Glen Helen I: “Follow the White Rabbit” April 3-4, 2010

Rev it up for an Easter weekend of racing! Why hunt for eggs when you can tear up the dirt? Glen Helen I is going to be another epic weekend of Rally X action. Why? Because the Triple Chase format is back, that’s why. :D For those of you not in the know, the Triple Chase features you against two others on the same course to produce close competition and intense thrills!
There are some big changes in 2010 for Glen Helen. The first and biggest change is that both the GH races this year are going to be 2 day events. Saturday is going to be a practice day (no event timing provided) and Sunday is race day. GH is featuring 6 laps on race day instead of the traditional 4. This means more seat time for you! Entries capped at 45 to ensure everyone gets the 6 laps. The pricing structure has also changed for 2010.
Race Entry Fee’s: $80 Day of / walk up
Practice Day: $10 / lap or $40 for 5 laps
(One free lap for CRS or SCCA members who pre reg + pre pay for race day)
Pre reg is now CLOSED. There are still 13 spots open for walk up registration on the day of the event.
Note: This is an SCCA sanctioned and insured event. As such, you must be an SCCA member to participate. If you are not a member, weekend memberships are available for $5.
For the practice day, cash is king. No checks or Paypal accepted
For the practice day and walk up registrations, cash is king. No checks or Paypal accepted
Prizes
In the event of a sell out, the 1st place winner of each class will be awarded $60 CASH!! Minimum 4 competitors per class.
Sparco (www.sparcousa.com (http://www.sparcousa.com)) will provide a small prize for the winner (or 2nd place if we sell out) for each class. Thanks Sparco!!

ohhh damn its ON!
Not to discourage anyone from joining SCCA, but no, you're not likely to break even with the $5 discounts. You have to join and pay a fee both to the national body and a region. SoCal, you would normally choose between San Diego Region, and California Sports Car Club. I think I paid maybe $70 between the two fees this year. Students get a huge discount though.

SCCA charges $65 for a membership. On top of that, Cal Club (the regional chapter) charges $25, for a total of $90. Kinda pricy, but if you do Auto X and Rally X, it's well worth it.
The SCCA is going to provide insurance and sanction for Glen Helen, Cal City, and the West Coast Champ race @ Lake Elsinore. There may even be a few more events with SCCA.
So that means there are 4-6 races in So Cal alone (don't forget about Nor Cal races). The only venues that are using NASA this year are Ridgecrest and maybe Tombstone (I don't know what's going on over there quite yet).
So weather you join or not is up to you. Just a side note, if you guys are going to join the SCCA, please PM me and I will give you my SCCA member number for the referral program. It's good for $15 off your membership fee.

Yeah. What I was thinking of is youth-oriented. 24 and under. Here's the membership link:

that map looks like the cars could come pretty close to eachother..... :D
dave if you really want to go nuts, call the Glen Helen people and rent out the practice course for the off road trucks. they do test and tune days out there all the time, with graded lanes, jumps and everything. it would be a lot more expensive per person, but it would take rallycrossing to a new level (R4-like racing).

Nah, the spacing worked out OK at the last GH where I did a course like this. I don't see why this would be any different.
As for renting out the short course track, I am all for it. But there seems to be a lack of people who want to jump and race their rally cars side by side. I have been down that road before.

The lanes they use are wide enough to put a dirt curb down the middle - people would be able to run their street cars.

Ah. Well does this mean the classes will be based on SCCA rules, or FRX? I remember the last SCCA race i did in Johnson Valley had me up against modified STI's on Rally tires. Don't exactly remember why.
lminette
01-25-2010, 08:15 AM
Because in SCCA classes Modified is allowed to run rally tires. The classing will still be CRS/FRX classing for these events though. SCCA classing is just silly!!

the last SCCA race at JV co-classed/co-scored since it was also an FRX/CRS event.
We don't typically agree with SCCA's allowing snows in stock and rally in prepared and no accommodation for Street Mod so we exercise our regional prerogative and use CRS classes (as we feel it is more appropriate to our tradition and our area).
No intent to bash SCCA. Carry on. :D

I just checked the FRX website... I couldn't help noticing that i somehow won 1st place last year in SM4. I would like to thank those that did the math on this one!
That being said, I have no plans for that weekend in April. I just might have to come out there.
Math has been re-done and re-checked and should be now correct. Apologies to any and all impacted - never said I was perfect with my arithmetics. :flamed:machinegunleft:

No company makes any product for my car. Everything has to be custom or off of another vehicle. What size struts are the Sti's/wrx? I need inserts that fit a 49 outer diameter strut. The Feal suspension insert looks nice though, might save up for that.
Maybe someone coming to this event could help me out here. I'm buying a piece of UHMW plastic for underbody protection from a plastics house in Anaheim. It's too long for UPS to take and too expensive to truck it.

