I'm looking at getting a set of studded tries for this winter, and found these on CL.

225/60? that's a lot of sidewall....my pirelli's were 225's, but I think the sidewall was either 40 or 45%. They didn't rub, but it was close at full lock. There's a chance they'll rub...how much? dunno.

Also, for a snow tire (even if they're studded) 225 is really wide, which is the opposite of what you want for a mud/snow/rain tire. I don't think you'll be happy with the performance. imo.

Thanks, I knew that sounded pretty wide for a snow tire. Were your pirelli's 16's or 17's, there are some others on reno's CL from a forrester that i might check out.

So, i looked up the size of my current winter tire 205/55/16, how much bigger could i possibly go w/o lifting the car?

27'' od tires are pushing it....and about the largest you can go with stock wheel offset. I am running a 27.8'' od but it is 1'' narrower at the contact patch so it clears the rear spring perch. The rear spring perch is where you will have all of your problems, surprisingly the front will clear just fine....if you don't care about your stock plastic wheel liners.

my 225's were on 17" rims. I also had Dunop Winter sport 3D's (snow tires) on 17's as well...they were stock width and a little narrower sidewall....195/50 (I think...maybe 195/55?)

the dunlops were GREAT btw...at 17", they're a V rated snow tire. greet traction, and great dry weather handling.
