ok i know this topic has been done to death but i still haven't found a clear answer lol. Should i use the damn Scotty's cocktail or not lol. Can someone here give me some clear answers? Preferably from a first person perspective! not hear say or the 2 stupid nabisco :machinegunleft: threads. yes im having some rough shifting issues (kinda notchy feeling when putting it into gear) and a strange sound my mechanic is having a hard time figuring out. He recommends changing the oil out first to see if that resolves the issue. Now back to the cocktail? What to do

I haven't used said cocktail myself. I have stuck with the tried and true stock subaru gear oil and have had no problems. I would take your mechanics advice and change it, but there is no real reason to spend the extra cash on said cocktail. Changing the old oil should help remove any of the crud causing problems, but won't necessarily fix it unless you were to actually flush the tranny.

From what I've seen:
Uncle Scotty's Cocktail: No
Subaru Extra-S: Best you can get for a DD, but doesn't hold up to racing.
Motul 300: Best if you race, but the most expensive.

ok i dont race it, i dont have money for 5 gallons of extra s since thats the only way you can purchase it and is motul good for dd? how much is it and what weight?
:shootsself: lol

If you don't race then don't bother spending the extra cash, it will only end up costing more with no gains.

5qt of Motul is almost the same cost as the bucket of Extra-S. I'd recommend the Extra-S. You'll have enough for 4 changes since it doesn't go bad. If you can't afford it up front, find another subie guy to split the cost with.

Savenfiddy, I've had great success with Redline MTL and Lightweight shock proof. Original problem was downshifting to 1st from second. ok at 20 mph when I got the car with 30,000 on it. After some autocross abuse, I couldn't downshift unless I was doing 5mph. I took the tranny apart expecting to see something needing replaced and I was pleasantly shocked to see what looked like brand new everything, no wear. I cleaned everything up, reassembled the tranny and filled it with the MTL and shock proof and to my surprise, I was able to downshift from second to first at 25 mph.

Yep, I've used nothing but Redline in my tranny and diffs since I first changed the oil in them, and have had no trouble. I know there is mixed opinion on Redline in the Subie community though.
we use extra-s in our racecar. some places will re-sell it by the quart (our dealership does, I buy it by the drum though do to frequency of changes)

I would recommend AMSOIL Severe Gear, ( https://www.amsoil.com/a/synthetic-gear-oil (https://www.amsoil.com/a/synthetic-gear-oil)) 12.75/qt retail and 9.85/qt wholesale. Outperforms redline and motul (and any other oil on the market), although I was a big fan of redline in the past, It is too expensive for not enough protection. Redline performs well in a couple tests, but not enough to make up for overall performance, and not to mention the failure of a couple tests. ( Study of Automotive Gear Lubes Tests (http://www.amsoil.com/lit/g2457.pdf) ). Motul is a decent performer, got high scores on another test, but again, too expensive for not enough protection.

From what I've seen and heard, the Extra S is only really recommended for the 6-speeds. For the 5-speeds, the Motul is my choice. Expensive is relative when we're talking Subaru transmissions.

The study does have a heck of a lot of detail, but bear in mind that it was performed by AMSOIL (the company) and as such cannot be expected to tell any other story than it does.
I'm not saying that the findings are inaccurate though. And it makes for interesting reading.

Most of the tests that amsoil shows were done by third party companies. I have even contacted Mobil 1 about these tests and their "nothing outperforms mobil 1's advertising" in a very nice and simple e-mail, lets just say the e-mail I got back wasn't very nice and they were avoiding the question...

so i used the scottys cocktail and i gotta say it is ultra sick. it fixed all the issues i was having ( the whirlling sound and notchy gears ) my mechanics both worked at subaru for 8 to 10 years and both agreed that the mixture shouldn't cause any problems. Even though im still going to change out the oil again after using the cocktail 10k miles to the extra s. My guy said his shop will foot the bill for the 5 gal drum from subaru :headbang:. i will post any new developments once i change it again with pics if anything is found on the magnetic plug. thanks for all the input :waving:
