Well i have owned my 1998 Impreza 2.2l for about 4 months now and im thinking its about time i start to change the current setup thats on it.

Currently it has the following:

Engine:
-Group N engine/trans mounts
-Welded 2 1/4 catback with 18in resonator and 40 series flowmaster muffler
-Air silencer delete

Handling:
-KYB-AGX front struts
-KYB-AGX rear struts
-Eibach lowering springs on the front to level out the car and stiffen front
-17mm WRX rear sway
-STi hard tophats

Exterior/Protection:
16" WRX wheels with Nitrogen filled Dunlop All-Seasons
Front Skid plate
Rear diff plate
Rally Armor Mud flaps
Roof rack delete
STi replica scoop (BIG)

What I want to do for now is get some more ground clearance, handling, and better traction. I plan on doing an engine/trans swap after i return from deployment in july 2011.

I was wondering what springs i should go with or maybe a complete different strut/spring combo. The struts that are on it feel great and i notice a HUGE difference when i played with the different dampening settings. I was thinking about throwing the stock springs on or finding some gravel/dirt springs.

When it comes to tires/wheels I want to get something that will last but is great for getting out of mud, snow, or whatever else i get into. But my n/a 2.2l might not like a real aggressive tire :(

For engine performance I dont want to do anything that will be a waste when it comes time to do the swap. What i was thinking is maybe a catback that i can still use after the swap???

Thanks for any comments or suggestions,

tony

What strut / spring combo you go with is somewhat dictated by what your budget is. How much money can you spend? KYB's are always a good bet for struts. You have a variety of spring options with those as well.

Tires. Indeed the 2.2L will not like something that is really wide. Id stay somewhere in the 195 range max.

What swap are you planning on doing? Turbo i would assume. if so you may still be able to use your existing catback, but might have to get something made to adapt the downpipe / midpipe to what you have further down the line.

Keep us posted!

Well i could get some really nice struts if i wait till after the new year into February, but for now i was looking for springs because the struts i have are really nice (trying to get a hold of previous owner to find out exactly what they are)

For tires i have 205 all seasons on right now but i want something with a more aggresive bite to them and treads that clear away easily, and i want to get rid of my steelies :D

And yes im going to do a turbo/5mt swap, im thinking the 2.0l

Ground control coilover conversion for springs.
I've also heard king springs are good but I've only found lowering springs so idk.
And hankook ipike winters for tires (just put mine on today and I love them)
As for the exhaust, just go 2.25-2.5" from the cat pipe back and put a nice 18" resonator in there. Cheap and sounds great. Looks stealthy too.

Hope this helps!

I will look into those springs, and the tires :) As for the exhaust just keep the stock muffler too? I was thinking about just doing the exhaust up myself with a resonator just because its cheap and i have a tube bender i can use :D

what size wheel/tires are you using for the hankooks?

RS MN
12-03-2009, 10:40 PM
i have no muffler after the resonator.
its not as loud as you'd expect with the 18" resonator. it just sounds awesome.
but if it does get overly loud for ya, just throw a glasspack in there somewhere as well.

as for the tires i have 205/55/R16 (stock size) on a spare set of flat black RS 6 spokes.

If the struts are red, they are probably the KYB AGX...that's what I'm guessing. :)

What I was thinking for the exhaust was a 18"-20" glasspack and then I have a 2 1/2" I/O Borla XR-1 muffler sitting in the garage somewhere that I was going to use on my Sentra a while back.

For the tires i might go for the Ventus R

I am starting to think the same thing just because they are the only red adjustable gas struts that i have found for my car so far...lol

Ok here WE GO!

Im turning this into my project log. There wont be any "HUGE" changes but when that time comes I will have the log started :D

Ok first off: today I am going to do some maintenance and pop the wheels off so i can see what exactly I have for struts :) Im also going to get the exhaust ready to be removed and maybe get to a muffler shop this weekend and get some rumble out of her :P

Second thing: I have been talking to the future wife and decided that when i get back from afgan I am going to either get a 2.5RS or a bugeye WRX :D. Then she will get this one :) haha! So im going to keep the auto trans but maybe do a 2.5l swap or just do a n/a build with the stock 2.2l

RS MN

ya for this im still debating doing the 2.5 swap...i want it to have bawls...but nothing to crazy for my girls future DD, but something that will be torquey enough for me to have fun :D

lol i still gotta get her to drive it the way it is...christmas break is going to be loads of fun!

RS MN

2.5 w/ 4EAT is really fun IMO,
sure its no WRX, but its got balls.

i highly recommend the EJ25

OK here we go with updates! Today I was doing a lil bit of checking and replacing (oil change, air filter, PCV, and so on). Good news is that I DO have KYB AGX Struts :D and they are pink :D:D:D. Not so good news is i got to see for the first time my single port headers...I was like WTF!? when I saw how...well puny they are, so that is the next item to be replaced! Found a UEL single port header on rs25 :D. Also there is some nasty oil build up on the drivers side head...so that kinda sucks. Here are some pics:

And here is the under skid pic:

These are the UEL headers I am looking at getting:
http://i887.photobucket.com/albums/ac77/bone_1113/IMG_1125.jpg

I noticed a big difference in the cars performance after i did the lil tuneup, cant wait to get rid of the stock exhaust and get my stock springs back in! I should have all the stuff and get it done on christmas break so stay tuned!

For springs I would suggest the Tein G-Tech Dirt Master, stock height but stiffer spring rates. Primitive has them for $290. Or find a set of stock STi springs w/ classic legacy rear strut tops (my current setup), there should be a few sets for sale around the Denver area.
If you aren't on awdpirates.net (http://dirtyimpreza.com/forums/awdpirates.net) a Denver based site, get on there for some cheap local Subaru parts.

bone_1113
12-13-2009, 11:47 AM
I cant remember what my tops are off of but they are stiffer more rugged than the stock ones. I was looking into the Tein springs, just didnt know of anyone that has them so i was just going to throw my stock springs on for now so i can get my ride height back.

I will hit you up when i upgrade! Found out that there are a couple other parts on my car that i didnt know about...or forgot about when i first bought the car...lol

The top hats are the:
Group-N "STi" heavy duty mounts

also have:
Group-N engine and trany mounts

I remember the engine mounts because my buddy told me that i would feel more vibration from the engine with them...i dont mind at all! :P

put them on NASIOC and RS25.
theyll get snapped up pretty quick if youve got them on there for cheap.

i was just going to throw my stock springs on for now so i can get my ride height back.
I just want to warn you about doing this. Stock springs with AGX struts didn't work well for me. The stock springs were much too soft and blew two struts last winter. If you are going to take your car off road/ rally-x I would not recommend stock springs with AGx's

bone_1113
12-14-2009, 11:00 AM
Hmm...damn

Thanks for the warning! I would hate for that to happen...I guess I will order new springs then :)

^I have a GF, compared to his GM, more weight in my rear end might have caused both rear struts to fail in the 6 months that I had the stock springs on new AGX's.

In my opinion the stock OBS springs are too soft, the 98-01 RS has spring rates of 157/149, I believe the OBS rear springs are slightly stiffer in the rear to handle a payload. The STi springs (224/194) work perfect for what I use my car for, an excellent all around spring. I drive them hard on auto-x/track days and they handle very well. I soften my swaybars, turn down the AGX's and they are great for rally-x and fun winter driving. My .02¢

RS MN
12-14-2009, 01:57 PM
the extra weight makes sense.
and how much drop did the STi springs give you?
i was thinking of going STi springs with the JR lift, but for me getting OBS springs is easier and cheaper.

ahowell
12-14-2009, 05:02 PM
The STi springs dropped mine about 1/2"

RS MN
12-14-2009, 07:29 PM
huh, less than i thought.

ahowell
12-15-2009, 07:39 AM
They don't drop the car very much because the GD chassis is a couple hundred pounds heavier than any classic Impreza chassis. Even though the STi springs are nearly and inch shorter unsprung the stiffer rates doesn't give much of a drop.

RS MN
12-15-2009, 10:15 AM
huh thats pretty good,
when i have some moneys i may need to invest in some.

bone_1113
12-15-2009, 10:49 AM
hmmm...i might still put the stock springs on and just "take it easy" until i get some other springs

bone_1113
12-17-2009, 02:57 PM
Ok, so while i wait for the exhaust and all that...I decided that im going to work on some body stuff...First thing is I want to comepletely remove the roof rack. The only problem is that it leaves me with holes all over and on the sides there is a big gap were the cross bar attachment was :( does anyone know of a piece i can buy to go there? Also I am going to do a RS front conversion and i ordered this:

:D:D:D
http://i887.photobucket.com/albums/ac77/bone_1113/SUBARU_IMPREZA_STI8_LARGE_BONNET_SC.jpg

When i get everything installed I am going to get it repainted all black :D

Oh...and one last thing, can I put a RS rear bumper on as well??? I just dont like the wagon bumper...

RS MN
12-17-2009, 03:01 PM
you need to do the bumper beam as well as bumper cover for front so i guess it would be the same for rear.

bone_1113
12-17-2009, 03:04 PM
Ya I have been looking all over, i just like the RS or non wagon rear bumper just because it doesnt have that lil rubber crap on top...not like im going to be putting groceries or anything in there :P

ohh...edit! The RS and the L uses the same rear bumper support so i guess i just need the bumper :D

After I am done with the engine swap and body my car will be a 2.5RSLSTi...lol (STi because of the scoop :P)

*Updates*

Ok so first off I finally found out what i have for a spring setup...I first though that i had a full Eibach Pro lowering Springs on my car, but then after talking to the previous owner he told me that he just put the front springs on to level out the car and stiffen up the front end...I works great for me i just need some JR lift spacers to get some height back.

I went in today and had a 2 1/4in with 18in resonator and 40 seriers muffler catback welded in :headbang:...it sounds great but i cant wait to hear it with my headers when i get them. Right now its not lound which is nice (i do a lot of long 850mi road trips) and it has that nice below 3,500RPM rumble:eek:

dude, found the ramparts. took the road all the way to woodland park. great drive although i dont think i would want to screw around too much on that road, too close to cliffs. although it was a run trip. thanks for the directions

Rampart is a nice drive... You should really take it all the way up to the 67 interchange by castle rock... basically when you get to woodland park on ramoart you go straight or turn right instead of left... Pm me if you want a map of it... Cliffs are everywhere in colorado... Its part of the game... Ive put myself in some pretty hairy situatioms on the mountains but nothing staying calm couldnt control...

I can vouch for this...

LOL i will have to take this trip after i get back (and after i have WORKING struts) I have a friend that wants to go on the drive too so it would be fun. Ya that first +/- 45min would be pretty rowdy faster then like 35. ill have to record my trip down choke cherry canyon when i go home and post it for you guys. Its a big chunk of land that the oil field guys have to take care of, so it makes it really fun to go fast on.

"...not true, i just love the rush!" i hear you there, i used to love hitting choke at night while it was raining. Music blasting, sideways around dust-covered corners... "rush" is the right word there

Here are some install pics finally! Up first was the Hella Super Tones

Had a slight issue with space...and the optional wiring harness...ya the directions are a joke, just had to try some stuff out and figured it out by myself. Also had to trim my grill out...just to fit them between the grill and the AC core...oh well looks kickazz!
