So with the 20g upgrade right around the corner, I need to do a few things to the hood and under the hood.
1) I need an sti hood scoop. these are not cheap.....even off of ebay. Looking at $200 painted.
2) I need to get rid of my CAI....I DO like the cold air aspect of things, so I was thinking of getting a K&N short ram w/the heat shield ($260), BUT I also wanted to put in some kind of vent in my hood above the filter, so kind of like a mini hood scoop for it. Little bit of work, but I thought it might be fun, and obviously would look different. (I like differentiating from the hundrededs of other WRX's on the road).
So I'm looking at +400 plus the parts/labor for this custom vent. Then I recently found THIS:
http://sfbay.craigslist.org/sfc/pts/466606836.html
So....assuming the quality is there and this isn't a knock off......thoughts? I'd keep it black....so silver and black......I dunno. Thoughts?[/img]

dood that's a good deal that's close to what i paid for my fenders and yes go for it you'll spend alot less for this than going with something else and match paint...
when you have to fix something on a low budget...carbon fiber ftw!!!

mmmmm carbon fiber...
on the intake side why don't you run the intake into the fender well like so many others?

I'd say check it out in person first. If the quality looks good, then it might be the way to go. Some of the composite work I've seen that seems to be norm is downright junk for the money. Case in point would be some of the stuff 06drtywgn is using on the prerunner truck he posted about: expensive, widely used, and pure crap.
As far as the short ram goes, I'd say "meh". There was a post a while back on nastysock where a tuner was doing dyno runs with a short ram. There were definate improvements at first, but as the runs went on it started to suffer quite badly from heat soak to the point where there were little to no gains. We don't exactly have the best airflow going at the speeds we see in rallyx so I think this may be a valid concern. That extra vent may help, but by how much?

well, I just know I have to get rid of the CAI because of WHERE the filter is located.....as far as short ram, I agree, I'd rather not have the filter IN the engine bay...but if it has a heat shield (the K&N one does) and there's another air source coming in under the hood....I'll take that.

another thing i would do is short ram intake with heatshield and i dont know if you've seen these but they run a hose type thing that hooks up to the end of the cone filter than can be mounted to the outside (like the intake hole that your CAI goes into it looks like a funnel that way your filter sits (and i agree with this one specially because of water dirt mixture making your way all over that btch) inside the engine bay and you still get cold air directly into the filter.
i'll look for the pictures of the set up.

i saw something like that on a lancer. it had the short ram and heat shield around that then it had a funnel that went into a hose that opened up inside of the heat shield right infront of the cone... not to sure how it would work at starting speeds or low speeds but going pretty fast should work well with it.

are you running a top mount intercooler or a front mount.
I would be worried about the air flow comming from behind the radiator affecting the air flow into the hood scoop. all the race cars I have seen with the big hole in front of the hood scoop runs a front mount intercooler.

new hood before a new bumper? ;)
It looks nice Seibon generally has some decent stuff, their new dry carbon stuff is awesome, but $$$. I keep seeing the cheaper stuff fade and look really bad after about a year or 2 on most people's cars, if its garaged you might not have to worry about it too much.
Theres always a big debate about intakes but i have a very simple setup and it has worked wonderfully for me. GP elbow delete and a K&N drop in filter. Now this probably isn't going to work with the increased requirements for the 20G, but its very simple, and looks completely stock!
My friend is running a 20G and has to use one of those crappy foam filters. those things suck.

