i might be picking up an obdii obs for next to nothing with a blown 2.2 na motor. i dont know i bunch about it except it has all the sweet body stuff i want for my car lol. but i might just fix up the obs and sell my car. anyways what can i do to a 2.2 na motor? stroke? bore? turbo? ecm? im pretty broke lol so will probably pick up a stock motor and run it till i can throw parts in it or blow it up. or should i look for a special ej22 or maby ej25 to put in. i want to use the same harnesses etc tho thanks tyler

It all matters, if your looking for reliability, there are a few ways you could go.

2.5 SB with 2.2 heads (dual exhaust port) with some cams and porting. it will give you a higher compression screamer. i plan on doing this with mine later since my heads are already P&P. just need a perfect power 6 or something similar to tune it

so i got the car today!! pics soon. its a 99 impreza outback sport rocky mountain edition(?????) lol. its got like 210,000 miles so still life but i will go thru it and see whats worn out for sure. the motor is shot tho. wont even start now. when i pulled a spark plug from #3 it had hit the piston pretty hard lol. so my guess is the block is shot or needs some pretty good work. but maby just maby the heads are good. i will know in the next week or so. at the shop we just did a 2.5 in a lego outback that kinda sounded like blow by or head issues to me. i can get that motor for $150 so i might try to do the 2.5 block and 2.2 heads. can i simply bolt the two together with all oem parts and drop it in? it sounds like it will be a little stroker/bore upgrade from my 2.2 but probably be the same other then that so should drop right in. i am thinking about keepin this one and sellin my 93 impreza. im pretty broke so will need to get a motor ready pretty cheaply and it sounds like possibly the hybrid motor might of just droped in my lap lol.

http://denver.craigslist.org/pts/1754716527.html will this motor outta 90 legacy fit in my 99 using my harness and stuff? both are 2.2 so maby just use the shortblock

if they are both 2.2 it should be a direct swap. your harness should work also. try to find one with dual exhaust ports so any NA header will fit

Let me preface this post with the info that I've built many 2.2 and 2.5 based street and rally cars, and owned many of both as well.

2.5 NA's of all vintages will give you headaches..Stick with a 2.2, its a warhorse.. If you want to do a hybrid run a 2.2 block with 4 cam (DOHC 2.5) heads. You can also run a lightened pulley, flywheel and cams for some more grunt.

They all blow head gaskets, and many have lower end/bearing issues after overheating. So basically any of them (except freshly built) can't be trusted. If you want a fun motor that will last go for a 2.2..

FYI, they WON'T all interchange. There are single exhaust port and dual port varieties, as well as EGR and non EGR varieties.. Each of them have different manifolds and sensors. You need to run heads that are compatible with your '99 ECU. Either the stock one if you are staying with later 2.2 sohc heads, or a '97-99 Outback/GT ECU, ideally a 5 sp. ECU.

Also, your 2.2 heads and DOHC 2.5 heads are interference, so the valves in your heads are most likely bent..:(

Hope this helps.

ok so a 2.5 block really wont do me much good? on my 2.2 (original motor in my car) the timing belt is still there. im not really sure what happened inside lol. i think what will work best is see if my 2.2 is dual or single exh port. then see what egr stuff mine has and get a matching used motor and drop it in. then keep my 2.2 thats broke and see about building it. unless...

i can take my 2.2 and my buddies 2.5 and put good parts outta the two and build a motor. will my harness plug into 2.5 heads? or 2.5 block?

ok so i think i will just be getting a obd2 2.2 and droping it in. mine is single exh port. so will a double drop right in and run correct off my computer and wiring? i will pick up the different exhaust to but will i have to change anything else? we were thinking the cam sensors might be different

as far i can remember any OBD II 2.2L should drop right in and plug in.

phase 1 and 2 motors are not interchangable because of the different intake bolt orientation

so would the dual exh port and single be 1 and 2? the dual is from a 95 and the single is from my 99 both obd2

question for awd.net....... will the 2.2 block (with single exhaust port heads) work with the 2.5 dohc heads? if so what kind of cams can you get for this kinda set up.

i just did this swap 95 to 97 i ran into miner problems the 97 ecu will not work in the 95 chassie starter wiring is an issue another is the 97 did not have evap canister so u can use a newer or older block but use the same intake manafold and fuel inj system as far as buel or single prot heads it did not make a difference but since u have the engine out gasket port the intake, match port the heads and do the same on the exhaust side as well it is something u can do without removing the heads from the block it will give u an extra 10-15 horse that u can feel on low end an top end good luck happy building

i do plan on building the bottom end and heads for possible boost later on. I have invested in a rallitek p6 ecu so i can tune it. I also have a hook up on a rolling road dyno in Columbus, OH. i am shooting to get this build ready by next spring. i got acouple other projects goin right now but i got some room to move now:D.
