I have 1995 Impreza 2.2L with automatic transmission.
What is the newest engine I could possible put in? Would it be possible to put in Engine (2.5L), w/turbo, exc. STI?

I'd like to turbo and to get rid of the automatic transmission (put in manual =)). What should I consider. and what could be my possible options?
Thank you.

PS: I'd like to replace the engine, mine has 150K on it.

I'd imagine the newest you can put in is the 2007 (maybe '08??) drivetrain+motor.

If you're going to swap, even an EJ205 would be a good candidate, as they can be found fairly easily. If you can find either an RS transmission or a WRX transmission, either would work. I'd imagine that you would also have to find the corresponding rear differential as well. The RS has a final drive ratio of 4.11 and the WRX has 3.54 (or 3.90?) I've never been able to figure out which the manual transmission has.
If you want the cheapest route, you could swap in an EJ251 from a 2.5RS, along with the drivetrain.

Check here (http://www.eastcoastswappers.com/rates.php)
for labor pricing and swap pricing

Others here will be able to fill in the huge gaps that I left in my information haha.

Mine has 235,000 and is running like a champ.

I would go with any of the turbo engines you can get cheep. You are going to need a new E.C.U. to control the new engine and the new "Manual" Transmission.

Depending on how crazy you want to go with the new engine.

The Stock E.C.U. will work on a stock ish setup. But it might be worth looking into a Standalone E.C.U. Haltech and Autronic both make E.C.U.'s that will plug and play with the new engines. then you can get the max horsepower for your setup. They both read off the O2 sensor to get you better fuel econimy then the older Standalone E.C.U.'s

(I think it is about time someone makes a page about what is needed to swap in a new engine to the older subaru's)

Thanks guys. You made my day. I was afraid it would be only possible to swap an older engine.

^ subarus are like legos. pretty much you can mix and match whatever you want.

you can swap motors from the 80s into an impreza if you REALLY wanted to. every motor has its strengths and weaknesses do some research into what you want. I have always been a fan of the USDM STi swap for the TQ. but the JDM WRX motors put down way better numbers and are 2.0ls, but need higher octane gas (96 iirc)

I want to go very crazy on my impreza (After driving impreza I cannot drive anything else, completely fell in love with this car).
So far, I'm planning on:
Engine 2002-2005 JDM STI Turbo
ECU
Transmission
Differentials
Clutch

^ sounds like a solid choice.

I have never been in a GC with a newer jdm swap. but i have been in a few GCs with early jdm swaps or USDM swaps and man they are QUICK!

I remember hearing that someone in canada did a back to back dyno with a usdm sti and a jdm sti.

usdm 2.5l was like 225whp and the jdm 2.0l was like 280whp. stock.
