View Full Version : Rocks getting inside vented rotors?

This weekend I did alot of driving on dirt roads, and twice I would get a screeching, metal on metal noise from my brakes. The first time it was from my front left, so I took my wheel off and shook around the rotor, and I could hear the rock. The second time it happened to my front right rotor. It sounds awful, but after about a mile or two, I can hear the rock fly out of my rotor.
Is there any way to prevent this?
Did I damage my rotors or calipers?

It could also be a rock stuck behind your backing plate. I took my front backing plates off, and havent heard anything get stuck in there since.
Your calipers and rotors should be fine. Check to make sure there are no deep grooves in the rotor. You can check the pads if youd like, but the clearance between the pads and the rotor is so small, it would take a tiny rock to get in there

yeah usually when something like this happens (gravel related braking noises) if you're somewhere wide open, and on dirt...
Throw the car in reverse, get it up to a decent pace and slam on the brakes. This usually dislodges stuck rocks. Most of my squealy noises vanish after doing this.

I'll have to remember this.

Its a trick i learned at my first rallyx. A terrible grinding, squealing noise was coming from my front rotor when braking. Someone suggested doing the above method and it worked like a charm!
Just be sure theres no one behind you when you're doing it!
