So after a good deal of money spent and an entire interior removed I decided to turn my 6 month old car into a dirt machine! My first step was to raise the car back up for ground clearance then it was off to the local IKEA for some flexible cutting boards! I finished the front's last night and I'm still debating whether or not the rears are necessary. Here are just a couple quick shots i took at 12 am last night before going to bed.

Very cool idea! i love the Yaris and always thought it would be really cool to build a rally car out of one.
RallyArmor Universal mudflaps are only $16 for all 4. Why go through the pain of having to deal with IKEA idiots and not support a small company that supports all of us?

Good point! I bought the flaps from Ikea because it was local, cheap and I just wanted to do a mock up. Definitely going to invest in some RA flaps when I save up a little pocket cash though.
A. Much better quality
B. Like you mentioned, supporting Rally Armor! :headbang:

I was browsing online last night for some inspiration and came across a couple photos of Yarii being used for rally! Once the rear flaps are on I'll take a few action shots of my own. I'm just psyched that people are continuing to use the Yaris, at least somewhere in the world :bored:

As the rain pounded the asphalt outside I was warm and toasty in my garage finishing up my DIY mudflaps. I think they came out well, I just need to stop by the local Lowes once more and pick up a can of black plastic spray paint. Here's a quick photo series of how everything went down for the rears. Lots of adjusting and re-adjusting of course :shootsself:

Yes! I was considering some lights up front maybe mounted to the grill. Seems to me like there's adequate room for them. I don't have the money for any huge changes atm so I'm just trying to think of small improvements that won't cost too much money until I get my finances back in check.

yay! i'm not the only toyota with ikea flaps anymore! looks good with all 4 corners having flaps instead of just the front. so far i've only had to replace 1 ikea flap in the year that i've had them and it was due to below zero temps and hitting it to knock the snow off. all the others were fine since i left them alone.
definitely diggin the car though, always cool in my book to see someone using something thats different than the majority.

I feel the same way! Awesome car yourself I always liked the older Celicas in fact there's an all trac that's a generation older than yours down the street from my house that appears to have been abandoned and I'm considering my options :) I enjoy driving FWD on the dirt though, the challenge makes it a little more fun IMO :headbang:

I like it! Ikea mudflaps are quite cost effective, smart move, although I'd used some plastic or metal washers on the outside of the bolt. That'll stregthen the overall attachment and prevent the flap from popping off the bolt. Just a suggestion :)

You might want to put some large diamater washers on those to help keep them from pulling through the fasteners. That is the most common reason for mud flap premature demise. Looking good though!! :)

So a quick update on the status of the Yaris. I evacuated my AC system and began removing lines which resulted in a quick call to poison control after getting blasted in the face with oil . I wasn't aware that refrigerants can sometimes be mixed with a harmless, and rather bad tasting, oil. Anyways, after some panic, and some reassurance from poison control, I went back to work. I removed the front bumper and eliminated the condenser unit exposing the radiator and finished removing the fragile AC lines. What I'm left with is just the compressor that needs to be removed and getting a smaller belt to fit the remaining pulleys. I'm hoping that getting rid of a pulley will make a noticeable difference in performance. All in all, removing the entire AC system should shave off another 20 pounds from the front end
My other project that I've been working on is removing the passenger airbag. Although completely disconnected and ready to come out, there's plastic piping obstructing it and it may come down to some serious cutting to remove that sucker. Because no other Yaris owner has ever removed the passenger airbag, I'm estimating that by it's size it should remove another 15 to 20 pounds (that's me thinking optimistically ;))
So as it stands, I'm actively looking for someone with a saws-all or just some proper tools to help cut my Yaris apart from the inside out. I'll be sure to update again with photos once the passenger airbag and AC pump are removed along with the official weigh in of both. Thanks for reading!

In fact I'm running a set of Tein Sport Compact coilovers with ride height and dampening adjustment. They were rather inexpensive and so far I'm the only Yaris owner in the US to be using them. Although they're a street suspension they have a soft spring rate and with some ride height adjustment they're more than decent for a beginner like myself. I've also installed a Cusco 19mm rear sway bar and a Cusco Type 2 front underbrace. I didn't install a thicker front sway bar because I can only see it making things worse in terms of under steer. Good to hear from my fellow 1NZFE brotha!