top mount.
and I thought of that....well, am STILL thinking about that. Logically, it seems even if you had air going into both the vent and the scoop, by design, the input pressure from the scoop would always be greater than the vent.
Also, air going underneath the car acts as a suction, it pulls the air down and out from the engine bay.
Air flow through the IC (or even a radiator) is actually quite slow once it hits the IC face. But there's a lot of pressure at that point from the deceleration.
Think of it this way....if you have compressed air at the vent and scoop (simulating a 40mph wind). The compressed air at the scoop is pushing air through the IC. Now the compressed air at the vent....well, there's no way that air is going to flow around the engine and underneath the IC and slow down the air going through the IC. the physics of it seem impossible.
It will, however, push air in the engine bay around and out the bottom....the IC air never gets to do this cause it slams into the IC. The air from the vent is unrestricted and is pushed evenly through the engine bay and is pulled out underneath the car.
So for that vent to take air in and push it back up through (or even slow down) the air coming out of the IC is pretty slim (imo...obviously I have not empirical data/tests to prove this, going on intuition here)
Theoretical discussion anyone?

If it fades, I'll probably just wet sand it down and have it painted silver again. OR, swap out the scoop and cut my oem hood up for the vent (if I feel its beneficial).
I'm considering just going back to a stock intake set up, I'd just have to find a used stock set up.
I'm very happy that my new job allows me the 'problems' of having to make all these decisions :D

Triple Post!
Erik's question actually renewed an old test I've been meaning to do....tape yarn all around the hood scoop to actually SEE how the air flows around/through it at different speeds (and getting it on video, of course). I want to do the same for the WRX spoiler.

i hope this helps, but not sure it f this is what you are talking about. and yes i know i need a heat shield, but i love the fact that it falls right below the hood vent on my GC, which i beleive that is what he is going for, in essence. right?

my understanding of the vents on the hood, is to carry air out of the engine bay.
air flows in though the front bumper and goes up to where a hole is cut where the battery sits in a stock car. there is a oil cooler on the battery side, and a transmission cooler under the the other side.

thanx rllyrckt that is exactly what i'm talking about (i love the color of the car too ;) ), and with the help of a heat shield that would be the perfect set up...now, would a bypass valve be overkill at this point?

what is this "bypass valve" that you speak of, just wondering

in the case of filter coming in contact with water (usually in a cold air intake) the bypass valve would prevent the intake from sucking water into engine=hydrolock(verybad thing) mmmmmk
now that i think about it the air filter in your car would be working as a bypass valve if the end of the "hose" was to take in water the filter would
let more air in becuase of resistance at the hose(water weight)

at Laughlin I paid a little more attention to the evo hood and yes, this is how its designed (to suck air up and out).
I thought the pic of that WRC hood looks more like an air dam to suck/force cooler air under the hood, but I could easily be wrong.
If it does push hot engine air upand out, wouldn't that just go right into the scoop?

If you had a front mount intercooler that would work great.

I have the WRC hood from Seibon, it is great for venting hot air, doesn't do anything for intake as it has a small lip in front of the vent. (I hope I'm not completely lost on this conversation, I went through the same private hell last winter with a replacement hood.) If you are looking for something to bring in more cold air, you're better off with a CAI in the fender or custom work on your existing hood. The Seibon CS style would work better for this...

sooo, I pulled the trigger the other day and got the WRC style hood. Its actually the Seibon RC hood for an 04-05WRX.
I was kind of nervous because part of me is thinking....CF hoods are rice, but they had a xmas sale and it was even lower than before, like another $160 lower.
I just installed it....its pretty sick. Lighter than the aluminum OEM....everything bolts right in (GrimmSpeed dampers still fit perfectly). And since I already have black rims, the black/silver looks pretty sweet (imo).
These pics are in the dark, I'll have more later.

That looks great Jon. I have been looking at this hood also. I have really bad water spots on mine and the protection warranty I have is paying for the hood to be repainted, so I figured why not get a new hood and get it painted for free.

After my collision I need a new hood and this looks good. I'd love to go CF...and at that place it's not much more than an OEM.
I've always wanted the WRC (RC) one for my 07 but the cw2 is cool to...and that is my second choice (some of the wrc cars have those vents on the side of the hoods to) i'll take a look at the blue CF as well and see what that is all about. fortunately my car is blue/black themed so the CF would look good. :)
