View Full Version : how do I remove the hill assist "feature"?

my car sucks... thats why its for rally cross, the hill assist or hill stop/hold feature :jack: likes to keep holding at really inconvient times and longer then necessary (1/2 mile going about 50mph and bogging down from a start). the only way I have found to disengage the holding power is to tap the brakes rapidly about 10-15 times and it lets off, which going up hill is difficult to do without the car stalling out, this feature is only nice when loading it on a trailer. I would like to know if there is a sensor I can remove or cut a wire or something else to disable it because it sucks and who ever thought it would be a great idea should be kicked in the shin.
any help would be greatly appreciated

i got on online and searched on how to disable it, all you gotta do is undo a jamnut and remove the cable. simple as that. mine is gone permanently. good riddens to bad rubbish!! that piece of sh*t almost costed me a new motor and brakes.

the i-club write up is basically the exact same, but I dont have boost. looks like i will be cutting a wire or removing the jambnut after work.
Thanks a lot for the help!
they need to stop putting "luxuries" in manual transmission cars, if you want luxury buy an automatic.

I've always been a firm believer in this concept. If you drive a stick... then drive a stick like a man!

my 93 had it and when i took the other one and went from auto to manual i just left it off. all i saw that was different was brake lines and no cable from the clutch to the hill holder piece. so you could save a few onces by removing it lol and running new or "automatic" brake lines

thanks for the info on the automatic lines, i wont be doing that for the weight savings... its a 1.8L w/260kmiles, total ammount invested with 6months insurace and registration is $930, im just hoping it'll last thru the rallyseason and then sell/part/scrap it out depending on the condition.
not to say if i ever come across another sweet $300 deal for another beater car i wont look into that.

For anyone else the pressure hold valve (hill assist) is located on the driver side frame rail and for me to disconnect it I just manually moved the lever thingy to allow me to pop the t-nut attached to the cable from the lever and then just made sure the actuater lever was in the open position. it took me about a half hour because the area was tight and first I was trying to disconnect the cable from the clutch connection on top of the trani, which was a PIA so I found the other end of the cable which was much easier
my Chilton manual states this feature is on every maunal transmission vehicle '80's thru '95

Tried searching on scoobymods, couldn't find anything. Anyone got a link as to disable hillholder? I 'think' my car has it, brakes seem to stick when stopped like no other, hate it...

This feature works great if it's properly adjusted. That said, I disabled mine too. Just disconnect the cable from the unit. All there is to it.

just adjust it. too many peole remove it of **** it up because they dont understand it.
procedurally, you adjust the clutch first, then the hill holder. as the clutch wears, the clutch cable loosens, and the hill holder you adjusts accordingly.
if the hill holder sitcksd, it is too tight.
good luck and have fun. if you want to disable it, just remove the cable from the clutch fork.
an AT master cylinder can be swapped in if you have all the proper lines. otherwise, if you have to make lines, you can stay with the original master cylinder and plumb the lines accordingly.

I didnt know at first, I was hoping someone knew where and how to quickly remove it. I found it and just disconnected the cable from the unit which activates it (much easier on the PHV then on the clutch fork - sliding a t-nut from its perch vs. unbolting the cable from the fork).

If your asking me, I didnt remove anything just disconnected a cable, because I didnt want to re run the brake lines. but if you want it ill let you know when I part the thing out or sell the car (probably november after the rally-x season ends), or if you want to come to denver sometime and remove it and re run the brake lines im fine with that too. it will need a good thourough exterior cleaning because the road gunk from the Mag chloride:jack: they put on the snowy roads here gummed up the moveable parts not allowing them to move/release freely like they should.

I took these after I did the work and they are not the best pictures, but its on the driver side frame rail below the washer res.
pic #2 is the connection on the tranni (firewall to the right, front of vehicle to the left) the yellow colored cable activates the PHV.

Very awesome, lol THANKS!! I'll see when I get home if it's on there.
On my last (& first, lol) Rally-X, it didn't seem to hinder my driving, but speeds didn't exceed 40mph or so, but there were some decent hills. Thanks again guys for helping a n00b!

It should only be working from a complete stop, it will keep the car from rolling back before the car hooks up and takes off if you are headed uphill. mine would not release properly causing my anger/road rage to increase as the motor bogged down trying to overcome the extra friction on the brakes.
It was really nice when you come to a stop because you wouldnt need your foot on the brake (or clutch if in neutral) but in all reality a stupid luxury for "special" people who dont know how to drive a manual.

Ya for sure. I heard of a guy on here somewhere having problems while driving, so anything getting in my way of going full throttle can just get unplugged, lol. Thanks again man.
