View Full Version : Not-so-dirty '07 Satin White STi: Back from the cagebuilder!
AWD>FWD

I have a 2007 Satin White Pearl STi that I bought with 32 miles on the clock and have been working on making her better little by little. Don't judge the low ride height and cleanliness, she has seen dirt and will have a dirt/snow setup (stock springs, giant mudflaps, knobbies). She is under the knife right now getting a lot of the listed modifications installed (DIY with help of course).

I will update with pictures as I continue to work on the car (my FMIC kit is still 3 weeks out). I still need to find some extended length exhaust hangers but other than that I have everything to put her back on the road.
And before you observant guys go getting on my case about putting a big FMIC on a car with the VF43 but my next plans are to focus more on the suspension and the little bits. We'll see, maybe this car will end up with an ATP stock location ball-bearing GT30r and built engine with meth down the road but for now I'm just working on having a legit stage 2+ setup.

A little update, I ordered up a set of 4 Kartboy extended length exhaust hangers to get the muffler tip away from the bumper and my buddy who is a Subaru tech convinced me to remove my air pump while we have the car apart so I ordered Cosworth air pump delete plugs. I am waiting on my FMIC kit and TGV-less housings right now other than those, I am picking up the JDM TGV-less housings locally on Friday and the FMIC kit should be here in about 3 weeks now.
Then the Nissan needs a little final nut-and-bolting, a new electric fan controller, and an ecu tune for the turbo, injectors, and cams. It's running on a rough SR base map with the injectors scaled down but I wouldn't drive it like this. It's gonna be a fun little car, 300+whp in under 3,000lbs with a full interior.

The more I keep doing to this car, the more of a street queen/tarmac car she is becoming. I have been tossing around the idea of picking up an older Legacy sedan for DD/snow/rally status. A sport sedan sounds like a lot of fun and I have a 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee limited to trade off/sell.

Anyways, the car is back up and running. UPS came today and dropped off two sets of 1 step colder iridium plugs for me, so I have that and a compression test to do.
I think I'm gonna have Tim Bailey tune this car, so I have to buy an AP if I'm going to do that. I've had some stuff come up in my life pretty unexpectedly and so that money now needs to go elsewhere so the car is put on hold for a little bit. Bummer, I don't really feel like giving the state more of my money...

Wow, one of the few I've personally seen that chose to still utilize the stock BPV. Most go off wasting money on an aftermarket one when the stock holds up just fine. BTW, the car looks great!

02-26-2010, 09:14 AM
Yeah my old car had a TurboXS 100% recirculating valve on it because I was running 24psi but since I'm only running 20psi on the VF43 I decided to keep it. Plus the small holding studs on the base of the TXS stripped out (cheap aluminum, other than that it was a great valve that I got as a freebie with my TXS FMIC kit on that car). I'm not sure what I'm gonna run on this car when it "grows up", whatever it is will be 100% recirculating. My stock BPV is loud as hell reverberating off the hard pipes, I don't need the noise makers. :)

Good! BOV's are for nimrod losers. BPV's are the only thing that should be used on a Subaru (or most cars for that matter). I'm using a TurboXS BPV only because I can rotate the housing so that the connecting hose runs over top of my throttle body. The stock BPV will not work because the T/B linkage is on that same side and it hits.

Well, my Nissan runs a Biltz DD 100% atmosphere valve but I changed the ECU to an Apexi Power FC with a MAP sensor so it still knows what's going on.

Why thank ya, I tried for a matte textured look (get a good base on it then start spraying LOTS of thin layers from far away, this paint gets a little globby and makes a nice texture if sprayed thin enough).
And my Whiteline goodies showed up today. Should make for a big improvement over stock since I already have my front and rear sway bars and endlinks and sticky tires installed.

Soo yesterday I decided I wanted to clean my car just a little bit.
Started washing with Meguiars gold at about 3pm, that usually takes me about an hour and fifteen minuts once a week. Then I pulled my car in the garage, got it up on jackstands, pulled off the BBS and started washing them with soapy water. Next I started on the body with the Mother's clay bar, after that I moved onto Meguiar's finishing compound, and finally Meguiars gold carnuba + liquid wax. When I looked down it was 2am and I still have to finish the wheels (using watered down quick detailer and then moving on to wax) and I still have to clean the rear Brembos. But the good news is that nearly 100% of my paint imperfections have come out and it looks better than the day I got it (minus the rock chips but they aren't bad at all).
You guys probably think I'm nuts haha.

