I knew it needed some work because the cv was clicking and the boot was ripped and this had been used as an off road car. Well I took off fast one day the the cv gave out on the right side so i knew it was time for a new axle. it was ez untill it was time to take out the roll pin, i will not get into that bout it did get it out.

So when i tried to put the new axle on it did not fit. it was to small to slip back on. Then i remembered something that the seller told me that the transmission had been swapped for a lower gear ratio. I asked the seller about it and he said it was like that when it got it and we have been trying to find the guy who did do it but so far, nothinghttp://norcalsubies.com/forums/images/smilies/frown.gif (and yes i have been doing all this in the rain out side)http://norcalsubies.com/forums/images/smilies/eek.gif

so what i need is to id the transmission my self to get the right size axle,,,, and grrr i dont have the old axle because if the core swap when i got the new one. I took some pics of some numbers and tryed to looked them up but i have found nothing. here are the pics

Same as above...

You can search on that TY752... # on the transmission and this will tell you what you have.

It's just a stock 3.9 FD transmission.

The key is, 1.8 or 2.2 i would assume. if you have a 2.2 engine then they went with 1.8 tranny, idk that's as far as i can safely assume.

Wait a tic...you can tell what tranny is in a car? Where would the number be on the transmission...bell housing?
I have a franken-subie. Previous owner blew the engine drivetrain sky high and put in ebay stuff, and they couldn't tell me what they put in.

using the vin plate, it's possible to tell as well.

general accurate guessing of L cars is: 1.8=3.7 fw and 3.9awd, 2.2=3.9

VIN plate will tell you what is/was supposed to be there.

The only way to ID a trans is to take the number or open it up. Number is much easier.

Well, from what i saw there are two different numbers for that year, the 2.2 and the 1.8 which is what seams to be on your car right now...i really don't know if that would make the axels different...

wow ok so i took the axle back and told them that i think they gave me the wrong one. So i traded it in ( the new one cost me 30 more bucks for the brand) and guess what, it just slid right on.

Now i just got off the phone with the old owner and he told me that he swapped out the transmission and put one in from a 95 brighton (Maybe some one could tell me what a brighton is I think its a Legacy) He told me he did it to makes the gear ratio lower. And it dose have alot of power for a 2.2 non turbo,,, it still used the same axles.

The final drive in your car should be a 4.11 if it came from a '95 Brighton. That's a base, bare bones Impreza. No power windows, tach, etc. Some had AC. Great swap candidates due to the light weight. Most of the L's had PW/PDL/power mirrors and a tach..as well as AC standard.

The fit issue with the axle was most likely due to the parts guys selling you one from a 2wd, not AWD Impreza. They were made from '93-95.

Hope this helps.

The final drive in your car should be a 4.11 The guy who did it said its the same "final drive" so it works.

Brighton... i still dont understand. my Subaur is an L and it dont have power windows so dose that make it a Brighton? He also used the shocks and struts off of the Brighton. Why would he have done that? Please more info on Brighton. Thank you
