K. Jackson and M. Estep Clench First Place Finish At Idaho Rally
D.I.R.T. / Jackson Rally Team Travels a Thousand Miles to Take Victory

Aliso Viejo, CA – Rally cars thundered down roads near Mountain Home, Idaho over the three day span from July 9th to 11th, 2009. DirtyImpreza.com Rally Team (DIRT) driver Keith Jackson and co-driver Marra Estep piloted their Jackson Rally Open Class Subaru Impreza WRX STi through the hot and dusty roads south of the state capital. Several teams suffered offs during the event, but car number 6 was constantly attacking the more seasoned veterans over the course of both days. Their persistence and focus paid off by landing them a spot at the top of the podium in first place for Open AWD and they took an impressive second place finish overall. The event wasn't without its close calls though, Driver Keith Jackson recaps:

"On stage 1, I was the fourth car on the road, Andrew Sutherland & Team (in the White GC) went off on a tight left-hander after a good downhill straight and I almost landed on top of them. We came wide around the corner with the rear end coming around and almost clipping the edge of the drop. I just kept my foot in it and the 50/50 locked [center differential] I was running all rally pulled me through. As we came around the corner we saw the "OK" sign held up and arms-a-waiving us to continue down the stage."

Crew Chief Kyle Jackson had nothing but good things to say about the entire event, and the performance of the car and driver / codriver. "The roads were unbelievable. Idaho has some amazing scenery and is a very relaxing environment. Everything was pretty much on schedule and very well organized. We were lucky enough to have the car prepped very well and it needed almost no service, just looking over."

The car, affectionately nicknamed "RLLYSTI" was running very well, but still has some small issues to sort out before the team's next event. Excessive heat from the turbo and down pipe was threatening to damage the passenger side CV boot, but this issue was caught before it became a bigger problem. The heat was so intense at times that co-driver Marra Estep's shoes were starting to melt to the floorboards near the firewall! This wasn't enough to keep her from losing concentration on the notes, as they stayed smooth and fast through all of the 9 stages. Marra summed it up best by commenting "I LOVE racin’ it friggin ROCKS! I definitely felt more comfortable this race."
A rally win under their belt, the team packed up for the 1000 mile trek back to southern California. Preparations are already underway for the next event which will be North Nevada Rally (August 8th, 2009). The DirtyImpreza.com Rally Team (DIRT) and Jackson Rally would like to thank all the efforts of the Idaho Rally organizers and volunteers that made this event possible.

Awesome stuff.

Who's that dude in the pics that looks like Loren with neat hair? :lol2:

Excessive heat from the turbo and down pipe was threatening to damage the passenger side CV boot, but this issue was caught before it became a bigger problem.

Must be a Subaru thing, the exact same same thing happened on the Legacy, the downpipe fatigued the inner CV and it went pop. I don't think we melted any passengers' feet to the floor though

Awesome stuff.

Who's that dude in the pics that looks like Loren with neat hair? :lol2:

The hippie hair had to go, I got tired of picking up 2 lbs of dirt/grease every time I crawled under a car. :lol2:

Must be a Subaru thing, the exact same same thing happened on the Legacy, the downpipe fatigued the inner CV and it went pop. I don't think we melted any passengers' feet to the floor though

Kyle's fix for the expanding boot (due to heat) was flippin sweet. Wedge the end of a ziptie under the outer clamp so that air can get past, but the grease stays put.

The best part of melting shoes on the passenger floor is what's underneath the piece of metal that was getting so hot: the ECU!

I'm really looking forward to NNR. See everyone there.

Thanks guys! I had a blast in Idaho, I can't wait till next year. I really need to give an extra thanks to Mindy from Tommy Gun Rally and Scotty G though! Without Mindy's suit and Hans and Scotts helmet I wouldn't have been racing at all :shootsself:. Anyways good times! Can't wait till NNR. The days are not going by fast enough!

congrats, good to see you two did so well and that the car had very little problems. goes to show how well the car has been built and how well the driver/co driver worked together.

hopefully you can figure out a way to shield the cv boots from the heat of the turbo/downpipe before NNR comes along.

Nothing a grip of heat wrap can't fix.

there was some excess heat shielding in the scrap metal bin the other day that would work perfect along with the heat wrap. if the jackson team would like some free heatshielding they can cut up, i can grab it for them.

lol, but it is true. hopefully i will have the time off to go see the car in action up at gorman. not sure if you already have a team for the service crew, but if you need a hand, i'd be happy to help out.