She's got plenty in store over the next few months. It's kinda nice having a car that doesn't get looked at like it's fast. It allows you to mess with people all the time! You're STI is hot, but people expect it to be exactly what it is...factory fast. I personally like the '06/'07 the best out of the USDM series.

03-06-2010, 11:16 AM
Yeah, I'm always on the lookout for a nice cheaper Subaru to use as a daily driver. Maybe like a 93-98 Impreza L AWD because everything bolts on anyway..
I need to sell my Jeep first though, that will free up about 3,500 to play with although I think I will just use that towards my engine build... which I should be starting to collect parts for this month or next.
Thanks for the kind words! I know, I think the 06-07 is best, too although I am biased. When I first bought my 06 WRX TR I was on the verge of buying an 05 WRX Limited but just couldn't do it. When the 06 got wrecked (not my fault) the 08s were on lots I couldn't think of anything I really wanted more than an 07 STi, short of a 911 turbo and that for sure wasn't happening.

So tonight TJ and Ashley (02 WRX fully EJ207 swapped with a 6MT, Brembos, and BBS), Tim (05 WRB WRX), Stacey, Katie (04 red WRX wagon), and Ryan (modded cummins Dodge) came over to help with my compression and leakdown test, haha. Many good dirty/that's what she said jokes were enjoyed by all and by the end of the night we figured out that my engine is still in good shape with about 135psi across the board and leakdown ranging from 7 to 15psi.
So now I am having to chase down a possible poor ECU tune, an air pump sensor, or a blown VF43, still better than a full rebuild. My APS exhaust manifold needs to come out, the header wrap is falling apart and I'm thinking it MIGHT be cracked although I hope not..
TJ working on my car, he was laughing at one of many dirty/"that's what she said" jokes...

Had a pretty interesting experience driving over the pass on my way home. I was winding through the corners (60mph speed limit) at about 80mph when I round a corner and see a state trooper sitting on the side of the road, obviously catching me on radar. I hit the brakes, slowing to about 65 mph. As I pass him, I expect to see him flip on his overhead lights but instead I saw him holding the up the "okay" sign up to his windshield, like yeah... that's a reasonable rate to be travelling. hahahaha.

So since I bought this car I have been keeping an eye open for wheels that I like better than the OEM gold BBS, which I love but the fitment sucks (8" wide with a +53 offset), if they were 9" with a +48 offset I would love them. Most of the wheels I have been looking at have either been overdone or were extremely expensive (nearly $3,500 for a set without tires), so the OEM wheels stayed.
The other day on IWSTi I spotted a member posting about his new wheels. Looking more in depth, I liked what I saw. The wheels are gold Enkei RC-T4 in 18x9.5" +45, pretty good fitment for a Subaru although going that wide you're either going to poke out of the fenders or be extremely close to the struts, this wheelset being the latter which is more desirable to me since I hate the look of Subarus with improperly offset wheels (anything more aggressive that +45). These wheels are in Enkei's "motorsports" line, next to their gravel wheels and have been proven in Japanese endurance road racing. These wheels are really light and strong, but the best part? They list for $405 per wheel, very reasonable for this size and quality. I called my buddy who works at Firestone, I know he can get Enkei wheels like the RPFs but they can't get them, the only place I have seen them is through Rallispec or Gruppe-S.

So I figured out recently what my car has been doing...
3 issues:
1. Loose PCV system lines, causing rough idle Solution: buy and install missing clamps.
2. Excessive blow-by, too much oil recirculating into the intake. Solution: install a catch can, dunno why I didn't do that earlier...
3. Blown turbo seals on my VF43. The three issues together under certain conditions will give me huge clouds of blue smoke on startup, not cool.
So my solution is to tear the car apart.:twisted::eyebrows::cuckoo:
I need to get the intercooler and charge piping off to clean out, I might as well add a blow-through MAF to my FMIC setup while I'm there. My APS header needs to come off to get fully unwrapped (although it's been doing a mighty fine job of unwrapping itself) so I figure I will have it JetCoated or similarly treated while it's out. Since my turbo is now an effective paperweight I might as well just go with an ATP GT3582 with a Tial 44mm external wastegate to replace it. I will most likely have the EWG dump tube recirculated into the 4" catless downpipe and have that JetCoated as well. Since my car only has 750cc injectors I need to add more fuel to the fire, I figure an Aquamist HSF-6 methanol injection kit with upgraded AN fittings/lines from Howerton Engineering will get the job done.
hehehe...

