View Full Version : swap questions
So, I have a friend with an 05 STi, he's short on cash, I am an opportunistic vulture, so I threw something out, and he's open to my suggestion...
We're negotiating swapping his 6 speed into my 07 WRX wagon. I would get everything under the car, except for the engine (ALMOST had that thrown in the deal).
What issues will we run into suspension wise? As my WRX parts will be going back onto his STi. Thinking rear top hats may be an issue.

If you're talking everything under the car, the only issues that I'm thinking of would be the strut housing tabs and axle lengths being different between the wagon and sedan. Otherwise, you're just talking about him having a 5-speed, R160, and basically doing a 5x100 downgrade. He must really be desperate for cash.
Are you sure you want to deal with having Brembos? Being limited to 17s and having a desire to get dirty frequently would suck IMO.
That's been one of my reservations, guess I'd have to order some wheels specifically for dirt to clear them.
Also looking to save time and swap steering controls. If they would be compatible.

I know the '04 STi steering rack is a direct swap for mine if I shorten the tie-rods, so I would think yours would interchange with the '05 STi's, given that the '05-'07s are supposed to be the same.
As far as finding 17s for off-road, good luck. I suppose finding something cheap and durable enough wouldn't be that bad, but you would be unable to ever mount rally tires. The '06/'07 WRX 4-pots (Gr N) are great for that reason. The 15" Racelines that I have will clear them, as will the TD Pro Rally 1s.
5x114.3 bbs' are easy to come buy. powder coat them & get some tires to tear up in the dirt would be my main option.
really trying to talk him into letting me put 05 wrx brakes on his sti and putting the 4/2 pots on my wife's wagon, he's not going for it though

Again, you won't be able to run rally tires with them, though. If you're just looking to run all-seasons or snows, those would be a good choice, however. You're right about those '05-'07 BBS; they are really cheap if you look around.
Personally, I like having the ability to run rally tires, so 15s were a no-brainer for me.

me too. we'll see how it goes. he may just sell the car stock in stead of swapping.
time will tell.
