DirtyImpreza.com presents DirtyMeet#2 went down on 10/6/07 out on the trails used in the Gorman Ridge Rally in Gorman, CA. The event has held over Saturday and Sunday with the hardcore DI members staying the night and camping in the cold. DM2 was filled with thrills and spills as you’ll see. If you didn’t make it out with drive with us, you missed one crazy weekend. Airborne Subies, waterbar crossings, single lane dirt access roads… it’s all in this video.

yyyeeesss, eagerly downloading... Thanks, Aaron for producing the vid, I haven't watched it yet but I know it's gonna be awesome. Almost as awesome as it was to be there.

Wow, in-car of the F150 tangle...

Take the time to download the Highres version, youtube doesn't do the video justice. Eventually ill be getting all the videos hosted inhouse, for better quality.

Dood if you saw the guys that got out of that truck, you'd think of nothing else. BRO's in the truest sense. I think on of us even explained to them how to put the factory spare on the truck... :shootsself:

I've never heard of NYPD pizza, but am down to check it out. Start a thread in the Southern California forum...

Hey cut WRXDEMON some slack. He's not only about his pet birds, he has some real nice Initial D arcade game videos

Anyway usually I wish I could look at YT and not see the comments cos they piss me off so much, but the 'year in Iraq' comment was such a unanswerable smackdown that I actually enjoyed the comments on this one :D

About the harness though.. harness w/o rollcage is probably not a wise move. We saw that with the rolled rallycross Outback, i.e. if you roll, you want to be able to get down out of the way of the roof. A race harness keeps you pinned in position, and will increase the likelihood of your head being crushed/neck being broken if the roof comes in on you.

That wasn't the point the comment was making.. no idea what he was on about.. but it is a point worth considering.

That looked like fun..

Was it closed when you guys were driving around out there? Insured or "at your own risk"?

So how much carnage didn't we get to see? When does that video come out..?:)There had to be some more flats, bent rims, control arms, ripped off bumper skins, etc jumping the water bars like that. It's hard to believe there were STis on 17s not getting flats and breaking stuff left and right..Those roads flatten many rally tires.

Gorman has some of the roughest stages in fully prepped rally cars that tear things up badly.. Most of those looked like street cars to me, maybe rally x cars. No cages, no helmets, no driving suits. Fun, but sketchy.. Even at a rally x there is a start and stop control to keep things smooth and flowing, and insurance. Devil's advocate here: What if one of the guys rolls it without a cage and gets hurt (insured or not)? That could effect the rallyists that have used those roads for years as well as you guys. Food for thought, especially if you plan on ever rallying at Gorman in the future. The remaining roads are already in jeopardy of being pulled down there.

Or try to coordinate with the CRS folks and get another event together if there were some prepped rally cars at your meet..How many of you are already CRS members? You probably know who to talk to, if so.

You guys could do it if you wanted to. It's also easy to find cheap starter shells to prep..Build a starter car and really kick the crap out of it, then you've got a cage and all the safety gear..

We all have to start somewhere..:)

I think it sounds a lot worse than it was, actually, it wasn't nearly that bad (in terms of the carnage). In fact, I don't think there was a single flat other than Paul's accident with the pickup. Rememeber, these were more like 'fun runs'....no racing, no stopwatches.

But its always good to play devils advocate. ....I was very worried about the whole 'safety' and 'what if' scenarios a few weeks before this meet since my name was kind of all over it and I didn't expect as many people to show up that did.

We made it clear in the official thread that Safety was the #1 issue. (Hoche made a similar post to yours during the planning) For anything 'high speed' (like Louie's jumping scenes) we monitored that section of the road so there were no potential collisions.

At the end of the day, that place is crawling with every kind of vehicle....mostly ATVs and Bikes, but plenty of trucks, etc as well.

While we were there (just before my little river crossing tree tap), two bikers had a head on collision, one guy had to be helicoptered out of there. Accidents happen, and I'm sure they expect that, and even if one of us rolled a car, I'm sure they wouldn't have said...."OH, its a Subaru, I guess we should cancel Gorman Ridge Rally next year."

We were very respectful of the OHV laws and in general, I don't think anyone was going even close to stage rally speeds. I realize it takes 'just one', but if I lived my life like that, I'd drive a Toyota Camry.

