So yesterday, I was leaving my buddy's stereo shop, and I put my car in reverse to back out of the parking spot, and I get the clunking and jerking out of the tranny(it felt almost af if I didn't give it enough gas to move the car). I didn't think too much of it until I got out onto the main road. Then I heard a whine almost like he rear end was going out on me(Sounded like a transmission with straight cut gears, only it didn't sound as cool), but it was from the center of the car, not the back. The tranny seems to shift just fine, but the whine is REALLY bad, and now I a get a rolling noise when coming to a stop, like two gears aren't meshed properly. I'm just trying to figure out if it is the Center diff, or is it a gear issue in the tranny...Or could it be BOTH?!?! I think it could be either one, because I have 89K+ miles on the factory tranny and diffs. What do you think? :shootsself:

have you ever changed out your gear(transmission fluid) oil? Or when was the last time you checked its levels?

Changed it about 3 months ago, and check the levels religiously. The oil looks perfect, and the level is good.

Well it looks like things might be a little better than I thought, for once. I found a tranny in Everett, WA for $250. The only thing is that 1st gear is completely gone, but the diff and everything else is good. How hard will it be to replace the broken one with the gear out of MY car, until I can get the stocker rebuilt for the track next year?

have you had the tranny removed and opened? 1st gear is destroyed for sure?

Thats crazy that you just backed out the car and then started having all these problems...

He had the tranny open right after it happened, and just decided to go to the 6spd instead of re-building it. Good news for me. :D :D :D

And I'm sure this wasn't a coincidental break down. I have over 89K miles on the stock 5MT, and I am not easy on my car. The past 40K has been very hard on it, so I am sure I did some damage to it at an earlier date.

You will be stoked on the 6spd. the close gear ratios is awesome compared to the WRX 5spd.

Actually, I decided to stay with the 5MT, instead. I like the gear ratios, as it is perfect for auto-X the way it is now. I also don't have the patience to swap everything out. It turns out that it was the center diff, as it looked like metal confetti in the X-fer case. Should be back on the road tomorrow. Then I can start building the other tranny for next race season!!!
