View Full Version : Under the dash...what else to remove?

so I have all the airbags out and most of the wireing/electronics associated.

I've cut off a lot of the brackets I don't need anymore.

I want to keep the stock blower/vent for defrosting the windshield and some kind of ventilation coming out the center vents...but what else can get pulled? (yes, the radio is out)

anything HEAVY that I won't use anymore? I don't exactly know where/how to remove the heater core...can I even remove that w/o pulling out the engine?

AC should probably come out too...again, what's under the dash related to AC?

Heater core is usually a case of pulling out the entire dash, it's right at the back behind everything. You shouldn't need to remove the engine though?! Under the dash related to A/C.. not much, I don't think. All the action happens in the engine bay. Doesn't seem like there's much else you can pull other than the core.

[edit: disclaimer, i have never pulled apart a WRX dash and hey, maybe there are some big weights or something in there]

the heater core / ac system / blower / servos / duct are all one unit. unless you take it out and gut it (similar to Carl??) then just leave it in and take the a/c off the motor only.

you need the heater core for defrost, yes?

that's what I thought, but wanted to double check.

and yes, w/o AC, I would assume you need some kind of temp control to make the defrost work.

gracias...wanted to make sure I'm not leaving anything under there. once I get the dash back on, I don't feel like taking it off agian for a while.

Most of the crap back there is plastic and related to the HVAC stuff. I don't think there is a whole lot of weight savings to be had. But yes, take out everything that is AC related including the hard lines that go through the firewall, etc.

The only thing from the AC system under there is the evaporator which is what the two AC tubes connect to at the firewall. To take that out you'd have to remove the heater core (you'll lose a little bit of coolant). It's pretty minimal weight savings. The heater core/blower combo though is a bit monstrous. You could always get the mini to replace all of that and save some decent poundage and open up a lot of room (for what, that's up to you).

I'm gonna guess 'too much' and 'too much work'...but I'll ask again, where do you get that and how much? (including extra hoses and crap)

Sorry, I was digging. The one above I believe is this one: http://www.southernrods.com/categories/heating-and-cooling/heaters/products/product-867.html

I could have swore summit sold one but I can't find it anymore.

Not sure about hoses, but I'm sure there's quite a few options out there.

You could also go this route: http://www.wholesalemarine.com/pc/R-P-MPSC-818/230002/12+Volt+Products/Marine+Pro+Hair+Dryer+12V.html?gclid=CKmL_bveh5ECF SBeagod6laaFQ

It's cheap.

If you have not done this yet you can take out that huge blanket of fire proofing material that is in between the dash and firewall. I just took mine off and it was at least 5-7 pounds!!!!

LOL at the hairdryer!

Yeah that carpeting and all the sound deadening that you can find. The stuff really adds up.

You can remove the plastic a/c box from between the heater core and blower, open it up,remove the guts and then put the plastic piece back in. Make sure to seals the holes of course.
