Hello everyone,
How do I get to the oil pump pick up to clean it?
Can I just take the oil pan off and look in that way?
If I take off my oil pan do I have to replace the oil pan gasket?
Thanks ,
Ted

The pickup is only accessible via removing the pan. Pull all the small bolts out of the pan, then start hitting the pan with a deadblow hammer. The pan will eventually come free from the block. You'll then have to free the pan from the dipstick tube (it just pulls off).
To reinstall the pan, you'll need an anaerobic, oil soluble RTV such as Permatex Ultra Gray. First you'll need to clean the pan and block sealing surfaces VERY VERY WELL. Then you'll need to coat the sealing surface of the pan in RTV. Press the pan up into the block and start a couple of bolts at the corners and snug them gently. Then start all of the bolts. YOU WILL NEED AN INCH-LB TORQUE WRENCH. Now tighten all the bolts to 3.6ftlbs. It's critical that you use a torque wrench so that all the fasteners end end up at the same strain to avoid warping the sealing surface and causing a leak.

I found this on a website... http://www.cimotorsports.net/felpro-oil-pan-gasket-subaru-wrx-sti-ej25.html
Do I need to purchase this as well as the Permatex Ultra Gray?

The stock system uses only the RTV. I've never heard of anyone using a gasket. Good luck with that

why do you think you need to clean your oil pump pickup is the bigger question?

If you haven't already pulled the pan, but you expect to, you should consider replacing it altogether.
Apparently the pick-up tube stem can develop a crack where it meets the flange where the assembly is ultimately bolted to the oil pump. Should this happen, your engine will then suffer from oil starvation and then of course the bearings, rings and so-on will become damaged.
Consider replacing the oil pick-up tube with a new one from Killer B Motorsport: http://www.killerbmotorsport.com/
