View Full Version : Tired of hard shifts in the morning

Yes, I realize that allowing my car to properly warm up when it is -5 outside would undoubtedly help this little problem, but I am not always that organized.

So, what can I do to prevent a 'frozen' gearbox in the morning (frozen as in super hard to shift)? I know the gear oil has been changed recently, but I'm not sure what got put in it and my mechanic (aka my husband) is asleep, so I can't ask him. I'm so incredibly helpful :)

This is my first winter with this car, and, seeing as how it lived all of it's life until this summer in Chicago, I thought it would handle the cold better than it does.

Thanks in advance.

move somewhere warmer...

garage your car...

buy an electric warmer that goes into the dipstick hole...

Wrap an electric blanket around your gearbox....

Install a remote car starter....

Really not much you can do to change physics, you just have to find a way to keep the oil warmer.

Id have him double check the level of fluid. But most times its just the crappy part of winter. We dont get below 20 in the AM and I have rougher shifts until the car is up to temp. Couple that with the age of the gearbox its internals are going to be a bit more temperamental .

Well crap. Thanks for the info guys.

(Garage not an option as that is where the Brighton is, waiting for warmer weather for it's new engine :) )