After having some issues with the Full-Race sales staff, I think I am going to pick up a Tomei unequal length exhaust manifold and up-pipe. That's right, my car is going to get its boxer rumble back!! :D
AWD>FWD
06-17-2010, 09:47 AM
Hmm, I figured out Tomei's dirty little secret...
I was looking around and noticed that the Maddad, Titek, GP Moto, Prosport, and Tomei exhaust manifolds looked identical. After looking around a little further I found out that they follow the exact same design, the only difference between them is the writing on the badge plaque. They are even rumored to all be made in the same factory in Taiwan, I really wouldn't doubt it.
So, with that being said, I think I may be looking into the Grimmspeed port n polished/ceramic coated stock cast manifold ends with their crosspipe. The only gripe with this setup is the flex section in the crosspipe, I always worry about flex sections causing exhaust leaks...

And guess what I get to do now?!? Tear it all back out!
Got to the tuner yesterday and found out compression on #4 was very low (70psi), so it's time for my engine build...
At the very least I'm doing slightly overbore JE/CP pistons, ACL race bearings, and rods, balanced out for a 7,500rpm redline. I really would like to do my port n polish work on my head with oversize valves and lumpy cams, I'm also looking into upgrade cranks, so I'll be crunching numbers until that happens hahaha.
Stay tuned, most likely Maxwell Power Services will be building the engine.
But on the bright side, even with the cracked ringland (I'm running an AOS and the car is running fine) the car made 355whp and 370wtq at 21psi and pulls great all the way to 7k. Now let's just see what this 3076 can do given bigger heads and 8,500rpm to play with. ;)
And, unfortunately, yes, that means this car is officially retired from the dirt. Buuuut, it opens up a need for a daily driver, which would definitely be allowed to play. Stay tuned for that, as well.

Alright, it's been a while since I updated this thread. Not much has happened with this car, but I am currently saving up for the engine build. I am still planning on having Maxwell Power Services build the engine, but think I might go full-out and start building this car into a track/show car (don't worry, it will stay stock bodied) now that I have a new daily driver. Keep an eye out for the Anghellica's next evolution, coming Spring/Summer 2011.
For now, my new (to me) Outback's journal should be much more eventful. You can find that here: http://www.dirtyimpreza.com/forums/showthread.php?t=19020

I had a WRB 06 WRX TR before this STi, it had a TD06 20g (before stock location BB turbos were readily available in the states), FMIC, cryo-treated v5 STi type RA gears, etc etc. Unfortunately I was hit head on in a road rage related accident, so I parted the car out and sold it to Mager, who with Rallitek's sponsorship, built the car back up as a full stage rally car.
I believe in using my cars, especially since that incident (I had only put 2,000 miles on the 20g, just one road course day). I honestly believe that driving on the street is riskier than driving on-track, where everyone is paying attention. I will still drive the STi on the streets, but I have a feeling after I break in the new engine I will be seeking out every on-track event between Pacific/PGP and Portland International Raceways that I can afford to make it to. I have recently bought a '98 Legacy Outback that will take the brunt of inattentive drivers (door dings and whatnot) and the boring miles from commuting so the STi doesn't have to be subjected to them...

I plan on getting a set of 04 STi struts (to be revalved by Feal for gravel/snow using STi coil springs) with some spacers to maintain a decent ride height, installing my 06 WRX/RA tranny for the gearing upgrade, a front skidplate, and more forward facing lighting... eventually...

It sure has been a long time since I have updated this journal...
Last Spring, when I was still commuting in my STi, I had the turbocharger seals fail, followed shortly by the engine's ringlands cracking and the struts blowing. I decided that I wanted to do a full road-course track car overhaul on this thing, so I parked it and started putting away my pennies.
Between then and now I have been researching, planning, saving, and spending. I have been accumulating my parts pile and working on relationships with local engine/cage builders, and it seems as though it's finally starting to come together... :)

I've always liked checking in on your build journal. Even though the car isn't typical to what we normally see on DI, it still follows function over form, which is the important thing. You're not "moar low!" for the sake of going low, but for performance on the track. I think any Subaru fan with any common sense can respect that. The car looks great, I'd love to see it in action sometime. Be sure to post some videos once it gets rollin.

right now im unsure if i want to keep moving toward road racing (more friends that do it, can do it more often lots of road courses) or a rally car theme (rallyx is far, and any gravel roads i can mess around on are even farther). but this build sure makes me keep swinging my opinion toward RR.
but i need a 6 speed asap reguardless...
edit: also just noticed i posted in this thread before lol. times sure have changed from then. i wont even touch a stock location turbo anymore.
