Well, I suppose its about time to post up about the soon to be Open 4WD 2005 "RLLYSTI"
I guess I should begin at the begining; new, clean, bumper in one piece  ...

http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f56/subyspawn/Subaru/New/STi0005.jpg
Then I went on to some minor upgrades:
Turboback Exhaust, JIC Magic 3" -
http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f56/subyspawn/Subaru/New/PICT0107.jpg
Ekutec Tune, Dyno'd - 280 HP & TQ @ the wheels. nothing too spectacular.
Harness Bar (M1 Fabrication) w/ Crow 4 Points -

Now, its time for some rally-x!
Wheels / Tires: something cheap to start with - Rota's and Blizzaks
Mudflaps: custom made by me :D
First Race: Tombstone, Corona, CA

TAPE!!!! I know, I know, but com'on it was my first race. :shootsself:
First race = first battle damage:
http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f56/subyspawn/Subaru/GC%20Rally%20X%20102205/damage04.jpg
I rallycrossed a full season in 2006 in SM4 for CRS and placed second in the champsionship.
Onto 2007, step up the game to R4. this means rally tires!!!
As you all know, 15" rally wheels dont fit over Brembos. Which leads us to the first major project for RLLYSTI:
Brake Conversion -
Credit: Jackson Rally
Front:
Calipers - 06/07 4 Pots
Pads - Hawk
Rotor - Custom 2 Piece
Lines - SS
Simple bolt-on caliper replacement with the custom 2 piece rotor / hat set up

Rear:
Calipers - Stock Brembos
Pads - Hawk
Rotor - Stock
Lines - SS
Stock Caliper position in the rear does not clear for the 15" wheels. Therefore, we had to custom fab new mounting points for the rear calipers. Stock rotor OD had to be turned down to clear

I will have to take a closer look at the rear hub/upright, but would require different mods than what we did to make the Brembo clear. Sounds like a good idea though. 8)

10-05-2007, 06:54 PM
The Sparco yearly garage sale was awesome. HUGE HUGE discounts on almost all of their products.
I had found out of the garage sale the day before (thanks to Paul, drt suby) and we made a pit-stop on the way to Antioch in Irvine to take advantage of this sale. I was really hoping to score some seats, but we were about 3/4 way back in line and all the ricers beat us to the seats that they dont need!!!! :angryfinger:
Here is what i scored on for RLLYSTI:
http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f56/subyspawn/Subaru/Jackson%20Rally%20Project%202005%20STi/Gear/100507SuitShoesBelts.jpg
Sparco Top Drivers Suit - 62% off retail. w00t!!!
Sparco 6pt Harness' - 53% off retail. heck yes! 8)
Sparco Speedway Driving Shoes - well, i initially paid $75 buck for last years model. however, i was going to give them a try in Antioch only to find out i actually bought 2 left shoes of different sizes!! (i know i cant dance, but i dont literally have two left feet!!). Anyway, i went back to sparco this last week and they upgraded me to the new year model. Mad props to Sparco for taking care of me. :waving:
I also picked up a Sparco hoodie and a couple pair of mechanics gloves. I figured i could spend some extra since i saved so much.
Keep an eye out for next years sale!!!

Well, as most of you know Laughlin Rally X was a few weeks ago and was a blast.
Unfortunately, the course got pretty rough on day two and developed a nice hole in the fast straight section. I decided to punch it thru like always knowing the JIC's could handle it, and they did. However, the next weakest link was my motor mount which basically split in two :pissed:. But i must give it up to Paul (dirt suby) for letting me use his car to finish off day two. Thanks!!

k, so i took my car to the dealer and explained about the 4th gear griding.
they drove it and said they couldn't get the problem to repeat (of course)
i told them you have to drive it hard (duh!) and the guy said "well to be honest with you, your car scares the crap out of us" hahahha. you would think they were driving drtywgn's ride.. they said they would try it again.
they called back and said they got the grinding to happen, but didn't know how to make the call since it doesn't really occur under normal driving conditions :bs:. so, they said they would have to get the main tech to take a look at it and make the call to tear it apart or not. the tech never showed up..
...and thats where im at...:shootsself:

That sucks, it seems like they are gonna deny warranty on it. Got plans if they don't? Could be a chance to get better gears.
subyspawn
01-14-2008, 08:35 PM
Well, over the holidays I drove my car quite a bit (more than normal since it is not my DD) and the 4th gear tranny problem has now become more evident and noticable.
I make another appointment with the 'master' mech at my local Suby dealer and take him for a spin. We get the problem to duplicate no problem.
I end up leaving it there for them to look at it. It was explained to me that if a "tear" down is required that I might be responsible to pick up the $800 fee for labor if the item is not covered under warranty. I guess what they do is take the tranny apart and if it is not 'clearly' a warranty item then pictures will be taken and sent off to some expert to decide if will be covered under warranty.
The suby dealer called me last Friday and said a tear down will be necessary (duh!) and that it will begin first thing Monday.
SO....how confident am I that it is a warranty issue.....i'd say about 90%. Ok, so I rally x the car and drive like crazy in Gorman, whatever! The STi tranny is good for, what?, 500 WHP??? I don't think I have ever hit 3rd gear at a rallyx. The only other hard driving I do is on a canyon run, which cant be that hard on 4th gear!!!
I'm hoping the señor picture examiner is a fan of DI and will support my cause to stage my car with a good tranny!

