right now I have stock STI wheels with 225-45-17s but woudl liek a taller tire, I am %99.9 sure I can do a 225-50-17 without any issues, but what about the 225-55-17s from the outback? I liek the tire selection and the height, but I am worried it will rub.

Mostly round town driving but I am a big fan of beating it on dirt/gravel and some sandy fire roads..

The 225/55's will give you 0.88" taller sidewall with 1.77" taller in diameter.

The 225/50's will give you 0.44" taller sidewall with 0.89" taller in diameter.

The bigger tires would be good for the added clearance but thats just about an inch taller. So unless you have at least 1.125" clearance between your curent tires and struts I'd say stick with the 225/50's just to avoid any problems.
