Got together with some friends this weekend and went out off roading. Sadly I wasn’t there the whole time but here are some pictures from before and after. All in all, there were several vehicles there.

1980’s Jeep Wrangler, lifted 35” BFG A-Ts
1986 Subaru GL wagon stock
1995 Subaru Impreza LX, lowered all season tires
1988 Subaru GL-10 Hatch, 4” lift 29” Super Swampers
1990’s Jeep Cherokee stock
2001 Jeep Wrangler, 3” lift 33” mud terrains.

It was a fun time. Followed some trails through the woods. The Impreza kept up pretty good, did pretty much everything the other cars did except for the deep water/mud and the real difficult articulation. The GL Hatch won the day. The two lifted jeeps got stuck in the deep mud and were pulled out by the Hatch. The hatch showed them both up by going through the same section forwards and in reverse w/o a problem.

Here are a few pics:

The hatch being unloaded (unbalanced tires = not good for road driving)

The wagon had some issues with ground clearance

Pretty good flex for a stock wagon that’s 20 years old

Impreza doesn’t quite have the approach angle to make it though perfectly

Is there alot of power loss in the GL? did you re-gear?

Well there isnt much power to start with. Its an EA81 same as my brat. 1.8l gear driven push rod. its near indestructible but only puts out like 60hp 70 ft-lbs at the crank (NEW). so when you put on some 29" swampers, and are running in 4wd there isnt much power to spare.

The end goal for the hatch is a EJ22E Phase 1 swap. 2.2l and non interference so no worries about a timing belt breaking. swap pretty much doubles the hp and tq at the crank, plus there are alot of bolt-ons mods for the EJ22Es comparatively.

re-gearing would be sweet, but to get a decent crawl rate you are looking at dual tranfser cases and a bunch of other stuff.

Haha that had to be a blast. Too bad the wagon took a beating.

this is a very inspiring thread. it influences me to "do things" to my car. such as lift it, slap some knobbies on it and romp the bejesus out of it in a wooded area. :)
