So... I just called my insurance company asking for a copy of my declarations page and I got bombarded by questions about rally and they were asking some serious questions like how long are the races, how fast do you go, how fast have you had your car up to, how often are these races, etc., which I pretty much just said it depends. This led to them saying that I'm going to be contacted by the underwriter to review my insurance policy. I did my best to explain to them that events are covered by their own insurance, etc., etc., but that didn't get me far. Anybody have some advice for when I have to deal with them?

As far as I know, rally and NASA should not have any effect on my insurance. Is that correct?

ummmm........yeah, you probably shouldn't have mentioned it. They don't tend to l like people racing their cars while under their insurance.

The problem is, its not a closed track....AND, at some point, you'll be 'under the clock' while driving on public roads (ie transits), so, that just spells p-r-o-b-l-e-m-s for insurance companies.

Did you tell them or how did they know about it. I did the same thing this year (I needed a fresh copy of my insurance policy for Prescott) and I just said, 'please send me a copy of my policy with all my limits'. Its not a strange thing to ask for, they just sent it to me, no questions asked. state farm.

i know locally there have been several people that have recived papers from there insurance company after autox's stating that if they do it again and are found out that the insurance company will cancel there policy. We also have a insurance agent that tracks with the club that most of the folks go with and he knows what they do to and with the cars.

mine "is just a spare car that spends most of it's time in the garage"

& I keep copies of my declarations page when I get the policy each year cause I don't want to have to call and ask just in case.... & I don't like to lie but this may be an exception if it comes up

I actually approached my agent before I started racing. I said, here is the car, this is how the racing works. If you want to drop me, drop me now. They didn't drop me.

I scan mine to .pdf when I get it and email it to myself. That way even if I'm in the middle of nowhere I might be able to get to a public library to print it.

mine is a "recreation vehicle" as it sits around most of the time.

on a related note -

there is no way in Calif to register a car as a limited use vehicle is there? unless maybe it is a historical car or something? I have slight smog issues and passing requires an 'extra' payment every two years - it is kinda getting expensive...

I did that too to lower my rates, I have the subaru listed as driven 'occasionally' (defined as less than 5000 miles/year). I can do that because obviously I have the truck as my daily driver. After all the discounts (multi-car, etc) I only pay $37/month on the subaru with all the required limits to rally.

Wow, you actually told them about racing? Expect a cancellation notice in the mail. They don't take too kindly to ANY kind of racing, no matter our perception of risk...

Just out of curiosity. . . doesn't Geiko now have some kind of insurance that covers 'toys' - they advertise covering boats, quads, all sorts of stuff. . . wonder if that would cover these too...

Nope. Not if you're going to drive it on the street. Conversely though, Geico is the best bet for rally cars because it's all automated and does not require an in-person inspection of the car...

Well, I think its less about covering toys and more about covering your vehicle during a timed/competitive event that takes place on public roads.
