View Full Version : Steering Knuckle repair - cost? 230,000 miles too much?

I've been looking for a 2.5 RS to buy to be my rallyx car so that I don't break my WRX, and so that I can learn to drive a car without having turbo power to cover up sloppy driving, and came across a car with 230k miles (but new tires, woot!) and a broken steering knuckle.
First: How long could I realistically expect this car to last? According to the ad, the engine was torn down recently, and replaced all seals, the timing belt, and clutch, and the car is said to 'run great.'
Second: How much could I expect the repair of the steering knuckle to be? Is this a serious repair, or something I shouldn't be too worried about?
To put this all into perspective, If I got a year, maybe 2, out of the car, going to 1 or 2 events a month, I would be very happy. My main purpose for it would be so that I wouldn't be rallyxing my daily driver, worrying about ruining something, so I can focus on learning to drive, while saving up for either a more solid platform to eventually build into a stage car, or an already built stage car. Either path then, I was hoping to find an RS, in which case I would already have a parts car if things go wrong with this one!
Thanks!

What motor is it? You could get a steering knuckle from a junkyard possibly and then just have to get the bearings and stuff done i think. someone smart jump in and prove I don't know anything though. As for the motor, my buddy's dad had a 2.2 last 300k before he did the headgaskets, and he didn't have to do them, he just decided to and he said the inside of the motor looked just awesome. The 2.5 motor with its notorious head gasket problems are long lasters also I have heard if rebuilt with the ARP studs and proper gaskets. I say if its a good price and actually does run good then get it. Nothing is better than having a dedicated car to beat up :D
the steering knuckle is an easy fix just get a used one at a junk yard or the classifieds here or nasioc or some place try and find one with good bearing or get some new bearings and while its out take it to a shop to have a new one pressed in. replacing the knuckle can be dome with hand tools you will need a 32mm socket and a 3 foot breaker bar to get the axle nut off but thats the hardest part.

It's the 2.5. That's good to hear!
Any problems that are commonly happen with a broken steering knuckle I should check out before deciding?
Thanks!

I have a '93 (1.8L) with over 265k on the odometer, I do not know what the condition of the motor and everything, but its my part time daily and dedicated beater.
if its cheap enough and doesnt burn much oil its probably good for a second car. and if they are truthful on the motor maintainence/rebuild it should last at least a year if not more.

:( Car has been removed from craigslist and I still haven't received a response from the seller, so I'm assuming it's been sold already.. Thanks, though guys! If anyone sees a cheap Impreza for sale in NY, let me know, haha.

Hey man, I'm going to the CNY SCCA Rallycross on the 24th, is that what you meant? (I'm assuming no, since PSCC is having one that weekend and is closer to you IIRC..) Shoot me a message if you want to chat more, so the boards don't get messy and off-topic.
