My 02 Impreza Outback Sport has developed a drivetrain whine at about 40mph and up (3rd 4th and 5th gears) :( . I hear when I accelerate and decelerate. It sometimes goes away for a for a while until driving conditions change. It sounds as if it is coming from the front half of the car. This developed while driving back from Antioch to SoCal.

What the hell is wrong with my car? Is it the tranny? I'm mechanically inclined but I know nothing about the AWD drivetrain :shootsself: . It shifts fine and the noise isn't horrid, but it is new and not right.

Anyone know where to start looking for problems? I really want to go to the Gorman meet and be able to make it back home.

Help.

Do you have play in one of your front wheels when you shake them?

I'll check on that. But I would think not because there are no clunks and it drives well.

But I'll check it out.

Did you check to make sure you have enough oil in the transmission. The stick over by where the turbo should be on the side of the transmission.

Also how many miles do you have on the fluid if it is really dirty or broken down I can see it being a problem.

Factory recommends replacing the trans fluid every 30,000 miles more often if you drive aggressively.

I checked the trans fluid last month, right when I bought the car. It was at proper level and very clean. Maybe it is dirty at the bottom on the trans? Maybe old fluid foams or loses viscosity while driving?

I will check the trans fluid again. What fluid do I use and how much?

drain a little oil, this will tell you if the oil is dirty or if there are any metal flakes at the bottom of the tranny.

You wanna use 75w90 gear oil, I prefer mobile 1

I run the "Problem Gearbox" fluid that you can buy at your local Subaru Dealer.

But everyone runs something diffrent in there box. and this conversation could go on for months. Find something that shifts the way you like and stick with it.

I replaced the trans fluid and the sound is less noticable. Sometimes I hear the noise but it is relatively faint. It may just be noise from high milage wear on the trans and driveline (127,XXX miles).

I would love to sell this wagon and get a lower milage WRX.

Thanks for all of your input guys.
