Yes you can however reliabilty will be an issue. If you want to swap out the pistons for lower compression ones and add forged rods then It should be pretty reliable.

Yes, I did it. I have a 95LX (EJ22E, 4EAT).
There is alot that you need to consider when you boost the car. the main thing is what do you expect to get from it?
I had a TD04 (stock wrx turbo) on my car for about 3 months. when it got hot outside i ran into unexpected, and impossible to diagnose issues. however i have thought about going turbo again.
I ran 5.5psi on a completely stock long block. the 2.2ls have a lower compression ratio than the RSs so it is possible to run slightly more boost or the same amount of boost more reliably than a 2.5l.
so lets start with what you want from this and we can go from there.

well the issue with turbos is that you need to spool them up. so the low end isnt where the gains are really seen. you will see only a very slight increase in low end power and there should be a decent difference after say 3-3.5krpms.
daily driving should be fine as long as you do things correctly. meaning gauges, some sort of em/fuel control and some tuning. you can get by w/o em or fuel management but i wouldnt recommend it. also with an EM and some tuning you can pick up alot of low end tq. When I dynoed my car while turbo i had around 142wtq on a dyno dynamics at 2500rpms. this is pretty much dead on for a stock 02-05 wrx on the same dyno. the 4eat helps to generate alot of tq on the low end.
what year is your 2.2l? you can piece together a decent kit for fairly cheap, other wise you can buy a pre-made kit for slightly more but save you alot of time.

well you could go the route of the AVO kit.
If you want to piece it together yourself you will be looking for alot of used parts. mainly you will need a custom uppipe (or legacy turbo x-member, wrx headers/uppipe) downpipe, turbo (td04 probably), Intercooler, IC piping, oil/coolant send and returns, BOV, gauges, EM, ect... there are alot of parts required. I pieced my kit together for about $1500 for pretty much everything. but i got some REALLY good deals from some friends.

topic stealer....
What do you think would be best for a rally car, 2.2l with the avo turbo kit or a wrx motor, or sti motor.
Taking all things into account as well as the most bang for the buck.

the best answer for a rally car ever... :-)
I am a huge fan of the 2.0L I think they perform better when you are sucking air though a 34mm restrictor.
the 2.5L looses a lot of power band.
The 2.2 turbo heads barley flow any air so I am anti.

well if you piece your own kit together i would say that the 2.2l would be the cheapest. but if you are going to by a flat out kit it tends to be expensive and you should just do the 2.0l swap. get something JDM they have much better hp/tq out of the box then the usdm 2.0l. the STi is a great swap but it is so expensive.
I rode in a sti swapped gc rally car. OMG it was awesome. but a huge investment.

would it just be best to buy a Ej20t engine, trans, ecu, and rearend from a 1999 rs, the whole swap and then convert my 2.2l auto to 2.0l turbo 5-speed the thing is im worried about, can it be done easy like a b16 swap in a honda or is it a huge job and has somone here done it that could help me find what i need

ej20t = a WRX... 02 or newer
to do a whole manual swap you basicly would need a doner car... maybe find a wrecked wrx!?
It can be done, but its not AS easy as a Honda swap... Honda motors can be picked up by hand :D and ripped out in less than 30 minutes...

2.0 wrx motor or 2.0 sti motor, or are they the same motor just different turbos?

2.0 wrx motor or 2.0 sti motor, or are they the same motor just different turbos?
USDM 04+ STI = ej25t (dohc) 300hp
USDM 02+ WRX = ej20t (dohc) 225hp
USDM 97+ 2.5rs = ej25 (could be Sohc or Dohc depending on year) 165hp
USDM 92-94 TURBO LEGACY = ej22t (sohc) ~180hp ??? Not certain on power...
Does this help? I dont want to get into JDM motors, cause it sounds to me that he is looking for a cheap option... getting a JDM motor and trans would not be cheap, better to just find a wrecked one of these cars...

USDM 02+ WRX = ej20t (dohc) 225hp
I think this is the engine I want?......this would normaly come with a somewhat small turbo right? which I could switch out for something bigger right?
plus a 02+ engine or wrecked car will be cheaper.

Actually its USDM 02-05 WRX = ej20t and USDM 06+ wrx = ej255 (dohc) 225hp

well theres alittle more to it than just 20t and 25t. there is a third number there like the STi is a EJ257.
anyway if you plan on running the 99RS rear end you will need to swap the pinion (?) gear in the differential so that they final drives match up. other wise you will put the center diff in a real crunch.
the best way to do a swap is to get the whole parts car. that way you have everything you need. it makes it much easier. and you dont have to worry bout joe smoe tearing everything out of the car and the ups guy dropping it off the back of the truck.