Dealer called today, and apparently my after market exhaust system 'melted' the speed sensor on the tranny to a point where the dealer had to break it off to get the tranny out.:jack:
Not really a big deal, but the friggin thing costs $240 :pissed:.
The weird thing is that I didn't have a CEL or any indication that the sensor was damaged. I guess the stock exhaust had a 'heat shield' that didn't go back on with the new system.
We shall see what tomorrow brings us......
Oh, and they are going to copy me on the email for the pics of the internals. I will for sure post them up here.

The JIC coilovers I have been running for awhile are really really stupid stiff and I got sick of the kidney pain.
So, before Ridgecrest Rally X I switched back to the stock STi struts.
Some reason the switch was a little more difficult than before; the studs did not want to come out of the strut towers. I was confused for a sec until I actually looked @ the coilovers.

I agree, 1.5:1 is definitely quick enough. Your madman brother doesn't seem to think so though. INSTA-UNDERSTEER!
Wow you are pretty much done with the difficult, affording all that expensive equipment.

First, we picked up the battle wagon and took it to its new home.

Second, we started up at the shop. I was ripping into the RLLYSTi and Kyle was finishing up the Colorado.
Saturday:
Main goal was to get the interior completely gutted and cage ready

First of all, the car is looking sweet! Very nice work going on.
+1 for Tim Bailey of Surgeline Tuning (www.surgelinetuning.com (http://www.surgelinetuning.com)). He's "The Man".. Easily one of the best tuners in the country. He's helped many of our client's (and our) car run far better and get to the podium. Additionally, he's a very easy guy to deal with.
Formerly of PDX Tuning (one of the founders), now doing his own mobile tuning gig, as well as the person that makes the Cobb AP maps, and trains other tuners to pro tune APs. Check out Subiesport mag about every issue.. There's usually some crazy Subie ('08 wagon in the last issue) he's tuned. 505whp STi on an AP has yet to be outdone.
He can also tune Link, Hydra, ECUtek, UTEC, AEM, EMS, and just about any other standalone or piggyback you can think of.
Additionally, he's spent many hours tuning rally cars, so knows the limits of any given turbo with a restrictor. Plan on your car choking hard at 5-5200 rpm. But full boost/wtq at mid 2's-3k makes for a nice FAT powerband and no need for ALS. Also catches the codriver off guard once in awhile at the start line..:)

Wha? I know, I know....im running behind. We have already completed our first event :headbang:and I haven't even posted up the rest of the build....flippin idiot!
Well, lets get started then...
after the logbook...
The roll cage / plating was not 100% complete at time of logbooking. We still had the A pillar bars to weld 100% and some 'under the dash' and other misc plating to finish.
A pillar plating

http://lh3.ggpht.com/subyspawn/SLiTnDo-DbI/AAAAAAAAC48/FGwIxuMke2s/s800/IMG_1067.JPG
Stitch welding was a pain in the arse! Especially upside down welding on the lift. The worst part is all the factory glue stuck between the seams bubbles up and blows out the weld. I would recommend if you have the money to acid dip and put the car on a rotisserie.
Either way, we will definetly pull the motor and trans on our next build. I think we were only a few connections short of it coming out anyway. This would have made the front strut tower part much easier. Oh well, live and learn I guess.

Next up was to finish up the dash mounting. I am pumped on how this came out. It fits with the roll cage 'like a glove' with minimal cutting / hacking away at the stock plastics.
We were able to mount the dash using the stock 'ears' on either side and the center console panel.

The steering setup is awesome. After the trial run of this setup on Kyle's battle wagon, we learned a few things to improve on the design.
We are running a Howe pump, Setrab Cooler, Braided lines, custom reservoir, and 1.5:1 reducer.

Yes, yes, we did the brakes JacksonRally style too. Ripped out all that stock stuff and replaced with new hard line thru out RLLYSTi.
The front 'x' thru the firewall landed smack in the way of the stock reservoir. What to do? Well, Kyle aint skeeered at all! Lets weld some fittings on the stock master cylinder and run some sweet separate CNC fluid reservoirs!
The system turned out very clean (like I knew it would) and worked like a charm at Gorman.

Bleeding this system wasn't easy at all. Since the hand brake is inline with the rest, we had to sequence pumping the brake pedal and pulling the hand brake several times. However, with a little patience we got the brakes working like a charm.