Oh I forgot to ask. Are these pits paved or are they dirt? Just wondering how I'm going to jack the car up safely if it's dirt, I've never done a RallyX before.
bue car
03-14-2010, 02:48 PM
its all dirt, but its hard as hell in the pits. I used my oem jack there with no issues to change my wheels
rollo
03-14-2010, 04:25 PM
Just take a board to put the jack on.. I use an old cupboard door. The only problem with jacking up on dirt is that it stresses the hell out of the hydraulics just you're dragging the wheels instead of them rolling.
bedheadben
03-14-2010, 09:40 PM
Hmm well I would just use my scissor jack but it doesn't go high enough now that the car's lifted. Maybe I'll bring a wooden block to put under it too. I don't want to break my ****ty Big Red jack.
Rollo's got the right idea..I just found a nice piece of plywood that wood be perfect!
409industries
03-14-2010, 09:57 PM
The dirt won't hurt your floor jack, it just makes it more difficult to move them around. I have used the same jack at rallyx for ~3 years now with no problems.

The dirt won't hurt your floor jack, it just makes it more difficult to move them around. I have used the same jack at rallyx for ~3 years now with no problems.
Hmm.. I've seen the (cheap) HF/Pep Boys type hydraulic jacks break under that specific stress, but YMMV. Either way a board makes the job a lot easier and quicker. I also use a hockey puck on the jack pad (to cushion the diff at the back and the jacking plate at the front).

I blew through a decent Harbor Freight jack on the dirt. I now have a 12x12" piece of diamond plate. It is a real help in the back country of Johnson Valley when you're trying to follow a group of Subies in a Neon and they don't realize you've sunk in the sand and your only way out is to jack up the car, fill in under the tires, then move a foot, then repeat. heh heh. oh yes, good times. . . LOL
In any case, something like that will make your jack more stable. :D Ground is hard enough in the pits where you can get away without it, but it does help.

Hmm, what kind of jack do you have?
Edit: And another noob question, will passengers be allowed?
I have a Craftsman Aluminum floor jack.
Yes passengers are allowed, as Dean said, they must sign a waiver and also wear a helmet while riding. There are usually loaners available at the event.
sigh... i may drop a class in that case lol
Dont be a puss. We need some GC's in the mix. Besides you can always compare yourself to how fast you are against Trent... :pissed:

Just take a board to put the jack on.. I use an old cupboard door. The only problem with jacking up on dirt is that it stresses the hell out of the hydraulics just you're dragging the wheels instead of them rolling.
The first Glen Helen I attended a few years ago we were pitting in the mud. I had a floor jack... While jacking the car up I was talking to someone and drinking my coffee. I looked down to realize that my car did not get lifted. The jack was now about 18" into the ground. Lesson learned. Bring a piece of wood to put the jack on. Home depot will cut you a piece of 3/4 or 1" plywood that will work good and it costs about 5 or 6 bucks.
My jack needed to be pulled out of the ground by my car and a tow strap that a subaru owner lent to me. (some of the jack is still in the ground.... it broke... I left parts of it there on purpose in hopes that someday Dave would run it over and get a flat:muhaha:).
I wish I could make it to this event for both days, but i think i might only be able to show up for half a day.

You can still pre-pay the $80 and reserve your spot. Otherwise it's a first come, first serve walk up basis. I will take reservations during Sat practice.
There are only 10 spots left. It looks like there is a good shot of this thing selling out!! Don't be left out in the cold!

So I have a lot of CRS trophies, including some from 2008 for some reason.
As such, the following people will get a trophy just for showing up on either day:
- Albert Goad
- Andrew Holman
- Loren Bench
- Josh Wild
- Tyler Yoon
- Dave Clark
- Guy Sappington
- Walter Park
- Burney Storms
- Tucker Heiner
- Tyler Turnbull
Yes, I really have eleven CRS trophies sitting in a box in my garage.
The first lot are on the reg list, the second I think are mostly NorCal, although Tyler Turnbull had the awesome blue/black Integra and has come out to GH many times.
If you're on this list and will be there, come and find me - English guy, red street Evo, usually wearing a Ralliart cap or a straw hat (depending on the sun). I'll speak up during the driver's meeting too.
If you're on this list but won't be going to GH, let me know how you'd like to take your trophy off my hands.

Cat-back, replacement air-filter element, and ECU flash. Also, no snow, truck or rally tires.
Gutting your car definitely puts you in Mod - but hey, you can now run snow tires! :D

Just a few quick questions if anybody can help...
To avoid debeeding, what is the preferred tire pressure?
Also, would it be a good idea to remove my fog lights so I don't crack the lenses?
lminette
03-24-2010, 03:54 PM
Preferred tire pressure would be 40+. I wouldn't worry about the fogs. You're stock right? That means you get the cleanest smoothest course.
Pretendingtowork
03-24-2010, 04:44 PM
