had to run a quick query on the database to update all the existing users. By default, everyone is going to have the "advanced" editor. I think its just more industry standard this way. All new users by default should have this displayed too when they post.

I thought I did, but I too discovered the PITA factor. It can be done, but it takes some creativity & finesse, and the icons don't look quite the same afterwards, based on how successful the blending is. It would be easier if I just made a new set from scratch.

Have no fear, I'm far from giving up!

Okay well that's bad but it's a relief to me.. I've been working in the web industry for twelve years so I've come across that problem a _lot_ and I was feeling kinda dumb that there was an easy way to do it that I didn't know :)

But yeah GIF transparency is old-skool, either on or off, no percentage of alpha, all dithering. The smilies usually have a 1px black border so you might be able to crop back to the yellow of the smiley, then add a 1px black circle back in as a border and export aliased to dark bg. Anyway enough geek/designer talk.

I think it'd be cool to have some DI-specific smilies too. Subaru badges and stuff, maybe a cone icon? :D

I agree. the way GIF's handle transparent backgrounds is retarded. The icons that you see that aren't messed up (like the "new posts" status icon) the edges were literally deleted to remove the stupid spots, etc.

Ill work on the smilies.

My smilies ar Xs. . .

Try pming McBrat at www.UltimateSubaruMessageBoard.org (http://www.UltimateSubaruMessageBoard.org) for questions about vBulletin. We've been running it over there for a while now, most of the bugs are worked out. There's a couple of cool upgrades too.

409industries
11-13-2007, 02:23 PM
yeah vbulletin has a lot of flexibility and upgrades available. For example I will be doing the youtube tags to allow you to embed videos directly into posts. I really like that one.

My buddy Ben the did the migration knows all the tricks to vbulletin, i just have to balance my time between all the different stuff going on. Both DI and otherwise...

Fixed may of the smaller images on the threads that were looking crappy. (multi quote, AIM, MSN, ICQ, etc, report post, etc.)

I have to say, its starting to look pretty nice! :)