You can't have a rally car without having some sweet underbody protection.
We were unable to go Kevlar though.
We used some HDPE plastic instead, its a lot easier on the wallet. ;-)
JacksonRally has all kinds of tricks up their sleeve, check out these sweet tabs we welded to the underside of the car. They worked out very well.
http://lh4.ggpht.com/subyspawn/SLiRyC27woI/AAAAAAAAC0I/tEXhTUwdoSc/s400/IMG_1097.JPG
We had strategically placed about 18  of these, however, the HDPE is not that flexible and we only used a portion of those to install the protection.

Im sure most everyone has seen these pics in the pics forum but I'm going to repost a few here too!
Well, we arrived with the car not 100%. We had some very frustrating issues with the fire suppression system and had to scramble to get another single fire ext mounted. We had a few other small bits to install / secure before tech. At this point we had been awake for almost two days preping the car for this moment. :unamused:
We made it thru tech with some time, at last, to relax. One helluva *sigh came from Kyle and I after we passed tech that night. :headbang:

seriously, you guys have enough done on the car and enough pics/log material on the car to where you should give sport compact car magazine a call and have them do a story on the car. no doubt they would like to check the car out. i'm not gonna say any other car mags, cause well all the other mainstream mags are ricer mags for the most part. either sportcompact or grassroots would be a good one. it would help with future sponsorships and getting exposure of the circuits you guys drive in.

i left everything except the stuff that ran up the pass A pillar (dome lights, r-view mirror, etc), the driver A pillar (radio ant), and rear 'dash' bits (radio ant, r-def).
So basically I didn't take much out. I didn't have the time or expertise to mess with that massive harness. I just took a lot of time to carefully stuff it back up in the dash as best I could so it would be out of the way. I liked how it turned out.

Currently all the HVAC is gone. The plan is to either put an aftermarket or JacksonRally custom deal to house the heater core and blower motor to be able to run the defroster only.
ABS is gone. no need for it.
and your dccd works fine? I was looking at eliminating mine but going through the manual I see the dccd gets inputs from the abscu&h/u

well, we ran into that problem too. you have to replace the control unit but not the pump. basically you remove it from the pump and plug it back in. then the dccd works fine.
RA teams use badass custom programmed ones for their cars.

ok I kind of figured something like that was what had to be done. Did you run into any weird problems or was it pretty straight forward? I'll probably start on the brakes pretty soon to get my m/c out of the way for the cage

Install the roof vent around the roll cage! Not cage around roof vent  We obviously did cage first, don't remember the brand roof vent but it barely fit between the forward most part of the roof X and the top windscreen visor bar.

If you want the Gp N roof vent, I recommend installing that first, then the cage. If you dont care then install a generic vent after you install the cage. Don't ask me how I know...
Oh, I have a GpN vent for sale, brand new, all the parts except the inner trim obviously, $350 plus shipping.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
October 10th 2008 DirtyImpreza.com Rally Team (DIRT) Returns From Prescott Rally
Despite challenging weather conditions, both cars return undamaged with solid finishes K.Jackson / J.Burke (7th Overall) E.Gilbert / M.DeLodder (16th Overall).
Aliso Viejo, CA – The DirtyImpreza.com Rally Team (DIRT) has returned from the 21st running of the Prescott Rally held in the mountains outside Prescott, Arizona last weekend. The very fast stages allowed both drivers to open up the power in their modified Subaru Imprezas and test their driving skills at speeds well over 100mph. The weather decided to keep things interesting as periods of drizzle and rain made driving conditions slippery and service intervals difficult for crew members. Narrow roads with two-thousand foot exposures also kept the teams' attention on 4 of the rally's 8 stages.
Keith Jackson and Jon Burke (DIRT / Jackson Rally STi) Car #10 - The roads were described as graded smooth, fast and flowing, but what made them tricky was the loose layer of gravel on top of the hard pack dirt that was like driving on marbles. Dust was also a factor in deciding how hard to push on some of the more congested stages. A slight off on SS6 put the car into a rocky embankment that lodged some stones in the bead of driver’s side rear tire. Despite the slow leak this caused, they continued at full speed to the end of the stage.
During their next transit, they changed the tire just as the rain began to fall. Keith, with the help of codriver Jon Burke, was able to keep up with many of the other more experienced Open class AWD drivers in the rally and finished 6th in the class of 9 and 7th out of 25 total finishers.
Eli Gilbert and Mindy DeLodder (DIRT / Tommy Gun Rally WRX) Car #22 - Back from some major repairs since Gorman Ridge Rally, the beginning of the Prescott event was both competition and shakedown for the WRX’s new transmission. Early stages were taken at a quick pace, but still with significant reservation as the team did not want a breakdown on stage and were still familiarizing themselves with the high speed character of Prescott's roads.
Putting full faith into co-driver Mindy’s pace notes after the 4 night stages of Day 1, Eli pushed hard late in the rally despite the rainy conditions on Saturday’s stages 7 and 8. After catching a car on stage 7 which caused the team to lose about a minute, they were able to break into the top 10 overall stage times on the slippery last stage, ending the rally on a very positive and confidence-building note. This last push earned them the 16th overall spot for the rally.