So after a long delay here's where the car now stands. First, I ended up removing my dashboard then pulling out the passenger airbag and random AC ducts netting another 15 pounds of weight savings. Second, before I was laid off from my last job at Bank of America :machinegunleft: I saved up some cash and picked up a few goodies.
1. Kosei K1-TS 15x7 rims (13 pounds each)
2. Bridgestone RE-11 tires 205/50/15
3. Sparco Corsa Seat
4. Sparco Aluminum Side Mounts
5. Recaro Tab Sliders (Supposedly FIA Legal) :kyle:
6. Custom seat mounting bracket
7. Autopower 5 Point Harness
In the end I had a nice car and barely enough money to pay my bills for the current month. At this point I literally sold everything else I owned on craiglist to stay afloat. Now a few months later my bedroom is a bit more spacious then before, my fingernails have almost completely disappeared and I have a new job! :-o Let project Rally Egg commence! :rally-driver:

By weighing all the material I have removed so far I can estimate that the car is sitting a hair over the 2000 pound mark. I look at my heavy glass windows every day and ponder but I just can't get rid of them, I drive this car wayy too much :?.
For those of you looking at where the harnesses are mounted like I did when I first bolted them in ; yes they are safe. In fact I made a note of the angle and contacted Autopower to just make sure everything was up to par. The car is sitting low for now due to its Autocross debut this year where it did pretty well however I've got the urge to get this little thing dirty so I'll be re-adjusting the ride height and throwing back on the all season tires for the next upcoming Rally-X event nearby.
Questions, comments or concerns are now welcome and again, sorry for leaving you all hanging for so long. ;)

Just got an email from Hot Bits saying they carry rear spring perches for the Yaris that will fit any 60mm spring. Rear springs were a dilemna I've had with the Yaris since day one and it seems like every coilover kit on the market had their own unique dimensions that wouldn't work with any other :?. I'm thinking about getting a set of Swifts since they're amazing quality, non-progressive and come in all lengths and sizes. Anyone else have a suggestion on what to use? SO HAPPY! :jack:

Thank you! ;-) There are a lot of people that see a great novice rally car platform in the yaris(me included) due to how affordable and reliable they are brand new and their extremely low curb weight even fully loaded. Before I started going to Solo 2 events the Yaris was an enigma but now theres a good size group that goes every month here in the Cal Club region. One thing that's really motivating me to move forward with this project is the possibility that it will open up a path for other car owners that had never previously been considered. I would love to see people arriving in groves of Yarii, Fits, Aveo's and now even Mazda 2's to have some fun and break the stereotype that an economy car can't still kick a little @$$ in the dirt. There's a whole new realm of affordable fwd competition out there just waiting to be discovered :headbang:

Ford just announced the Fiesta R2 package which is a great platform but no longer affordable!
Even though I always considered it, the Yaris looks like a good platform but after seeing your photos I would look more into the rear suspension. It seems it doesn't have much travel?

Unfortunately, since the rear springs that come with the Tein Sport Compact kit are designed to lower the ride height, they fail to really give the rear a good amount of clearance/travel. My solution to this is replacing the rear spring perches with ones from Hot Bits that can fit a 60mm spring and getting rid of them all together ;-). As for the struts, although they do have a little less travel than stock they are WAY thicker and look like they can handle a lot more abuse than the stock ones could. Also, with the dampening turned down the rebound and compression feels almost like stock. I'm thinking that with the right springs and reduced dampening they should be fine, at least for Rally-X. I still have my stock shocks however so if it goes downhill I can swap those back in and figure something else out :flamed. If this wasn't my daily driver I'd order the gravel kit made by Hot Bits.

Originally the car was for Auto-X where it was a blast but now I'm prepping it for Rally-X in 2011  The 2zz swap is something I have thought about for a long time and it's more money than what I can afford at the moment but in the future it's stil a definite possibility!

I love this Yaris! :) Get this car caged and on stage!
I don't care what Autopower told you bro, that shoulder harness angle is not safe for anything other than Autocross / Rallycross, at all. You are risking spinal compression if you have a big frontal impact. Spinal compression = paralization or death. The lap belt routing looks good other than the webbing should go through the three bar adjuster, a third time. Give me a call if you have any questions. I welcome question on things like this.
Another thought on safety of this car, as it appears to be a daily driver. Please put the B Pillar plastic back onto the B pillar. If you have a big side impact, or even a small one really, and your head hits that raw metal B Pillar...it could be very bad and for no real reason. That piece of plastic weighs like 1/2 pound max, but could save your life. Why risk it?
All the best,
Charles

I love this Yaris! :) Get this car caged and on stage!
I don't care what Autopower told you bro, that shoulder harness angle is not safe for anything other than Autocross / Rallycross, at all. You are risking spinal compression if you have a big frontal impact. Spinal compression = paralization or death. The lap belt routing looks good other than the webbing should go through the three bar adjuster, a third time. Give me a call if you have any questions. I welcome question on things like this.

I hear ya, a cage is definitely going to be the next big investment. I've always had the seat belt angle in the back of my mind so it will be changed in due time. I'm actually looking to cover parts of the car like the B Pillar with foam however when I'm strapped in my head doesn't even come close to touching anything inside the car besides the back of the seat so I think I'll be okay for now should an accident occur. Having said that, safety is number 1 and I've always kept that in mind so I appreciate your comment ;)

If it was my car, I would use the stock seatbelt for street duty and seriously pad that B Pillar asap, even put stock plastic back.
Please, look at some crash videos on Youtube my friend. You quickly learn that during a car crash your head, your seat back, your B Pillar, can move a very surprising amount.

