OK :( so i went to the dealer today to check my power steering pump and im looking at about 1200  to replace pump with new one, flush the power steering system and replace a "missing" steering rack boot :shootsself: i did notice that one when i changed my oil a week ago.

i guess the pump alone is like 500 and some bucks :angryfinger: im sure the boot is only like 40 buck if that; the rest would be LABOR!!! :punch: is there anyone here that is familiar with this procedure that can lend a hand guide me in the right direction or should i just bite the bullet get money and get it done by the dealer?

i've never worked on these kindsa things before so i really dont feel comfortable messing with my DD.

what do you guys think?

I have a used power steering pump that works that I can sell.

it should not be that big of a problem to change all the stuff out. you will need to get your car realigned after you replace the boot though. The rest of the stuff is cake.

1200 huh... screw that! Source the parts you need yourself (used or from the dealer), and we'll hold a "Wrench on WRXCMM's car" meet. Between all of us crazy people around socal I'm sure we can come up with the tools, a garage, and maybe the know-how. The know-how is iffy

from what ive heard a lot of time a blown ps pump can be fixed with just a rebuild of the pump itself (new seals) though I could be completely wrong, its been known to happen from time to time (the me being wrong part)

Yeah according to the tech at subaru the bearings are gone that's why there is a whine...

Is ur car drivable? I will be at the shop all weekend but I have alot to do. You are more than welcome to come and park it in the alley and use some tools. Also there is a NAPA close by incase you need some misc stuff.

thanx man the car is drivable... i think what i'm gonna do first is change out the boot since that's another possible failure/expence if i dont fix it, do you know if i gotta relube/regrease the assembly?.

i might swing by your shop, could you pm me the address and phone # just in case.

as far as the pump goes, that can wait a little bit more i just gotta deal with hard steering (no biggy) and since LandE is selling a pump that i gonna buy once i get my paycheck then i can tackle the pump do you know about flushing the power steering system?

Sounds like changing the muffler bearings, or buying more blinker fluid.

I would just refill the powering steering with new fluid and you should be set. Unless the fluid smells like it has been burt out you should be fine.

at the rate of 1,200 its worth trying to do yourself. if you screw up it will still cost the same minus the parts
