I checked out the old PDE "rally downpipe" on their site, and am interested in a similar piece. Anyone know of anything like it available?
Well, Cobb, Invidia, Helix, and a bunch of other companies make downpipes for Subarus. Just get one from a decent brand and you'll be fine. You don't have to spend a ton either. I got a new Invidia DP on the NASIOC classifieds for $185, and it's as good as any.

I already have a Cobb TBE. What I am interested in is a downpipe that is built to have more clearance for off-road use. The old PDE downpipe looks to have been built specifically for that reason. Plus, it said in the description that it had protective shields.

The PDE was designed to be used for "offroading" hence the extra clearance and shields. DC Sports also makes one that has great clearance but no shield.
There are many different styles of DP. Blocked wastegate, bellmouth, and divorced wastegate.
I know for sure the DC Sports one is a blocked wastegate but not 100% about PDE.
The 3 different ones do vary in performance. Bellmouth tends to have a lot of boost spiking. Blocked wastegate has spiking also but not nearly as much as the bellmouth. Divorced has the least amount of spiking but is also the most expensive types of DP's.

You can take your DP to a good exhaust shop, and have them press the body of it to an oval shape. This gains you a fair bit of clearance w/o reducing the volume of air that it can flow.

I appreciate the info. I've never seen oval tubing or mufflers, so I'll keep that in mind now.
If anyone has any info on the clearance differences of various aftermarket downpipes, I'm looking at the TurboXS piece now, as the catted Cobb is going to the STi.

I have an Invidia my self and we cut and removed about an inch of pipe out of the downward portion of the downpipe and it made a world of difference. The DP used to be the lowest part of the car, now its up out of harms way. Any good exhaust shop should be able to do this for you and since you already have a good downpipe in which you could do this to, it would seem to be the cheapest option for you as well. The nice thing about this is things fit differently from car to car so with some careful measuring and planning you can most likely get it tucked up higher this way then one premade since you would be custom fitting it to your particular car. It worked for me :)

Right on, man. Can't say I ever thought about having it cut to tuck closer to the body, but that sounds pretty effective.