Calling a few places about a harness bar atm and checking out padding for the B Pillar. A buddy of mine has roll cage padding that I might be able to grab for cheap if I could make it work. You've got me worried now but that's a good thing

yeah, gotta be careful with harnesses. i imagine if you could find someone with a tube bender and if you have enough imagination to design up a harness bar yourself, you could get exactly what you want/need for about the price of what an ebay cheapie would be. not really sure what the aftermarket support is like for the yaris on parts like that, but like safedrives said, i'd just rock the stock seatbelt while you're driving around regular. as you know, socal drivers love to rear end people like no tomorrow, so save your back from getting snapped. i can't wait to see your car in person. i've always been interested in seeing what the yaris can do, especially since that one best motoring video i saw a while back that had the yashio factory supercharged vitz running their touge course. wasn't the fastest car they had, but they sure looked amazed and like the drivers enjoyed the hell out of driving that car.

agreed^^^^^
think of the angle of the belt, the lower it attaches, the more your body turns into a snail during high impact

Definitely workin on it but I don't think it's as severe as you guys think. I'll take a profile shot and show you but the angle is just over the 45 degree range. The belts are attached to the rear seatbelt mounts not to the underside of the seat.
UPDATE:
I have a pair of 60mm/9 inch/ 280lb metric coilover springs from Swift coming in along with new adjustable rear spring perches from Hot Bits. I'm hoping to have the rear suspension (minus the shocks) replaced by next weekend then I'll go ahead and post some before/after pics. I've been playing with the dampening settings and when it's all the way down the car literally floats like a boat so I'm thinking my shocks should suffice, at least as a temporary solution. Of all the street coilover kits available for the Yaris the Tein kit is reportedly the softest .

Stand alone harness bars are also not the answer my friend. A basic 4 point roll bar with harness bar is the minimum that I reccomend if using a 4+ point race harness. From the research I have done, I learned that a stand alone harness bar is not a safe choice, as such we have never sold that product type at safedrives.com.

Quick Update: Disconnected the front sway bar for improved travel and it definitely takes some getting used to. Having said that, with a rear torsion type axle I'm worried that I'll still be getting the infamous tripod effect at some point.

I agree with Charles, I'd just use the stock seat belt until you get the full cage done
Also the "tripod effect" can be fun
Dave Mirra's car had a little of that going on at the US RallyCross this past weekend haha

Perches and springs came in so I went ahead and installed them today. Didn't think the jump (3k to 5k) in spring rate would be so noticeable but it's definitely much stiffer in the rear than it was before. My ride height also went up substantially even with the new Hot Bits spring perches set to allow maximum free length. I can't tell if the car is now taller than stock or if it's just the smaller tires that make it look that way, guess I'll have to wait for the girlfriend to come home with her Yaris so I can compare. I'll go ahead and take some shots in a bit ;)

more pix ... That harness/seat combo will put you in wheel chair.
You ONLY have 2 choices :
1. full cage with race seat and 5 or 6 point
-or-
2. a reclining/collapsing/stock seat with a 3 point schroth type harness. mounted to the rear passanger UPPER anchor.

The tripod effect is great for rallycross (for FWD), it'll allow the rear end to rotate which is what you want.
any updates?

Indeed! Front mudflaps are on and rear flaps are on the way next. Also, getting ready to cut off the super restrictive muffler on my car. The rest of the exhaust system is already straight through it's only the axleback that stops airflow and diverts it through a maze of piping. I'll post some photos and maybe a video of the new exhaust when it's done.

Of course! I'll try and be at the first Rally-X this year and we're talking about maybe a Cal City trip as well. My only set back is money, for me Auto-X only costs 15 bucks whereas as Rally-x is more around 50. Not quite sure why that is...

The harness angle was the first thing i noticed too. IIRC the ideal amount of angle going backwards to the harness bar is between 0 and 10 degrees. I'll have to double check on that but it was in the Sparco installation booklet.
Overall, it looks like you're car is really coming together a s fun little racer! Nice job.

Because in Auto X can cram in 300 cars in a day no problem. You don't need a water truck and tractor for tarmac. Those items are NOT cheap to rent. Then you have to figure in the down time associated with the water truck and tractor. When you add it all up, you can get about 50 guys (max) 6 runs each at a Rally X.
I also call BS on the $15 entry fee for So Cal Auto X. ;)

There's definitely no autox around here for $15. All the events i've done with CSCC or Team Blew were minimum $50.
I'd like to find an inexpensive autox venue.... so where's the cheap ones at?

Last year with a membership and a student discount I was only paying $15 to enter Cal Clubs Solo 2 events at Autoclub Speedway and El Toro. Mind you that was just for Sunday and 3 runs. Then of course we would end up getting fun runs at the end for free if we volunteered to do cleanup duty. Under 24 ftw?
