so i recently bought a 91 legacy 2.2 turbo for a street swap but im thinking im gonna just use it as a rally car:) so this will be the main thread for the car. im thinking i would like to build it for the prepared awd class. how hard is that for a beginner? i have never raced in a race where you turn lol other then some stupid illegial stuff when i was younger. for that class can i put on my sti tmic? i figure i will be fine with stock sti exhaust as long as i still have a cat on it. then can i gut the interior, get rid of the sunroof, and possibly build a full roll cage? and tie in strut braces? thats kinda my plan for the car lol. i was also thinking about putting forester struts on it for more ground clearance and possibly remove any sway bars it has(looking for feedback on this). i wanna start in rally cross then move up to more extreme rally stuff like jumping and all lol. i am a noob to all this so if im sounding like grandma at the thanksgiving table let me know lol

Lots of LOL'ing, LOL.
Much searching in your future, I see...
The early Legacys make a great platform for rallying; they were, after all, Subaru's first foray into the WRC.
The class you eventually run will determine what equipment you can and cannot add. For stage rally, the sunroof will need to be deleted and a rollcage built to spec is required. However, newbees are only allowed to run n/a for the first season's worth of races.
For rallyx, depending on your sanctioning body/ hosing organization, pretty much any mod is okay so long as its street legal.
Check out the rallycross prep and stage rally prep sections for more info.

lol ya lol i tend to lol a lot lol jk.
so gut interior, cage, sunroof deletete etc will be fine pretty much no matter what? but the turbo is gonna be the issue? to bad mine is stock turbo thats gonna be tricky to delete for a season lol.
ya im gonna have to do hellva lotta research. just didnt have a bunch of time this morning and was excited lol. i will be asking a lotta questions but will try to do as much research first so at least i have an idea about what im asking.
one person on rs25.com said using a legacy i will end up breaking something and be out for a season. what kinda things will i break? and where are the weak links in these cars? i will try to stock up on extras so when i break stuff i can fix it quick. and what are some proven ways to fix these weaknesses?

how could i set up an autilag system on my car lol? can i do it on a switch like an extra injector/sparkplug in exhaust so it can be on a switch lol or dose it not work like that?
did some research and looks like its all in the ecu and needs to be an aftermarket which i cant run in the middle class (slightly modified 'prepared' i believe) so unless there is another way to do it ,or do something that will work, i will have to wait till i get some experience. i sure would like my c ar to pop and spit flames and keep boost up. i dont wanna kill turbos simply for pops tho

It sounds, to me, like you need to decide where you're going with this car/project.
Were it me, I'd keep the motor and interior stock (with the possible exeption of adding harnesses) for the time being, work on the suspension, and (mostly) driver skill getting as much seat time as possible in rallycross and rally schools if there are any locally available. While doing that I'd be saving money for a complete stage rally transformation (not cheap) when I got to that point in my rallying 'career'.
Weak points on the car tend toward the transmission but anything is breakable if bashed hard enough.

You have lots to learn. First thing first, go race it AS IS! See how you like it and go from there. I have a rallyx build going on with my legacy, you should check it out.www.dirtyimpreza.com/forums/showthread.php?t=9447

ya i have decided i want it to be a dedicated race car. i dont have a title and probably wont for awhile so off road only lol. it will be awhile till its a fully built car and do want to use it to move up to stage rally. but im lookin for the things i can do to it for now to make it safer and faster but still legal for the races

Tip of the day........It's the same as a GC Impreza. *minor disclaimers apply*
So, whoever said it's weak "because it's a Legacy" is blowing smoke. It has all the strengths and weaknesses of any other Subaru from the '90s.
I agree, you need to decide on a path for the car. No car is truely all-purpose, especially those built on a budget. This one is certainly no different.
Now, for the Early Legacy Turbo Bonuses(tm).
1. Every piece of suspension (except for the rear sway bar), brakes, transmission, motors, seats, etc., etc., is 100% compatable with a GC/GF/GM Impreza. All the cool stuff bolts on. Now there are minor exceptions, but the only thing major is engine wiring and electrics. See #4 below,
2. It weighs the same as a USDM WRX, but has a much larger back seat. The added wheelbase also makes it more stable on high speed straights. They are invisible to officers, unless your doing something to stand out.
3. Junkyards are full of spare parts. And parts cars can often be found for the price of a tow.
4. The wiring on the turbo model is 98% the same as a JDM EJ20G. This means that the swap to good DOHC heads and "plug and play" programmable ECUs is painlessly easy.
5. You can pick up a normally aspirated EJ22 for a song. Run your first season with it, while rebuilding your EJ22T shortblock for more serious duty.

i think wat he ment by it bein weak was stuff will beak like any off road car and bein this is not like a vw or some small "crapy" car like that it will be more expensive lol. i dont really agree i agree with you all. what were you saying about offecers not seein something? like the longer wheel base? how could that be illegial tho

What I meant was simply that a Legacy doesn't attract attention like a WRX or STI, all other things being equal.
Some consider that a bonus, some desire the attention.
