Ok i've found the whole thing block and internals...
it has less than 100k miles
its from 1994
its local so no shipping and its less than a grand.
i can probably talk the guy down to 725$
now i dunno a whole lot about the engine only that it seems to be well liked and that it sounds like a deal to me....
ideas>?

good deal.
they are virtually indestructable due to having a fully closed deck block, versus open deck (NA/early USDM WRX), or semi closed deck (USDM STi).
they can handle alot of power, and as you said are very well liked.
i wish i could find one for my car :(

For USDM pre-STi cars, this is the Holy Grail of engine blocks. This block paired with EJ20G heads from the JDM WRX is one of the best combos you can put into a USDM Subaru. The factory 22T heads are very restrictive and most people pull them off in place of the JDM heads, EJ25D heads or the WRX EJ205 heads. The bottom end is VERY solid, but if you swap in a 2.5 crank and rods with Wiseco pistons, you can transform the motor into a 2.35 liter motor. Any 2.5 crank will work, but the EJ257 is your best option obviously.
If you want to learn more than your head could ever handle on these motors & the endless possibilities on build ups, make sure you sign up over at Legacy Central (http://bbs.legacycentral.org). The members there (myself included) are very knowledgeable and there's tons of info to be found there. The only thing we ask is that you make use of the internal search engine before posting up the same question that 30 other people have already asked.

Yep, I like 'em so much I have two! :muhaha: I'd buy a third if I had the ability...then I'd start working on my plans to take over THE WORLD!!!!!!! :machinegunleft:
Sorry, I got a bit carried away there.

My build will consist of the EJ257 crank & rods, the Wiseco pistons (http://www.wiseco.com/Catalogs/SportCompact/SubaruToyota.pdf), blue print & balance internals, EJ20G intake manifold & heads with Delta Cams 272 camshafts, and very likely a TD05-16g turbo (although the turbo choice is not set in stone just yet). My ultimate goal is to put out no less than 325chp. Once that's achieved, I'll be a happy camper.
Keep your eyes open on the classified section on Legacy Central. All types of goodies pop up from time to time, including JDM heads from projects that never moved forward.

The crank and cam sensors will transfer over. The knock sensor should have the same harness connector along with your main wiring harness (if that is all included with your purchase).

no its not and the guy is being very sketchy so i may not go for this anymore, but i am in the market for a closed block or wrx engine etc etc.

I'll bring you back an EJ20T(T) if you want out of a JDM leggy whenever I get stationed back in the states, dude!

Hopefully in a couple of years...if we're lucky. Stateside is usually easy to get after you've been overseas. I will hopefully have a good bit of boneyard goodies packed up and ready for my return..much easier to sell when local pickup is available!

EJ20G (JDM) engines are closed deck, but the USDM 2.0 motors are not.

dropdfocus, are the JDM ej20k's closed deck as well, or is that when they started going open?

01-14-2010, 03:05 PM
EJ20K is from the JDM Impreza WRX & STi and I do believe it is semi-closed deck, but I will double check that info.
EJ20T This is not actually a valid code from Subaru, but is mostly used by enthusiasts and also mechanics to describe the entire line of 2.0 litre turbocharged engines that have been available over time. The practice began with the incorrect designation of the USA-spec turbo, commonly referred to as the EJ22T, and the habit of referring to any turbocharged engine as a "T" began.

Not all of the EJ20Gs are closed deck either.. There's a way to tell by the serial number on the motor but I don't have the glossary or know where to look to do so..

I have seen 3 completely torn apart blocks here and they are all simply stamped "EJ20". The T-designator is on the paperwork that could be called our "title" here in Japan. The "G" block is in all 93-97 GC8's, and the "K" blocks are residing in the 98-01 GC8s...that's just for over here, though. Friend of mine who actually competes quite a bit blew his K block (no compression, died in the middle of a rally) and went to the boneyard and picked up a closed deck out of a RA model, 97 GC8. He used his original cylinder heads, intake, turbo, etc., but the block, in his words, was now "bulletproof".

im still stuck between an N/A and a F/I build, but if i go F/I, i will definately be going closed deck.

i want to build closed deck, but i wont be pushing uber amounts of boooooosssstttt so i think i should be fine with a semi closed deck?

Yeah you'd be fine. EJ205's (USDM WRX motor) can be found for sale all the time on NASIOC for a decent price, especially the short blocks.

Ok here's another question what is the did between short and long blocks
It varies depending on who you are talking to, but in general a "short" block is an incomplete engine. For instance just the block, pistons, crank, etc, but no heads, intake, etc.
A "long" block is a more complete - "ready to run" (or at least a lot closer to ready) engine that includes almost everything that you'd need. Whether it includes all the intake, turbos, etc varies.

From my previous experience at AutoZone:
Bare Block- engine block outfitted only with freeze plugs (no oil pan, pistons, rods, crank, etc.)
Short Block- engine block outfitted with freeze plugs, crankshaft, connecting rods, and pistons (and sometimes an oil pan)
Long Block- engine block outfiitted as a nearly complete unit, minus accessories such as alternator, waterpump, exhaust manifolds, etc. Long blocks are typically sold without an intake manifold, but application specific short blocks will come with an intake manifold.

Short blocks do not include anything but the engine block. No heads, intake, etc.
Gnome
01-15-2010, 02:19 PM
whats too much to pay for a short block, then same question to a long block?
i know it depends on the engine but
lets say a ej20 semi closed
ej22t closed
ej25t semi closed

- short block: $350-1,000

EJ255 WRX & Legacy GT (semi closed)
- short block: $750-1,750
- long block: $1500-$2,500

Looky at what popped up for sale on NASIOC:
EJ22T - http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1913483
EJ255 - http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1910706
EJ257 - http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1895657
This just proves that there are plenty of engines to purchase and use for a swap at a reasonable price, you just have to look for them.

although unabombers write ups are a pretty good read, and taught me quite a bit as well.
