I have a 1998 Subaru Impreza L Wagon, has the 2.2l and its auto :(. I want to get a turbo under the hood and swap in a manual trans. Would i be better off gettin turbo parts off a wrx/sti or doing a complete swap? money isnt a huge factor but saving always helps...any suggestions are appreciated.
Thanks,
Tony

Complete swap unless you want to be replacing the engine in the not too distant future. The N/A 2.2 and 2.5L don't last long under boost especially if you drive with any hint of aggression. For it to be reliable you really need to crack the black and put in lower compression pistons and such. By the time it's all said and done you'd be much better off buying a used 2.0L/2.5L Turbo engine and go that route.

If money is no matter than difinitely go with a swap. That is by far the most reliable way to turbo an NA suby. But, a swap could often run you upwards of 4 or 5k. So if you wanted to keep it cheaper then a bolt on turbo kit wouldn't be too bad on a 2.2. I built a turbo kit for my old Impreza for under a grand and it ran really well and was faster than alot of WRX's. I actually sold it with a 3.5 psi spring in the EWG and it beat my 02' WRX at the drag strip. Lol...

A complete swap will be much cleaner and reliable. A friend of mine put wrx headers/up-pipe/turbo on his stock motor, 1.8l L wagon, running 16psi on e85, stock ecu, with a Power FC for 8 months now, no problems. But under the hood it looks terrible and everyday he is afraid of it blowing up.
If you have money to play with, you can buy a 02-04 wrx engine and trans for 3k-5k, but labor for a shop to do the swap will kill your wallet.

Swap labor is not bad if you do it yourself and have Iwire merger the harnesses for $750.

One more vote to swap you will just over boost and blow the nt block any way

Awsome, thanks guys. Ya I will be doing all the labor that i can, the only thing i was concerned about was the mounts and stuff and if i should go 2.0 or 2.5. Im not looking for super speed just something more that what i have that can still tear stuff up :)

Motor mounts and all that ish are identical. The mechanical portion is straight drop in as you'll just need a turbo cross member. The wiring is the hard thing but Iwire on RS 25 will merge your harnesses for $750.

ok cool, and what about the manual trans? are are they all interchangeable? or do i need to get a specific trans for the engine? because if i can ill just swap in the 5speed now and wait to get my alternate vehicle done to do the full swap.

You will probably need a manual trans cross member, I don't think the auto one will work, the driveshafts might be different lengths also. But any 5-speed will bolt in with no problem. You also need to make sure the trans and the rear diff have the same ratio when you swap them, or you will snap your center diff before you get out of the driveway.

+1 for Iwire, he did my wiring on my coupe and will be doing the wiring on my wagon as well..

swap it!!
you will need: complete engine with matching wiring and tranny, tanny Xmember, turbo Xmember, pedal assembly, turbo front sway, matching drivetrain, shifter assembly and bushing, patience and tools. if you want to keep your dash, but you'll have to send your wiring to Iwire. keeners real good. try millenium auto on nasioc for complete swap packages.
