Okay about 2 weeks ago I installed a new clutch on my 02 WRX. My background really quick is that Ive been in the automotive field as a smog tech for 2 years now so I know what Im doing to a certain point! Okay back to problem!
Just yesterday after coming home driving "normal" I pulled into my drive way and started to hear and feel a intermittent clunking noise. First scare was I spun a bearing. No cause its intermittent and the engine runs to good and nothing else can lead to a engine failure. I noticed some faint sounding gear whine at idle. NOW this noise ONLY happens at idle. While driving no noise. The engine runs strong, transmission shifts fine no grinding/excessive noise/no slipping. When the noise first started it was loud, I could feel the noise in my left foot on the dead pedal. Could hear it loud and clear when on the driver side underneathe the vehicle.
Now after driving back to my parents house where I had tools and jacks available. Tried to get my dad to hear the noise for a little extra help the noise STOPPED. It would happen so faintly but I knew it was there. After that I let the car cool down to see if it would happen when cold. Nope nothing now. So I proceeded to jack the car on all 4's and spin the wheels to see if I can get it to act up. Nothing not even @ idle like I said the noise would happen. Yes, the AWD system works still. So I drained the oil to look for excessive metal flakes or anything in that nature. Found nothing nothing out of the ordinary. I replaced the oil with the correct amount and used Valvoline synthetic oil and poured the correct amount. Now I did notice a weird spot for a leak on the driver side of the tranny where it looks like a check ball? Not sure I tried to push up on it and nothing happened so I cleaned it and left it be.
Now I have driven the vehicle a little over 20 miles since Ive heard the noise and I cant get it to act up.
So what Im asking for basically is has ANYONE ever heard of this issue or have had this problem? Anyone? Anyone that rallys beats the hell out of their car racing it or anything in that manner? Im stumped! Im not ready to drop the tranny and tear it apart just yet cause it drives so well and the whole mechanical portion of the transmission works 100%. Ive checked for any other leaks in the hydrualic clutch system, engine leaks. Even when I had the tranny out 2 weeks ago there was no leaks nor was the front input shaft loose or abnormal prior to re-installation.
Any suggestion to what i havent checked please let me kno Im lost!