Overall, I think we had 30+ Subarus show up over the entire weekend....no speeding tickets or pissed off Rangers, 1 accident (not paul's fault) and no personal injuries....everyone was their own responsible good citizen (as expected)....pretty good weekend :)

Jon,
That's good that you guys emphasized safety, that's very important. Also, "Hoche" is Michel w/ the gti? It's also good that he had some input, if that's who I'm thinking it is. Was he out there too?

There was a gap in the safety factor somewhere, if those two cars were heading opposite directions at the same time on the same road.. What happened there? That was damn lucky. It could have been way worse. Gorman (isn't there a "drive at your own risk" sign?) is an ORV area, so accidents do happen all of the time, but who out of your group was wearing proper safety gear (helmet, suit, harnesses) or running in a caged car? Even the guys on the bikes, quads, buggies, prerunners, or whatever else have some safety gear on (or harness/cage). That's the big difference. Even at a Rally X (way slower) they make you wear a helmet. How long have you been into rally/rally x? You may not know some of the stuff that's changed and why. Lots of litigation. If someone stuffs it into another car outside of your group (or hurts a passenger), don't think for a second that person's atty. can't sue through the "at your own risk" sign. That sort of thing can, does, and will continue to have an adverse effect on getting stage roads. That said, I'm glad you guys had a "clean" run with no pissed off rangers..:)

Don't get me wrong, I love to go out and drive on the dirt/gravel/snow or whatever else, but it's a good idea to close the road (even with buddies/walkie talkies) to know you are the only one driving on it at that time. This sort of thing is a bit of a thorn in my side lately. Have had one friend nearly get nailed by an F350 while "playing" and another one get a ticket going 100+ on a USFS road..The guy that missed the F350 nailed a tree harder than you did, barely missing the rear passenger door (yup, there was a passenger). The other guy got that ticket on a gravel road I've driven for years. Not anymore out there.

That sort of thing will/does get legit rallyists losing roads.. Look at Treeline, RIM, STPR, and MFR in the last couple of years. The STPR road loss is directly related to a similar video (no big air though) of "playing" on the stage roads that was on another site..Just an FYI. Don't think it can't have an effect on the rally, there's already a precedent out there.

Maybe I imagined part of the story told by them or the video, but I think you need to reread the explanation behind Paul's wreck. I do believe that the wreck with the truck occured while the entire group was just on a drive from one section to another, not while having fun. Having multidirection traffic on the roads is normal if they're just commuting.

OK, didn't hear/read that part. Most of those roads are pretty narrow for 2 way car traffic..

Were you down there too?

No I wasn't, I was too busy with that entire work thing to go have fun....damn the luck.

You'd be suprised at how narrow some two way roads are. Back in Virginia we had a bunch of country roads that were about as narrow or narrower than what those looking like in the video and those are all two way.

we were on a 'fun run' wayyyyy out from the usual traffic. I think the whole time we saw a few bikers and 1 or 2 trucks. we drove for at least 10-15 miles before we got to the dirt road/hill climb portion of that drive. I was in low 2nd gear rpms, if not 1st gear, all of the time.

the accident certainly could have been much worse if Paul (or the truck) had been going a lot faster, the fast that it wasn't worse was a testament to the fact that both drivers were being careful.

Barrett.

You are 100% right in all the points you mentioned, and i dont think anyone is going to disagree that going out there does pose a risk to not only us / people out there, but to our sport in general. Jon and I actually discussed the problem with having too many people going out as the interest grew very large about a month before the event. We decided to stop posting about it so that only the core group of members would actually show. We didnt cross promote on any other forums.

Reason being is that we figured we were going to be ambassadors to subarus and rally in general while we were out there. Mishaps would make us look bad and i didnt we didnt want to adversely affect the image of subaru's in the Gorman area. The video looks much worse than what went on out there. Pauls incident with the truck was basically on a "transit" back to some other road WAY away from where the stages were run. Around the waterbar we had numerous people looking out for cars.

I hear what you're saying though. helmets should be a must next time. I had mine, but i plead guilty to the fact that i didnt wear it much. stupid. Not many of the people that come to the "meets" are going to have caged cars.

Perhaps in the future we should promote these excursions more as camping trips with some driving / exploring (since camping was the highlight in my book... so much fun!) since anyone is welcome to drive out in the OHV. The rangers greeted us with similes and said goodbye to us with smiles as well.

Safety really is priority number 1 at ALL our functions.
