Yes you can use synthetic. I used to use Mobile in my WRX, it's not the best but it's decent. Get 5 quarts of it. My car normally takes slightly more than 4 to fill it up, I believe the official spec is about 4.2 quarts.

yea 4.2 qts sounds right. I even wrote that with a sharpie on my oil cap that way I don't have to look for the manual and/or second guess myself.

I've used nothing but Mobile1 5w30 on my last 3 cars, and have been very happy with it. It is a very good oil without paying an arm and a leg (royal purple, etc).

So yes, simply... synthetic oil is just fine in your WRX

FWIW there have been a lot of people saying that the recent change in Mobil 1 5w30 has caused problems (burning amazing amounts of oil). I never saw any oil burned during the 3 oil changes (10K miles) I ran it even though I was running the wrong weight (5w30 in the desert... foolish me). It's a bit on the thin side even for a 5w30 so some people use Mobil 1 10w30 instead. You should be just fine with the 5w30, just check your oil level often to make sure. Don't rely on your oil light... it's not so much a "add oil" light as it is a "no oil pressure, please replace engine bits" light.

Royal Purple is not worth the money. If you want an oil that is worth the extra cost go with Amsoil.

Changing your oil at the proper time is more important than the brand to begin with. That and choosing the correct weight for your weather and driving habits. Look for oils that are ILSAC GF-4 and ACEA A3 rated and you should be set. I drive my car like I stole it out in the desert, so I'm running 20w50, and I went with Castrol Syntec for the ILSAC and ACEA ratings.

I couldn't have put it better. Check your oil levels religiously. I do, just about every time i get gas... its worth doing, rather than replacing internals. Agreed that it is more important to change your oil frequently, then spend excessive amounts of money on "ultra-premium" motor oil. Dont think that you're safe buying royal purple or something and driving it hard for 8000 miles. Not a good idea.

You know its funny you mention that, I recently noticed my car burning more oil, I do drive the car rather hard, so it's expected to burn some but it's going through about a quart in 2-3000 miles... I'll have to look into going back to Redline or Amsoil...

I should seriously think about switching to 10w30. Also, a big fan of Mobile 1 synthetic.

Glad to see I am not the only one burning about a quart of oil. I have ran Quaker state Q. and Castrol. so i went back to conventional oil just to see and i burned through that also. I may have to try the Mobile 1. Oh well winter is coming so the driving miles will definately go down again. Snow driving is fun but on thirty below zero days time to stay home haha.

WRX 2.0 and 2.5 = 5 quarts.

1.8, 2.2, 2.5 n/a =4.5 quarts.

Mobile 1 = coolest running oil in my rally car on the 2.0L turbo engine. Hill climb cars get alot of heat in them so I figure it is a good test. I will run Mobile 1 till I get paid to run something else.

Personaly I use Royal Purple. For me it seems to be the best Ive used. Like everyone has already said, CHECK YOUR OIL offten. I check it like I dont have a plug and am worried about how far I can get before I need to "replace engine bits."

When ever you are driving aggressively your engine is more likely to burn or lose oil then when you drive "Normally" so every time I aggressively drive my car I check the oil.

Also every time you get fuel is a great time to check your oil.

ya I switched over to 10w30 full synthetic and noticed a considerable drop in engine noise... (doesnt mater much now:cry::shootsself: damn rednecks) and it seems to burn less oil.

I used to use Mobile1 10W-30 but then my Subaru dealership started carrying Motul 5W-30, and I love it!!!
